21 Savage Getting Hamstrung By ICE, Can’t Tour Outside U.S.

21 Savage is currently caught in the middle of an immigration case that is putting a sizeable dent in his touring career. The Atlanta-based rapper is currently awaiting a court date to resolve his status and ability to travel abroad but at the moment isn’t allowed to leave the United States to do one of the more financially significant portions of his profession.

TMZ reports:

As TMZ reported … Savage was arrested in Atlanta back in February and placed in ICE custody. Turns out he entered the U.S. legally from the UK back in 2005, but his visa expired and he’s been here illegally for years.

The rapper wasn’t even able to get a work permit for 8 months, which meant he couldn’t work domestically. He finally got one last month, so at least now he can work in the U.S. … but traveling out of the country is out of the question until he gets things cleared up with immigration.

The outlet adds that immigration courts in Atlanta have been besieged by a record number of cases, causing an effectual logjam of sorts. It might be years before the 27-year-old star will have his case heard and he still faces potential deportation as well.

The ongoing saga of 21 Savage has sparked a much-needed conversation about immigration and the reach of the law. In a new interview, the Atlanta rapper talks about his ordeal, the potential in facing deportation, and much more.

The New York Times exclusively writes:

Do you remember first arriving here when you were young?

Yeah, everything was like, bigger. I come from the poor side of London. My grandma house is real skinny. So when we first moved here, we was living in the hood still, but it was, like, way bigger. The toilet size, the bathroom size, it was just different. But I fell in love with it. It’s all I know.

Did you have a British accent?

Yeah, I had a accent, ’cause my first day of school they was making fun of me so I beat somebody up, and they was calling me “taekwondo kid.” My mama whupped me, she made me stay in the house. So I know I had a accent, but I been here 20 years — I don’t know what happened to it.

Do you remember when you became aware that your status wasn’t settled?

Probably like the age when you start to get your driver’s license. I couldn’t never take driver’s ed, I couldn’t never go get a job. About that age.

21 Savage Is Released By ICE On Bond

Nine days after he was arrested by U.S. Immigration And Customs Enforcement (ICE), rapper 21 Savage was released on bond today (February 12). Per reports, he has been granted an expedited hearing. The artist born She’yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph was taken into custody on February 3 in Atlanta, Georgia. At that time, ICE labeled 26-year-old a “United Kingdom national,” and stated that he was “unlawfully in the United States.” Reports at that time indicated that the Slaughter Gang rapper faced deportation. Additional information suggested that Abraham-Joseph entered the U.S. lawfully in 2005. However, according to representatives, he was awaiting approval of a new visa at the time of his arrest this month. 21 Savage Didn’t Face Deportation Until He Became A Positive Influence The Daily Beast published a statement from 21’s team this morning. “In the last 24 hours, in the wake of the Grammy Awards at which he was scheduled to attend and perform, we received notice that She’yaa was granted an expedited hearing. Today, 21 Savage was granted a release on bond. He won his freedom.” On behalf of 21, lawyers thanked family, friends, and supporters. New Details Suggest 21 Savage Is A Victim, Not An Impostor In the last week, it was reported that JAY-Z and Roc Nation are assisting 21 Savage in his fight for freedom. Additionally, “rockstar” collaborator Post Malone wore a shirt with his name on it. Post performed with the Red Hot Chili Peppers on Sunday night (February 10).

Jay-Z Hires Lawyer, Demands Immediate Release Of 21 Savage

Hovito has decided to come to the aid of 21 Savage.

According to confirmed reports, the Hip Hop mogul has hired high-profile attorney Alex Spiro to defend the rapper, whose recent immigration issues could leave him deported to the UK indefinitely.

Savage, whose real name is Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was arrested by ICE agents on Super Bowl Sunday in Atlanta after it was reported that the “Bank Account” rapper had overstayed his Visa. 21 Savage came into the country with his mother when he was seven, but his expired Visa expired back in 2006. It was also revealed that Bin-Abraham-Joseph was born in Newham, London instead of the British island of Dominica as it was previously reported.

“We are not going to stop until he is released, bonded out or in front of a judge … What we have here is someone who overstayed their Visa with an application pending for 4 years – not a convicted criminal that needs to be detained and removed but, by all accounts a wonderful person, father, and entertainer who has a marijuana offense which was vacated and sealed,” said Savage’s attorney.

21 Savage Confirms He Was Born In The United Kingdom

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon - Season 6

The ongoing ordeal that 21 Savage is enduring as the result of his arrest and detainment by ICE officials had new details added on Tuesday (Feb. 5). The rapper confirmed that he was indeed born in the United Kingdom, but came at an earlier age than what was widely reported.

The Blast reports:

21 Savage is going on the record for the first time, through his reps, and revealing the timeline of his international travels, claiming he has actually been in the United States since the age of 7. He claims he left for a month in 2005 and came back but had a valid visa.

ICE has claimed that is when he came to the country for the first time at the age of 12.

According to Savage’s birth certificate, the star was born in Newham, a borough in London, in 1992.

Reps for Savage are adamant he lost his legal status “through no fault of his own,” and say he applied for a visa in 2017, once he realized his illegal classification.

The outlet adds that Savage’s family are all here legally and some have become naturalized citizens.

21 Savage’s Legal Team Hard At Work On Rapper’s Release

The 2018 NBA Awards

The ongoing saga involving rapper 21 Savage and his ordeal with ICE officials over his reportedly expired visa, new wrinkles to the story are being added. The Atlanta artist’s legal team is currently fighting for 21’s release and say he should be freed as he faces no charges nor is he a flight risk.

The Blast reports:

The rapper’s attorney, Charles H. Kuck, tells The Blast, that 21 Savage — real name She’yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph — was picked up by ICE “based upon incorrect information about prior criminal charges and now refusing to release him on bond of any amount, despite the fact that he has a pending U-Visa application (as the victim of crime) with USCIS, and that he has relief from removal available to him.”

Kuck says Savage “has never hid his immigration status from the US government. The Department of Homeland Security has known his address and his history since his filing for the U Visa in 2017, yet they took no action against him until this past weekend.”

The attorney argues that 21 Savage cannot be held because he is neither “a threat [to] the community or a flight risk to not show up at their hearings. Obviously, our client is not a flight risk, as he is widely recognizable, and a prominent member of the music industry. Likewise, Mr. Abraham-Joseph is clearly not a danger to the community, and in fact, his contributions to local communities and schools that he grew up in are examples of the type of immigrant we want in America.”

21 Savage’s situation isn’t unique as many immigrant families who bring children with them to the States often overstay their work visas as noted in the outlet’s report. 21’s U-Visa application was still pending approval so he was most certainly known to authorities prior to the arrest.
