Kevin Durant Lists His Top Five Favorite Rappers on Hot 97

Kevin Durant joined Hot 97 on Tuesday and gave the Ebro in the Morning team his top five rappers list. Now located in the heart of Hip-Hop culture, Ebro felt it necessary for KD to dig into the heart of the culture during their conversation.

Drake… I mean you got to go with the three Cole, Kendrick, Drake… and I like Thugga…” Durant said. Reluctant to pick a fifth artist due to the relationships he has in the industry, Durant chose Gunna as his number five.

Jay-Z received honorable mention on the two-time Finals MVP’s list but also noted that Jay-Z is in a separate category from current artists saying the 4:44 rapper is on the Mt. Rushmore of rap.

Ebro asked Durant for his favorite Drake album to which the Maryland born Superstar said Take Care and If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.

Drake famously trolled the Golden State Warriors during the NBA Finals last season but Durant knows that it was only for the fans and he and Drake are cool in real life. “He knows he can’t talk shit to me on the basketball court. It’s gonna always backfire,” Durant told Rosenberg.

KD also mentioned Freddie Gibbs during the interview as one of the artists he is currently listening to.

Durant also addressed rumors during last season of him going to the other New York City franchise, the New York Knicks to which he admits he never truly pursued.

“I thought about it yeah, but I didn’t do any deep analysis on the Knicks,” KD said. “I think a lot of fans look at the Knicks as a brand and expect these younger players in their lifetime don’t remember the Knicks being good… I saw the Knicks in the finals but the kids growing up after me didn’t see that so that whole brand of the Knicks isn’t cool to them as say a Golden State Warriors or even the Lakers or the Nets now. The cool thing right now is not the Knicks.”

Ebro Darden is taking his talents to an additional form of Rap media. This week he starts a new executive position at Apple Music.

In an exclusive report by Billboard the radio talent has been appointed as Apple Music’s Global Editorial Head of Hip-Hop and R&B. According to the story Darden will oversee a team of writers and editors to drive the streaming service’s online content. He outlined his intended direction for the new role in an interview.

“First things first is making sure that we’re firing on all cylinders in the best way possible, helping consumers find the music that they love and also helping artists connect with consumers in a real way. Once I learn about what’s needed to achieve that, it will be about looking ahead and figuring out ways to serve the communities where hip-hop and R&B music is made,” he explained.

Rachel Newman, Global Director of Editorial, detailed the designation via a statement. “We’re excited that Ebro is joining us in a full-time capacity. Having dedicated his life and career to hip-hop, R&B and pop music, he has so much to offer. One of Ebro’s most defining characteristics is that he has great ears for where R&B and hip-hop are transcending and evolving to beyond even the borders of the U.S. He’ll obviously take a leadership position for us not just in hip-hop and R&B but also in the communities where the music is made, which is also exciting and something unique to Ebro.”

Darden joined Apple Music back in 2015 as a host for the Beats 1 station. He will continue hosting his Ebro in the Morning show on Hot 97. Prior to his tenure on the morning show he served as the radio station’s Vice President of Programming from 2008-2013. He starts his new position immediately.

The New Year has brought a new job for Hot 97’s famed personality Ebro Darden. Billboard reveals Old Man Ebro will be the new Global Editorial Head of Hip-Hop and R&B for Apple Music. The position began for Ebro today (Jan 2.) and will not affect his roles as a host on both Hot 97 and Beats 1 Radio.

“We’re excited that Ebro is joining us in a full-time capacity. Having dedicated his life and career to hip-hop, R&B and pop music, he has so much to offer,” said global director of editorial, Rachel Newman. “One of Ebro’s most defining characteristics is that he has great ears for where R&B and hip-hop are transcending and evolving to beyond even the borders of the U.S. He’ll obviously take a leadership position for us not just in hip-hop and R&B but also in the communities where the music is made, which is also exciting and something unique to Ebro.”

Ebro detailed his desire is to connect consumers and artists where it is mutually beneficial for both parties.

“If we’re doing our job,” Darden continues, “we’ll be able to get down at the community level and connect with people to not only help artists service their communities but help those communities thrive. This is a global position as well. So, as we build this out, I’ll be doing the same thing I want to do in America in the U.K., Africa, India, Japan, Brazil and other countries.”

Congrats to Ebro on his new position.

Media personality Ebro Darden caught flak after inviting Kodak Black on his Hot 97 radio program and seemingly cornering him into the uncomfortable subject of the rapper’s sexual assault case. Trick Daddy, who also hails from Florida like Kodak, offered Ebro the taper and the fade but the host claims he was just trying to be real about the situation.

Sitting with Nadeska Alexis, Ebro explained on Beats1 that he wasn’t at all trying to paint Kodak as an evil person but does believe the issue of sexual assault deserves a discussion.

“I was trying to show him that we take it seriously,” Ebro said. “You’re a young guy, but I also have to acknowledge the people watching this, and we can’t just gloss this over and act like it didn’t happen.”

He added, “I acknowledged he had a tumultuous past,” he said. “I didn’t even want a response from him, I actually put it forward so that the people watching that know what he’s going through and either have been through sexual assault themselves, know some people who have and just know that it’s a serious conversation.”

Trick Daddy didn’t take kindly to the interview, which prompted Kodak to storm out from the chat which he later claimed was a bid to protect his career and image.

“Ebro, you tried a young n*gga. Kodak my lil n*gga, n*gga. If nobody ain’t gon step up, I’m a step up, n*gga. You tryna be a fake ass Charlamagne. There’s only one Charlamagne Tha God, p*ssy. Keep Kodak name out your mouth. I want smoke, n*gga,” Trick Daddy said.

Butthurt Bob: Akademiks Goes At Ebro For Interviewing Vic Mensa [Video]

Akademiks is in his feelings—again. The Everyday Struggle host and avid Twitch user recently took issue with Hot 97 giving one of his biggest critics a voice.

As per Hot New Hip Hop the DJ turned Hip-Hop know it all has taken issue with Ebro Darden for his interview of Vic Mensa. Earlier this week the Ebro In The Morning radio show invited the Chicago MC for an in-person sit down to discuss his new album and much more.

During the Q&A the topic of Akademiks came up and Vic made it clear it isn’t on sight when he finally sees him. “I heard Akademiks was the informant for 6ix9ine, what’s to that?” he added. “Livingston man? I don’t know. I can’t comment on Livingston man.”

Apparently, this was not taken so well by Livingston (Ak’s government name) who went on a video rant while playing Fortnite no less. “Vic Mensa is f***ing garbage. You’re not popping in the streets. I don’t care what Roc Nation signed you for, you’re still wack”.

Ebro also caught some smoke as well. “Salute to Hot 97, by the way Ebro you’re a real sucker for how you tried to conduct that interview. You’re a sucker in a lot of ways to be honest. You’re kind of out here failing looking for ratings. You’re doing some really weird sh*t for ratings my dude,” he explained. Akademiks went on to trash one of Vic’s new songs and blasted the rapper and radio host throughout the live stream.

Mensa took issue with the blogger over his coverage of the Chicago Rap scene during a 2017 appearance on Everyday Struggle. From there the two have gone back and forth on social media calling each other out.

Kodak Black Walks Out Interview After Ebro Brings Up Sexual Assault Case

In promotion of his new album, Dying to Live, which drop Friday, Kodak Black made a brief stop in New York.

During his interview on the popular Hot 97 show Ebro in the Morning, the Haitian rapper walked out when Ebro brought up his sexual assault case. Kodak addressed the issue at the beginning of the conversation by stating he had “the case in control.” They then began a normal conversation.

Ebro’s crew and The Finesse Kid talked about the song that popped him off “No Flocking,” and the song that has him popping now, “Ze Ze.” They spoke on XXXTentacion. Kodak also expressed a joyful feeling in response to being featured on JAY-Z’s End of the Year TIDAL playlist.

Things got ugly at this point. At the conclusion of the interview, Ebro returned to Kodak’s legal situation, causing an awkward atmosphere in the studio. He offered the opportunity for the 21-year-old Florida Boy to come back and speak in detail about the case that goes to trial in April.

“We take sexual assault here serious and we can’t get into detail, but we hope to have you back so that we could have a deeper conversation because this is a serious topic,” said Ebro.

With a confused look on his face, Kodak responded and gave an ultimatum.

“I feel like sometimes when niggas like me going through shit, y’all be entertained by bullshit. Change the subject or I’m finna walk out.”

Ebro rejected the offer and Kodak left subsequently.

In February of 2016, an alleged victim accused Kodak of pinning down, biting and raping her while in a hotel in Florence, S.C. Trial begins in April 2019 and is facing 30 years in prison if convicted.

Ebro Brings Up Kodak Black’s Sexual Assault Case During Interview, Rapper Walks Out

Hot 97’s Ebro Darden was interviewing Kodak Black when he brought up the rapper’s pending sexual assault case in South Carolina. Despite addressing the topic carefully, the rapper felt a ways and just like that, the interview was a wrap.

Instagram Photo

If you don’t know, Kodak Black is scheduled to go on trial for sexual assault in South Carolina next year. The incident allegedly occurred back in February and he was indicted on criminal sexual conduct charge.

As for Kodak at Hot 97, the topic actually came up near the conclusion of the interview, with Ebro saying they hoped they could discuss it at a later date. Clearly, Kodak wasn’t feeling the vibe, and Ebro wasn’t with being told what topics are appropriate.

Ebro took to Twitter with his side of the story. “I was tryna have a balanced convo with Kodak Black & not ignore the serious allegations against him but also not ask specifics to make his situation worse… and he wanna get an attitude with me?? Nah….,” he tweeted in explanation of a clip of the interview’s that is now making the rounds.

He added, “I thought we was having a good, balanced talk with Kodak Black, I guess he thought otherwise…”

Of course, Twitter has various opinions as to how everything went down. Check some of the responses in the gallery.

Kanye Calls HOT 97’s Ebro for Colin Kaepernick And ‘Plays Himself’

It seems that whenever we hear Ebro and Kanye in the same sentence, we know it is about to go left. And we are not talking politics.

Kanye reached out to Old Man Ebro via a mutual friend named T. Mills to beseech his assistance in coordinating a call between Colin Kaepernick to meet with Donald Trump. Over the last few days, Kanye has been making grand overtures to make this happen on social media and during televised interviews. Kap did exactly what most of his supporters believed he should have done: Paid him dust.

In what we hope is his last resort, Kanye gets the number from T. Mills and calls Ebro on his cell. All are grateful, because we know what happens when Kanye calls up to the radio station. It still went weird. Kanye shifted the request from hoping for a call, to wanting a meeting at The White House on Oct. 11th. Ebro shut that down with one statement, “Yeah, nah. We not doing that.” and to his listeners hit the DJ Khaled button that exclaimed, “You played yourself.”

Kanye could not understand why an invitation to Colin had to include Ebro. When Kanye (and T. Mills) tried to clear up that the invitation was to Colin Kaepernick and not the radio personality, Ebro answered firmly, “When it comes to Colin Kaepernick it is a ‘we.’ There are people standing with Colin Kaepernick, rallying around him. We are not doing that. Y’all think we are playing games.”

While there are a lot of reasons why Team Trump would want the former NFL player to meet with the POTUS (midterm elections are around the corner and this photo-op would send signals to thousands of impressionable voters who could be persuaded by the smoke and mirrors), many believe there is nothing beneficial to the Black and Brown community and the integrity of Kaepernick’s cause if he did.
