Researchers Find That Hip-Hop Music Leads To Better Surgical Procedures

I'm so happy to see you healthy!

Source: FatCamera / Getty

Hip-Hop music is known to move souls as well as body parts whenever played at high volumes, but did y’all know it can also affect how surgeons perform surgical procedures? Not in a negative way either.

According to Daily Mail, researchers found that when Hip-Hop music is played at operating theaters while medical students were performing their operating procedures, it led to more efficient outcomes than one would expect. As part of the experiment, researchers from Germany looked at the effect that music would have on THE surgeons’ performances and used four genres of music as part of their tests: Classical, Rock, Hip-Hop, and Radio music.

For their study, the German team monitored 82 medical students as they performed laparoscopic exercises in a theatre while the four categories of music played. What they found was that both Classical and Hip-Hop led to more efficient outcomes while Rock and Radio music proved to be less effective. Can’t say we’re surprised to be honest.

Fabian Riedel, who led the study, said: ‘Our findings suggest that certain genres of music may have benefits for students during surgical training, which could make the process more efficient.’

Yes, we know, Hip-Hop music is the greatest genre of music in the history of mankind.

Unfortunately, they didn’t specify which songs were played or which artists were used. There’s a huge difference between performing surgery with Drake crooning in your ears and DMX talkin’ about “Surgery with the chainsaw!” Rest In Power, X.

Still, it’s good to know that Hip-Hop continues to prove to be as productive for society as it’s been entertaining. Who knows what else researchers will find about the effects music has on humanity as we move forward in the future, but we expect more positivity than not.

Travis Scott Drops Three Different Artworks For His New Single “Highest in the Room”

As if he didn’t already have the music world excited with the announcement of his second annual ASTROWORLD Festival a few days ago, Travis Scott is now gearing up for the release of new music in the form of a single titled “Highest in the Room.”

Dropping this Friday (October 4), Travis’ latest musical offering also comes accompanied by three different artwork designs (seen above). The main one seems to be the burning ladder extending into the clouds — it’s a dope work of art in itself that alludes to the song’s title perfectly without having to say much. The alternate cover goes for a more direct approach, infusing the words “HIGHEST IN THE ROOM” in a typeface that matches the Basquiat-esque figure also present in the artwork. The third could be a whole other song altogether, especially because a song titled “SHE FILLS MY MIND UP WITH IDEAS” with an alien head on the cover looks like a very Cactus Jack sorta move. Either way, we’re definitely excited to see what the rap superstar has to offer to cap off the workweek with.

Look out for “Highest in the Room” by Travis Scott to arrive this Friday (October 4). No word yet on if this is for a new album, but we’ll keep you updated with the latest.

‘I Punked That N***a’: Snoop Dogg Talks 2Pac vs. Nas ’96 VMAs Beef On Angie Martinez’s ‘Untold Stories Of Hip Hop’

If there’s one person who some of Hip-Hop’s most legendary MCs would trust with their secrets stories to the game, it’d 100% be Angie Martinez. That’s why it comes as no surprise that the first episode of her new WE tv series Untold Stories Of Hip Hop would give us more than a few crazy quotables, particularly from Snoop Dogg’s segment where he broke down 2Pac’s close encounter with Nas at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards.

Taking us back to a tough era where East Coast/West Coast beef was at its peak, Snoop gives a powerful breakdown of the whole ordeal from an interesting point of view. He speaks on what it felt like being in the uneasy place of showing support for his West Coast fam while still keeping cool with the East Coast homies that were friends before things turned for the worse.

It starts with Angie reminiscing on her classic interview with 2Pac from 1996, where she only was able to air 12 minutes of a two-hour interview. She tries to find Pac backstage during the VMAs to apologize and from there the run-in commences. Snoop fills in with the first-person view, giving a word-by-word description of how the conversation went. It’s definitely worth the full watch, but in short Snoop remembers 2Pac discussing a diss record aimed at Jay-Z, Biggie, Nas and other New York rappers, and Nas just brushing it off as friendly competition and daps him up before parting ways. Due to his non-violent response, Pac sees it as him “punking” Esco. Snoop on the other hand sees it as him giving them a pass since his entourage outnumbered theirs both in people and, well, other things. It’s a tough topic for Angie, too — her interview at the time was the moment that soured Snoop’s relationship with Pac and Suge due to his on-air verbal support for the East Coast.

Here’s one quote that sums things up the best from the interview, via WE tv:

“We all used to hang out. I love Biggie and I love Pac — and both of them love me. So, how I look saying [expletive] Biggie because I’m with Pac? We was on the same s**t! They rapping the same s**t we rapping; we got the same struggle and same hustle. Why the f**k we can’t get along? Why we can’t like these n****s?”

He goes on to show his praise for New York rappers of the time, referring to them as “the Mecca of Hip-Hop.” He explains further that, because his love for them was deeper than whatever was going on at the time, he shouldn’t have been made to choose between sides. Honestly, we agree.

2 Chainz Is Now a Co-Owner of Atlanta’s A3C Festival

2 Chainz may be adding a few more chains to his collection following his latest lucrative investment. The Georgia-bred emcee is putting on for his home state by announcing that he just bought stake in ATL’s highly-popular music and tech festival A3C.

While music and technology are the two pillars of A3C, the three-day event serves up much more than that. For 15 years, the festival has been a breeding ground for cutting edge culture coming out of the South from all aspects: parties from day to night, a handful of speaker series, showcases, panels, comedy shows and even a $25,000 USD “pitch competition” for startups are just a portion of the massive amount of scheduled events. For 2 Chainz part, he’ll serve as a core curator as it relates to selecting speakers, performers and, according to his exclusive interview with Entrepreneur, will also stand in for the closing keynote for his inaugural year on board.

Here’s what he had to say about joining the A3C team, via Entrepreneur:

“I think investing is a good thing, period — especially anything involving a festival, music, something along those lines. I feel like A3C has the trajectory to be the next South by Southwest, as far as growing musical talent. We’re trying to implement more in the tech space, more in TV and film. So that’s where I see a value, and where I see an opening for me to get involved, to push the culture forward.”

2 Chainz

We can’t wait to see what he does with the festival, which boasts an annual attendance of 30,000, especially with his many connections in the game. Sounds like a promising union!

“Not Accurate”: American Airlines Debunks Tyler, The Creator’s ‘No Fly List’ Claim

Whether he’s bringing LGBTQ narratives to Hip-Hop through his music videos or changing the game altogether with his Camp Flog Gnaw festival, Tyler, The Creator definitely knows how to get his names in headlines. However, his latest attention-grabbing act may have went a little overboard and been a complete fabrication to begin with.

Earlier today, Tyler went on Twitter (seen above) and announced that he was on American Airlines’ “no fly terrorist list,” even following up to ask the question “WHAT THE HELL DID I DO” in all caps. However, as we all know the eclectic rapper can be the ultimate troll at times, his tweet may have been one big joke simply to get his followers riled up. American Airlines first replied soon after he posted with the following:

Afterwards, the long-running airline company headed over to The FADER to make a full statement on the whole ordeal. Take a look below to read what they had to say officially:

“American does not have a terrorism watch list. That list is controlled by the FBI,” a spokesperson said. “But since Tyler, The Creator, is flying with us today and is currently on one of our flights, the tweet is not accurate.”

— American Airlines, via The FADER

While we understand that Tyler is the absolute jokester — we love the guy for that! — terrorist jokes in reference to airlines probably should be left on the cutting room floor, especially when the 18th anniversary of 9/11 occurred just a few weeks ago.

Funny or fail? Let us know your thoughts on this Tyler, The Creator/American Airlines ordeal over on our Facebook and Twitter!

WATCH: Casanova & Giggs Link Up in London For “Live” Music Video

Following an unfortunate connection to that now-infamous Tekashi 6ix9ine case, Casanova is moving on and upwards with his career by prepping us for his upcoming album Behind These Scars with a new single that features UK rapper Giggs.

Directed by burgeoning creative Mollana Burke, the music video for “Live” gives a black & white look into the struggles that both MCs have faced during their respective come-ups in the game. Set in the Peckham district of South London, the scenes deal with issues that many inner city residents around the world face on a daily: poverty, spousal drama, childcare woes, maintaining a stable household and ultimately finding religion — the latter issue we see Cas and Giggs uniting to discover in the end.

Watch the music video for Casanova and Giggs’ collaborative cut “Live” above, and look out for the Brooklyn-bred rapper’s new album, Behind These Scars, to drop on October 11.

WATCH: Nas Gets Political With “War Against Love” Music Video

Nas received tons of praise for his “greatest-hits-never-heard” compilation album The Lost Tapes 2 when it released back in July, and now the legendary MC is keeping that momentum going with a new music video for the album cut “War Against Love.”

With Jason Goldwatch behind the wheel as director and editor, Nas spits a story that’s realistic, in some instances poignant, and ultimately serves to let us know what really matters when it comes to the world we live in today. Images of poverty, nuclear explosions, the harsh side of the Civil Rights movement and even Agent Orange himself are superimposed with images of blooming flowers, Martin Luther King Jr., birds in flight and beautiful imagery overall — he literally highlights both the good and bad of society as the three-and-a-half minute clip plays out. Underneath it all, Nas can be seen spitting the lyrics to the song with a stoic expression, showing neither grief nor optimism for the images playing before his eyes. In short, it’s a truly impressive body of work that will sit with you well beyond the abrupt ending.

Watch the music video for “War Against Love” by Nas above, and listen to The Lost Tapes 2 courtesy of Mass Appeal Records and Def Jam on all streaming platforms now.

‘It’s Like F**king ABC’s’: DMX Felt “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” Was ‘Simple’ & ‘Repetitive’ on First Listen

Many may consider “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem,” the fourth single off DMX’s classic 1998 debut album It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, to be one of the greatest Hip-Hop songs of the ’90s and arguably of all-time even. However, one person thought it was pretty wack when the first heard it: Dark Man X himself!

Sitting down for an exclusive interview with GQ to break down some of his most iconic records, X recalls taking roughly 15 minutes to write the song. However, it wasn’t exactly a pleasurable experience to begin with. The multiplatinum-selling triple threat had this to say about his initial reaction to “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem”:

“I actually didn’t want to write it; I didn’t want to do that song. The beat was simple and repetitive, and the flow I came up with is just like — [there’s] so many other songs with so much substance, that I was like, ‘This song is, like, fucking ABC’s – like elementary!’”

DMX, GQ

Of course, he went on to appreciate making the record, continuing by stating, “I glad I did do it. I listened…and it worked out.” He also confirms that, during that same recording session, he also wrote “Fuckin’ wit’ D” and “Let Me Fly,” tracks 3 and 7, respectively, off the Billboard 200 chart-topping LP at the topic of this epic story. For the many of us that screamed “STOP! DROP! SHUT ‘EM DOWN, OPEN UP SHOP!” to the top of our lungs, we appreciate you for pulling this one off, X!

Watch the full interview over on GQ, where DMX also breaks down the stories behind “X Gon’ Give It To Ya” off the 2003 Cradle 2 the Grave soundtrack, “What’s My Name?” and “Party Up (Up in Here)” off …And Then There Was X from 2000, plus the special story behind his 2003 Grand Champ lead single “Where the Hood At.”
