DJ Premier Featuring Lil Wayne, Rick Ross And Big Sean “Ya Don’t Stop”

unnamed 77

Dating back to the end of 2023, DJ Premier has been on a prolific run, releasing singles with Common, Russ, Snoop Dogg, Chance The Rapper and Nas.  When Premier and Nas released “Define My Name,” in April, they also revealed that their long-awaited and landmark collaborative album would be released later this year.

Now, DJ Premier has brought more legends and icons together, or as Rick Ross asserts “It’s the biggest in the game”, as Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, and Big Sean join him on “Ya Don’t Stop.” Premier’s cyclone of strings sets the stage for Ross, Sean and Wayne’s distinctive styles and vivid storytelling from three of the genre’s most influential artists.

“I’ve been on a run, and releasing singles more consistently.  I had an idea and wanted to initially get Wayne and Ross on the same track” DJ Premier recalled.  “I reached out to Rozay first and he sent me back vocals the same day.  I sent two tracks to Wayne to choose from and he sent both back the same night and told me to keep them both.  Big Sean called me to do a scratch hook for him.  In return, he hopped on as well.  Cipher complete!”

[WATCH] Did Wayne Not Perform With The Hot Boys At Essence Festival Because Of Turk?

Screenshot 2024 07 11 at 3.43.40 PM

It’s no secret that there has been a lot of heat within the Hot Boys’ camp, specifically between formerly incarcerated member B.G., who was released from federal prison late last year, and the group’s standout star, Lil Wayne.

The Hot Boys were slated to perform at this year’s Essence Festival, which also marks the 25th anniversary of “Back Dat Azz Up,” one of the group’s top three songs of all time. What was most noticeable to fans was Wayne’s absence from Essence, which was rumored to be due to former Hot Boy Turk not attending the event. What was supposed to be a Hot Boys reunion couldn’t happen without all four of the original members present.

When interviewer B-High asked Turk how he felt about not performing at Essence Festival, Turk responded, “When I saw the set…when I saw everything coming and I saw them boys coming out, it was like a bittersweet moment because I’m supposed to be there. I can’t get excited about a place I’m not invited, but it was bittersweet.”

Today In Hip Hop History: Juvenile’s Classic Hit “Back Dat Azz Up” Turns 25 Years Old!

Screenshot 2024 06 11 at 10.09.47 PM

On this date in 1989, Juvenile, along with his Cash Money brothers Mannie Fresh and a 17-year-old Lil Wayne, dropped the timeless classic “Back Dat Azz Up”(also known as “Back Dat Thang Up” in the edited version). It was the second single from Juvenile’s debut LP 400 Degrees, with the premiere single being the electric “Ha”. Produced by Mannied Fresh and released on the Cash Money imprint, Back Dat Azz Up is one of the most recognized smash hits from not only the Cash Money camp but from Hip Hop’s renowned “Bling Era”.

Commercially the song was a chart topper, peaking at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and in 2021, it was listed at number 478 on Rolling Stone‘s “Top 500 Best Songs of All Time”.

This year, on the the 25th anniversary of the song’s release, the City of New Orleans officially named June 11th “Back Dat Azz Up” Day. Mayor LaToya Cantrell signed a proclamation making “Back Dat Azz Up” Day an official holiday.

Juvenile spoke about the recognition of one of his greatest hits, saying, “I really wasn’t keeping up with the dates until one of my guys educated me. It’s crazy. It’s great to have all of these accolades, but it’s better to enjoy it with your family and the guys who made it hapen. I really wasn’t expecting it.”
