DMX Checks Himself Into Rehab

For much of 2019, DMX has been in a comeback stride. At the beginning of this year (January 25), DMX was released from a West Virginia prison after spending much of 2018 behind bars for a tax evasion conviction. Since then, the onetime superstar has been on a climb that feels distinct in a career filled with peaks and valleys. The 48-year-old Yonkers, New York representative toured to honor the 20th-anniversary of his debut album. In May, he was among the headliners at Minnesota’s Soundset Festival. It was recently confirmed that the artist reunited with Def Jam Records, the label and distributor that partnered with Earl Simmons for five consecutive #1 albums in the 1990s and early 2000s. Then, last month, X dropped his most significant song in years, appearing alongside Swizz Beatz and Rick Ross for the video single “Just In Case.” The track that released in August belongs to The Godfather Of Harlem soundtrack, which Swizzy is overseeing. DMX Toasts To His Comeback Campaign In A Video With Rick Ross & Swizz Beatz However, late Saturday night (October 12), X’s team shared with the public that the rapper has checked himself into a rehab facility. “In his ongoing commitment to putting family and sobriety first, DMX has checked himself into a rehab facility. He apologizes for his cancelled shows and thanks his fans for their continued support,” an Instagram post told fans.

Earlier this month, X reportedly missed a scheduled appearance at a Def Jam Records 35th-anniversary-themed party. On Saturday, DMX was also billed to appear during a DJ Paul and Juicy J Three 6 Mafia reunion concert in Mississippi. Throughout his career, Simmons has battled addiction, including crack cocaine. As recently as 2017, Simmons has entered rehab facilities. DMX Breaks Down While Discussing How God Saved His Life (Video) In an interview with GQ published less than a month ago, X confirmed that he still drinks alcohol. It is unclear if this rehabilitation is related to any particular substance.

Meek Mill’s Conviction Is Overturned & He Is Off Of Probation

Today (July 24) in a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania courthouse, Meek Mill’s 2008 conviction was overturned. After a hearing in the appeals court, the 32-year-old rapper will receive a new trial, as he tells his fans and supporters that he is no longer on probation. Following a 2007 arrest for drug and weapons charges, it marks the first time in more than a decade that the Maybach Music Group/Atlantic Records artist can claim that status. For the first time in more than 10 years, Meek’s future rests in the hands of a new judge. “The unanimous three-judge panel said that new evidence that undermines the credibility of the officer who testified against the rapper at his trial made it likely he would be acquitted if the case were retried,” reports The Associated Press. The hearing was confirmed early last month.

As of right now I’m not on probation and I am not a felon anymore today was mega!!!

A post shared by Meek Mill (@meekmill) on

Meek Mill’s Story Is Being Told In A Docuseries Produced By JAY-Z (Video) Philadelphia prosecutors stated in the hearing that they discredit the account of one witness from Meek’s 2007 arrest. Former Philadelphia Police Officer Reginald Graham, who wrote the ’07 search warrant and testified against Meek at trial, was dismissed from the force several years ago for theft and a subsequent coverup. “A police colleague who took part in the arrest later said Graham lied about Williams brandishing a gun,” writes the AP. Graham has also been the subject of a past FBI investigation. The appeals court also overturned the past rulings of Judge Genece Brinkley, who has been accused by Meek and his defense for showing unfavorable bias. In the court, Brinkley’s credibility to a now-discredited witnessed nullified her ruling. On social media, Meek considered today’s decision a victory, announcing that he was no longer a felon. Throughout the last few years, the North Philly rapper’s legal woes had prevented him from touring, appearances, and collaborations—costing the chart-topper millions in revenue. Upon leaving prison early last year, Meek also told NBC’s Lester Holt how the limitations of his probation hurt him as a father and member of his family. Rappers Might Start Going To Jail Because Of Their Lyrics Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, who has advocated on behalf of Meek in recent years, must decide if his office will drop the case altogether.

Yesterday (July 23), Meek and longtime collaborator/advocate JAY-Z announced a Roc Nation and Dreamchasers Records label partnership. To date, the label has included artists such as Omelly, Chino, and late New Orleans, Louisiana rapper Lil Snupe. Talib Kweli & B-Real Discuss People Of Color Being Blocked Out Of Legal Cannabis

B-Real is the latest guest on People’s Party With Talib Kweli. There, the member of Cypress Hill and Prophets Of Rage tells the co-founder of Black Star and Reflection Eternal about the origins of his groups. The Los Angeles, California native breaks down Cypress’ distinction among the the handful of artists on SNL‘s all-time “banned” list. The legendary MC/producer/entrepreneur also opens up about his neighborhood ties, and how gang graffiti coined him a name that he’s kept hot for nearly 30 years. In addition to music, B-Real and Talib discuss cannabis. Apart from “Dr. Green Thumb” recalling his days rolling with Brand Nubian to Harlem to cop a legendary strain en route to New Rochelle, B-Real offers some blunt reality surrounding the booming bud business. Bun B Tells Talib Kweli Why T.R.O.Y. Is The Biggest Hip-Hop Song Of All Time (Video) At 43:00, Talib describes the efficiency of recently buying cannabis at a dispensary in Colorado. “It was so easy, and I got really good weed. I was amazed at how people are caking up on it. But the Black and Brown people are locked out of that. It’s hard for us to even get into those spaces when we took the risk—our communities took the risk.” B-Real, who is involved with Gas Co. (and wears the hat for his appearance) responds, “They have this thing called social equity, which means if you’re an offender, where you’ve been convicted of a sort of cannabis-related crime, it’s supposed to put you in the front of the line [to get sanctions]. And for most, it does. And that’s a lot of Black and Brown people that can apply and actually get some of these licenses. But the problem is, a lot of us can’t afford those. And when we try to come into the scenario, we usually come in by ourselves, independent, with not much financial backing. They make it very hard for us to exist in that market because of what it costs to actually invest in actually becoming a cannabis brand or company. Supposedly, the system is that at some point, if you can’t afford that permit, they have a backup fund that pays for it for you because they want these permits working. But the problem is, even if they give you that, you still have to have the capital to actually start the business. My advice to any Black and Brown person trying to get in the game: there’s a lot of people operating sort of the same way that the corporate structure does. The corporate [structure] is a collective of a lot of people with money, obviously. They move all their money pretty much together. So what a lot of people are doing now is they’re partnering up with people that want to invest in the cannabis game, but they’re all investing together and going in as one. That’s what our folks need to do: they need to f*ckin’ get together.” Kweli summarizes, “Collective and cooperative economics.” B-Real Details How He Developed 1 Of Hip-Hop’s Most Distinctive Voices (Video) Co-host Jasmin Leigh interjects that she noticed a Black-owned dispensary in her neighborhood becoming white-owned overnight. B-Real explains, “They’re not making it easier for us. But that’s why I say we have to sort of unify our money and sort of move together in that business to have a presence there. They’re not gonna make it easy for us. They’ve made it easy for the corporate structure to get in. It’s just that some people have figured out how the corporations move.” B-Real notes that his proposed strategy has worked, and private investors have found success without outside backing. “It’s just a matter of people approaching the right people within our community and saying, ‘Hey, let’s move in this together.’ Like you see, a lot of athletes now are getting into the cannabis sector.” Kweli draws on what B-Real says regarding Black and Brown unity and stresses the importance of that bond regarding issues approaching the 2020 election. The two veteran artists move into politics for the close of the extensive and dynamic discussion. Fab 5 Freddy’s Documentary Sets The Record Straight About A Chronic Problem (Video Trailer) Elsewhere in the interview, B-Real describes bringing in percussionist Eric Bobo as an official member of Cypress Hill. He also describes an especially significant episode of his Smoke Box involving Pop/Rock singer Melissa Etheridge. #BonusBeat: Talib Kweli and B-Real were both featured on Chris Webby’s 2015 song “Dopamine,” which also has Trae Tha Truth and Grafh:

Meek Mill Is Granted A Hearing In Front Of A New Judge & Court

For more than a decade, Meek Mill’s freedom has rested in the hands of a single judge, Genece Brinkley. After multiple lengthy stays behind bars (including one ending in 2018), Meek, Roc Nation, his legal team, and legions of fans have campaigned that the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native continues his ongoing legal matters before a new court. Following recent efforts from supporters including the office of Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, Meek will face a new, different judge at an upcoming hearing in appellate court. On July 16, the 32-year-old rapper and Dreamchasers Records founder born Robert Rihmeek Williams will be back in a Philadelphia court. Although released from prison in April of 2018, Meek remains in hearings tied to a 2007 weapons and drug arrest followed by a 2008 conviction. Before the new court, Meek and his team hope those original ’08 charges will be overturned, allowing the Maybach Music Group/Atlantic Records artist to capitalize on his talent. JAY-Z & Meek Mill Have Joined Forces To Free Those Unjustly Held In Prison An early 2018 Rolling Stone feature story by Paul Solotaroff chronicled controversy surrounding officers responsible for Meek’s arrest, including police brutality of the burgeoning rapper while in Philadelphia Police Department custody. Other elements of the investigation cited questionable behavior on Judge Brinkley’s part, including suggesting creative choices from the musician, and insistence that his career remain under the handling of former manager and local figure, Charlie Mack. “We’re looking forward to the oral argument before the Superior Court of Pennsylvania and to, hopefully, having Meek’s conviction vacated,” Meek lawyer Jordan Siev told CNN in a statement today (June 4). “In light of the District Attorney’s recent filing, where he supports the granting of a new trial to Meek and the recusal of Judge Brinkley, we hope to have this injustice rectified once and for all.” Meek Mill Wants To Get 1 Million People Out Of The Prison System During recent years both on the streets and behind bars, Meek Mill has lent his celebrity and voice to assist others that have been wrongfully convicted and over-punished for their actions. In late 2018, the artist released Champions. The album featured JAY-Z, Fabolous, Rick Ross, Drake, and others.

The Charges Against Jussie Smollett Are Dropped

In a breaking story, prosecutors have dropped its felony charges against Empire actor Jussie Smollett. The move happened this morning (March 26), following an arrest late last month under the suspicion of making false reports regarding an incident in Chicago, Illinois on January 29. The actor was released on $10,000 bond.

“After reviewing all of the facts and circumstances of the case, including Mr. Smollett’s volunteer service in the community and agreement to forfeit his bond to the city of Chicago, we believe this outcome is a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case,” the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office said in a statement. According to The New York Times, the official report did not shed light on possible new evidence or information.

Former Cop Jason Van Dyke Sentenced To Prison For The Killing Of Laquan McDonald

A member of the 36-year-old actor’s legal team, Anne Kavanagh, told the press, “Today, all criminal charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped and his record has been wiped clean of the filing of this tragic complaint against him. Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify on January 29. He was a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public causing an inappropriate rush to judgment. Jussie is relieved to have this situation behind him and is very much looking forward to getting back to focusing on his family, friends, and career.”

Smollett has not yet spoken to media in this developing story.

21 Savage Is Released By ICE On Bond

Nine days after he was arrested by U.S. Immigration And Customs Enforcement (ICE), rapper 21 Savage was released on bond today (February 12). Per reports, he has been granted an expedited hearing. The artist born She’yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph was taken into custody on February 3 in Atlanta, Georgia. At that time, ICE labeled 26-year-old a “United Kingdom national,” and stated that he was “unlawfully in the United States.” Reports at that time indicated that the Slaughter Gang rapper faced deportation. Additional information suggested that Abraham-Joseph entered the U.S. lawfully in 2005. However, according to representatives, he was awaiting approval of a new visa at the time of his arrest this month. 21 Savage Didn’t Face Deportation Until He Became A Positive Influence The Daily Beast published a statement from 21’s team this morning. “In the last 24 hours, in the wake of the Grammy Awards at which he was scheduled to attend and perform, we received notice that She’yaa was granted an expedited hearing. Today, 21 Savage was granted a release on bond. He won his freedom.” On behalf of 21, lawyers thanked family, friends, and supporters. New Details Suggest 21 Savage Is A Victim, Not An Impostor In the last week, it was reported that JAY-Z and Roc Nation are assisting 21 Savage in his fight for freedom. Additionally, “rockstar” collaborator Post Malone wore a shirt with his name on it. Post performed with the Red Hot Chili Peppers on Sunday night (February 10).

Aaron McGruder Discusses The Boondocks Being Ahead Of Its Time

Since broadcasting earlier this month, Surviving R. Kelly has many people re-examining their position on the onetime R&B superstar. This month’s six-part documentary on Lifetime details the accusations against the 52-year-old by alleged victims. These include claims of sex with underage girls and graphic accounts of abuse and predatory tactics used against women. The documentary also looks at Kelly’s trials, where he was not found guilty of the crimes including child pornography. The series also compiled interviews with many music journalists and colleagues, who opine on why Kelly has not only avoided conviction in court, but remained a force in music and popular culture.

In Surviving R. Kelly, Chance The Rapper declares regret for collaborating with Kelly in the wake of these charges. Lady Gaga apologized for her sexually-themed collaboration, Nick Cannon, Kelly’s former Jive Records label-mate, also expressed regret for working with Robert, while recalling working on a video set with Kelly as some of his charges surfaced.

dream hampton Speaks About The Horrors Of Making Surviving R. Kelly

One of the more notable discussions on the topic of Kelly surfaced online earlier this week, as television and film critic Aisha Harris penned a The New York Times piece (“R. Kelly: Why So Many Ignored The Warning Signs”) detailing how two shows tackled R. Kelly’s 2002 child pornography allegations with humor. These satires aired in 2003 and 2005, respectively: Chappelle’s Show spoof music video, “(I Wanna) Pee on You,” and The Boondocks‘ mock-trial episode, “The Trial of R. Kelly.”

This episode featured “Riley” defending R. Kelly, with lines referencing the leaked pornographic film. “I’ve seen that girl! She ain’t little. I’m little.” Harris quotes the material in her NYT essay.

Creator and writer of The Boondocks, Aaron McGruder, recently caught wind of his “The Trial of R. Kelly” episode going viral. This was thanks to multiple tweets from fans who ripped the episode’s final scene, in which the 10-year-old “Huey” yells at the trial’s jury for ignoring Kelly’s allegations for the sake of upholding him as a talented artist and singer.

“What the hell is wrong with you people?” “Huey” angrily asks the jury, as they dance along to a song played by Kelly’s lawyer to prove his innocence. “… Every famous ni**a that gets arrested is not Nelson Mandela. … We all know the ni**a can sing.” The events end in violence, with both sides of the argument clashing outside the courthouse, and the defendant being found not guilty. The verdict mirrored what would happen in the years that followed.

McGruder spoke with his friend, The Undefeated  Senior Writer Lonnae O’Neal, about the episode’s second-life of cultural relevance, and being back in the conversation.

“This was regular when I was doing the [comic] strip,” McGruder said on being in headlines again. There’d be “a big, giant news piece happening based on some of the work I had done, or some major controversy that other people were talking about. I had gotten really good at just shutting it all out because you couldn’t possibly get any work done and track all of this trouble you were getting into and who was saying what.”

“That said, it’s been a really, really long time,” he says on “The Trial of R. Kelly” episode. He realizes the viral video is “just a little jarring. I think a smaller version of this happened when Oprah was flirting with a presidential run and suddenly everyone was talking about the “Return Of The King” episode where in the end it says Oprah [is] President in 2020.”

Dame Dash Discusses The Rift R. Kelly Caused Between Him & JAY-Z Because Of Aaliyah

As for the episode’s recent viral reaction, McGruder says: “R. Kelly was a very slow-moving cultural thing that took place over years and years and years. And there was a lot of time for everyone to really think about it and mull it over and decide how they felt.” He continues, “We live in the era now where we don’t do that anymore. We don’t wait for the judge and jury. We make our decisions quick. It’s a very, very different time. And I think a lot of people are trying to reconcile their older selves and their R. Kelly fandom.”

McGruder says that he has seen the Lifetime series at the time of the interview, and declined to link it to The Boondocks episode. Interestingly enough, “The Trial of R. Kelly” aired in 2005, three years before R. Kelly’s actual child pornography trial in Chicago (whose jury found Kelly not guilty of 14 out of 14 counts of child pornography) had happened. Even more surprising, it was The Boondocks’ second television episode. “I was just trying to make a show that was funny, trying to make a show that stayed on the air,” MacGruder says, adding that the episode took two years between its conception and airing on TV.

It was reported last year that The Boondocks might soon be coming back in the form of a video game. Not much word has been out about the experience, but it will be an app with “a bizarre political satire that is largely about race and inappropriate for children.” However, he addressed a Boondocks comeback in the interview. O’Neal reports that Aaron suggested that developments are close. What the creator says on record is, “Certainly all the rules have changed. And at the end of the day, I still have to follow the rules. Back in the day, The Boondocks, as crazy as it was, was following the rules. Newspaper rules, Adult Swim rules.”

McGruder is also co-writing a show for Amazon titled Black America which will be a fictional history show where emancipated black Americans receive three Southern states as reparations for slavery.

dream hampton Speaks About The Horrors Of Making Surviving R. Kelly

In the last week, the six-part documentary Surviving R. Kelly aired on Lifetime. The investigative work examines the extensive abuse allegations against the three-time Grammy Award-winning singer. Kelly’s accusers are all women of color, many of whom were minors at the time. In the documentary, each goes into detail about the sexual misconduct and physical abuse they suffered from the onetime superstar. The work also addresses alleged sexual abuse that R. Kelly experienced during his childhood, which he referenced in his 2012 memoir.

dream hampton is an executive producer of Surviving R. Kelly. A former editor at The Source in the early 1990s, hampton also worked extensively on Decoded with JAY-Z, in addition to multiple film and television credits. Following the premiere of the documentary that gave Lifetime its highest ratings in nearly two years, dream hampton spoke to The Karen Hunter Show on Sirius XM.

Dame Dash Discusses The Rift R. Kelly Caused Between Him & JAY-Z Because Of Aaliyah

Speaking to the show by phone, hampton discussed what she learned through this work. “When I went into this project, I was clear that he was a predator and that he targeted young and vulnerable girls. I don’t think I knew he was an abuser, and I don’t mean to sound naive, but I just I didn’t think physical abuse was a part of his repertoire. I certainly didn’t know having to listen to a woman after woman talking about being denied food and movement. I mean we about to get into a couple of episodes where you’re going to hear testimony of girls talking about having, you know, they couldn’t leave the room unless he told them to and all of them didn’t have bathrooms in the room. So they [had to use] slop buckets. His runners would put slop buckets in the room…I don’t think I was prepared for his sadism.”

Some of the documentary’s most jarring accounts come from Sparkle. In the late 1990s, the singer also known as Stephanie Edwards was a protege of R. Kelly’s and released her gold-certified eponymous debut album through Robert’s Rockland imprint. In Surviving R. Kelly, Sparkle says that it was her then-14-year-old niece who appears in a leaked pornographic videotape alleged to be made by and involving R. Kelly. In 2008, during a trial against R. Kelly, Edwards testified, and added that she introduced the singer to her sister’s daughter. Another woman in the documentary, Lisa Van Allen, also alleges Kelly had sexual encounters with the 14-year-old. Van Allen says she was unaware of the girl’s age at that time. She claims to have learned later during a rare conversation at a time when the singer allegedly kept the pair separated without his presence.

A Zulu Nation Veteran Details The Alleged Decades Of Corruption Under Afrika Bambaataa (Audio)

On The Karen Hunter Show, dream hampton spoke about the significance of Sparkle’s appearance and testimony in the documentary. “I would say that Sparkle was a really big get, she’s not someone who’s spoken. She didn’t do the interviews that you’ve seen in Buzzfeed and other places. She hasn’t talked since she did that, you know, since she testified at [the 2008] trial and lost her career, you know, a lot of these kids don’t remember Sparkle.” hampton points to 1998’s “Be Careful,” a career launchpad for Sparkle, as it featured R. Kelly. “That video cost a couple hundred thousand dollars. So she was there, there was an investment in her. She was gonna be Faith Evans; she was gonna be whatever she was gonna be.” In Surviving R. Kelly, Sparkle recalls how detailed her mentor’s instructions were for the video, down to wardrobe. She also says that the song about an abused and heartbroken woman is troubling in retrospect, given that R. Kelly wrote them. “[Sparkle] gave it all up and she gave up her family. Her family didn’t talk to her for 10 years after she testified at that trial, members in her family.” Sparkle’s latest song, “W.A.R. (We Are Ready),” plays at the close of the doc.

hampton says she wished that Lady Gaga had participated in the documentary. In 2013, Gaga and R. Kelly collaborated for the female singer’s “Do What U Want.” The pair also performed the video single on SNL and at the American Music Awards. Terry Richardson, a photographer and video director who has been accused of sexual misconduct, directed the video. That work was eventually shelved. In Surviving R. Kelly, Chance The Rapper appears. He admits regret for working with the fellow Chicagoan on 2015’s “Somewhere In Paradise” collaboration with Jeremih.

Beastie Boys’ Ad-Rock Takes The Side Of The Women Accusing His Father Of Sexual Assault

While calling into Hunter’s show, dream also spoke about the legal challenges surrounding Surviving R. Kelly. “The things that I learned making this documentary that couldn’t make it in for legal reasons, you know, this isn’t just me on Twitter. A&E is a publicly traded company. They own Lifetime, Bunim/Murray is a production company that’s been in business as long as it has because they have a team of lawyers. So, there are so many things that I can’t talk about, and will never talk about, and quite frankly, you don’t want to. It’s so dark and sad and traumatic. I wish that [R. Kelly] would have gotten help [early on].”

dream also addressed Aaliyah’s mother’s disapproval of the doc. “I mean, I can’t imagine [how she feels]. You know, you never get over losing a child and I’m not gonna comment on Aaliyah’s mom’s comment. I will say that I was incredibly mindful. You know, Aaliyah’s my homegirl. She’s from Detroit, you know? [I] knew her, you know, very not well, but I knew her and I didn’t want to spend, out of the two hours, we spent about 11 to 12 minutes on Aaliyah’s story.”

According to TMZ, R. Kelly’s legal team previously warned Lifetime against broadcasting the documentary. Last month, an advance screening of Surviving R. Kelly evacuated following threats of a shooting.
