During the conversation, Minaj revealed how she heard about the death of her father and how it influenced her album:

The first verse. The thing why it’s confusing a little bit is because my documentary was originally going to be out with the music, but because the music wasn’t out, I didn’t want to put the documentary out. It’s a great documentary. But anyway, because [it wasn’t out], people are a little bit lost, because they don’t have any context. So I’m going to make it quick. The first verse was me talking to… “You never got to meet Papa.” Okay, it’s me speaking to my father.

My father had just passed. So right after I had the baby, and it was during Corona, and nobody knew what was going on, so, one day, I was rocking the baby and I don’t normally have the phone on me when I’m rocking him. Because at that time, I was mad strict like, “Oh, that [radiation] is going to get in my child, don’t put the phone by my child.” So normally, I wouldn’t have it.

But that day, as I’m rocking him, the phone rings, and I see it’s my father. I normally would not have picked up, because I don’t like to be on the phone with the baby there. I would’ve called him back. Something said, “Pick up the phone.” I picked up, he was very happy, and he was like, “Baby, I could come on Monday” Because he had been waiting to be able to come to Cali to help me. I kept on saying, “Come on out.” He wasn’t really happy, but I knew that, when he came be with us, we were going to be happy.

He is this amazing, great person, who livens up the whole house. I was like, “Yes, we were going to get help.” And then, we went to bed, and sometime late, while we were all asleep, the phone rang. And it was my mother, telling me that my father was in an accident and that she didn’t know what was going to happen, and she would call me back. And then, everything started spinning, literally, because now, also, I just had my baby. After I had my baby was the first time in my life that I ever fainted. I never knew what it felt like to faint, but I’m already hypersensitive with everything. So to get that call, and it’s the exact replica of a call, I had in about four or five dreams, but it was the exact replica of one particular dream I had about this.

[In the dream] the person was saying, “Such and such, your mom, we’re going to call you back and let you know how it went.” But this call now is with my father. And I’m like, “Wait a minute. I dreamt this.” But I remembered, in the dream, I didn’t get the call back. I didn’t remember how it ended. So I called my pastor and we started praying. But two nights before that, I had already texted three, four people, because it was including my mother. And I said, “Something bad is happening, and everybody needs to pray.”

But anyway, because I knew the two days before, I saw all this blood coming out of someone’s head laying on the floor, but the person was conscious, they were scared, but it was just pouring out in the hair. And I’m like thinking, “Whatever, whatever.” I sent that text to everybody like, “This is crazy.”

And then, two nights later, this happened. So I opened the album with saying, “You never got to meet papa. He sweet proper, he keep Mama on my toes.” What else I said? “You never got to meet Papa.” So I call my son Papa Bear. So I’m telling my father, “You never got to meet Papa.” And then, I begin to explain the time from my mother first calling me, telling me he was in an accident, to her calling me, telling me that he didn’t make it. So I’m like, “The waiting, the pacing, the raving.” And at the end, “I just believed you’d awaken, a memory in the making. Call me. Won’t you call me? Are you gone already?” Because I couldn’t believe so fast from accident on.

A few hours earlier. He was the happiest that I had heard him in a long time. But anyway, but what was interesting, why I said, ” Are you gone already?” is because I knew he was gone already. Because while we were praying, the prayer changed to not like being “Help him or duh, duh, duh.” The way the pastor just started speaking him was like calling him back.

Ebro Confirms Kendrick Lamar Will Drop A Single Before The Super Bowl

Isaiah Rashad Confirms Kendrick Lamar is Working on New Music

After taking a brief hiatus from the booth, Kendrick Lamar is returning with avenges. First, he’s doing a halftime performance at the nation’s biggest games, Super Bowl LVI, and now he’s returning with new music.

Music media personel Ebro Darden broke the news. On Wednesday’s episode of Rap Life Review on Apple Music, Ebro read a note from the show’s producer, Sasha, which stated that the Compton rapper is dropping on Friday.

“What I’m reading here provided by our producer Sasha… the way this reads, it sounds like it’s confirmed that we will get a single from Kendrick Lamar before his performance,” said Ebro on the show. He then added, “with the release of his single to be debuted ahead of the performance.”

It’s uncertain if this single is leading up to a new album from K.Dot, but in 2021, Kendrick said that he will be producing his last TDE album.

It’s doing hip-hop justice just getting new music from Kendrick. It’s a classic every time he drops.

Kendrick’s last album came in 2017, Damn, which won him a Pulitzer Prize for Music. Since then, Lamar executive produced the Black Panther soundtrack.

His album before that came in 2015, To Pimp a Butterfly. The jazz- and funk-inspired album hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and Top Rap Albums charts and spent 125 and 79 weeks on each, respectively. The album went on to earn 11 Grammy nominations — including for album and song of the year.

And let’s not forget his first album, good kid, m.A.A.d. city. The albumdebuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboards Top Album Sales chart dated Nov. 10, 2012, and now spent 450 weeks on the Billboard 200. It’s currently the longest-charting hip-hop studio album in history.

In case you missed it, Jim Jones and DJ Drama dropped off an absolute banger in their new collab project, Gangsta Grillz: We Set The Trends. To give insight on their first collaborative project in 15 years, the two popped up on Apple Music 1 with Ebro Darden to talk about the creation and what else the two have in the works.

After DJ drama revealed the new project was a product of the duo’s natural friendship, Jim Jones gave an update on what he has coming.

“I got six albums done, completed already. So now we going to start with the Gangsta Grillz,” Jones said. “Then we going to go into the Lobby Boys, from Lobby Boys, we going to go into the Yung Berg album, from the Yung Berg album, we going to go into the Latin album I got, after the Latin album I got, I’m going into the Byrdgang Compilation. After the Byrdgang Compilation, I’m going to the Scram Jones project that I have. And then I’m going to do a whole Jim Jones project that I’ll be working on during this year while all these projects are coming up.”

Jim Jones also acknowledged the resurgence of New York City hip-hop.

“I feel like we coming back wholeheartedly with the Fivios and all the young energy that they’re putting out there. With the drill music and how the drill music is starting to move further down south into the west coast,” Jones said. “We took something from Chicago and made it our own. Now it’s New York drill. It’s a sound that we known for, it’s just so much going on. So I like the way that the music industry is going in as a whole. The money is better, the stream’s work in our favor, and New York we back on the rise. No disrespecting nobody else, but we been in a black hole for a long time and people have been throwing stones at us. So now to see us rising above that black hole makes me feel very good.”

Agree that New York is coming back off the shoulders of drill? You can hear the full conversation between Jones, Drama, and Ebro here. The We Set The Trends project is available below.

French Montana Speaks On His Rap Peers Surpassing Him

French Montana Got Amnesia

French Montana has been creating waves in the rap game for more than a decade. The rapper has been cultivating a space in rap where he’s friendly with just about everyone. The evidence can be found on most of his projects, including the recently released They Got Amnesia. In a new interview with Ebro Darden’s Rap Life Radio show, Montana was extremely open about watching those same friends reach new heights in rap and move beyond him.

“Yeah, it’s hard,” Montana told Ebro around the nine-minute mark. “I’m going to celebrate, but right now, I just want to stay laser-sharp to focus on getting some things out the way. That is like certain time. What I realize about people that be affected by those kind of things, sometime the train pass you and you don’t even realize it.”

“You chasing the high instead of chasing that train that you should be on. You know what I mean? I feel like I seen a lot of my peers that came from less fortunate places and accomplished so many things.”

“You chasing the high instead of chasing that train that you should be on. You know what I mean? I feel like I seen a lot of my peers that came from less fortunate places and accomplished so many things.” French continued.

While Montana is being open about his personal feelings, he’s also burying old beef, namely with 50 Cent.

Riiight: Smoke DZA Chops It Up With Ebro Via FaceTime, Talks Working With T-Pain & More

Smoke DZA

Source: Smoke DZA / Apple Music

Smoke DZA is incredibly slept on and his catalog is far more potent than several Hip-Hop acts of his era; if you follow our CRT FRSH playlist then you’ll know we’ve featured him there in the past. The Harlem wordsmith hopped on FaceTime with Ebro Darden for Apple Music to chop it up on a variety of topics, including his solid new project, A Closed Mouth Don’t Get Fed.

The chat between opens up with the extremely prolific DZA (which stands for Dream Zone Achieve) surprisingly detailing his troubles with writer’s block. However, it appears that he’s got plenty to say with Ebro expertly zeroing in on some of the standout tracks from A Closed Mouth Don’t Get Fed.

With features from Grisdela Records shooter Westside Gunn, Flipp Dinero, Dave East, Tish Hyman and George Kush’s R.FC. comrade Nym Lo, the project shows off the many lanes DZA rests comfortably in. Another standout feature takes place on the track “Dark Web” with T-Pain on the hook, providing what DZA refers to as “ear candy” for the listener.

“I’ve never had a record where I went into it and knew it was gonna be big…working with T-Pain, the hitmaker himself, I knew I had a shot at making a good ear candy record,” DZA shares.

Speaking of the aforementioned Griselda unit, DZA shows appreciation for what they’ve been able to achieve and becoming major stars without comprising their artform in the slightest.

“It warms my heart. You know I love this sh*t. It’s all full circle, I’ve been with them since the beginning,” DZA says of the Buffalo soldiers, and we share that same sentiment at Hip-Hop Wired.

Check out Smoke DZA and Ebro Darden’s full FaceTime interview below for Apple Music. We’ve also included the stream for A Closed Mouth Don’t Get Fed below as well.

Ebro Darden Says Pharrell Would ‘Destroy’ Kanye West in a Producer Battle

Hip-Hop heads have been lit on Instagram and Twitter when discussing the Verzuz producer battles but the one battle that even the creator of the event wants is Kanye West vs. Pharrell.

Ebro Darden of Hot 97 in New York jumped on Twitter to cast his ballot for Pharrell over Kanye if the battle was to ever happen. ” Pharrell would destroy Kanye,” Ebro posted on Twitter. ” Pharrell has NORE, Busta, Beyonce, Clipse, Timberlake, NERD, Britney Spears… I can’t believe I’m even explaining this.”

Ebro added that Kanye’s archive consists of mostly Kanye West music along with other beats that were co-produced. The Beats 1 host cited Mike Dean, Kid Cudi, and Travis Scott as co-producers Kanye needed.

Of course, Pharrell came up as half of The Neptunes, the other half being Chad Hugo who co-produced with Pharrell.

Kanye really got his start as a key producer for Jay-Z and Roc-A-Fella in the early 2000’s before his own career took off. Not including his own G.O.O.D. Music artists, Ye’s production catalog includes Twista, Keyshia Cole, Lil Wayne and more.

Timbaland as one of the creatives behind the Instagram live producer battles posted on social media about the idea of a Pharrell vs Kanye situation but there is nothing officially in the works as far as we know.

RZA and DJ Premier went head to head on Saturday night in a battle of the legends. Ebro scored it 11-10 in DJ Premier’s favor.

Ebro Compares Eminem’s Rap Career To The Everyday Lives Of Black People, Twitter Isn’t Having It

Pharrell Williams Celebrates 41st Birthday With SpongeBob SquarePants Themed Party - Arrivals

Source: Bryan Bedder / Getty

Last weekend Eminem had social media in a frenzy when he dropped his latest album, Music To Be Murdered By, and while people were divided about Slim Shady’s “controversial” album content, Hot 97’s Ebro took it upon himself to praise Em’s talent and calling out his haters.

Yesterday the veteran Hip-Hop radio personality “Old Man” Ebro took to Twitter to give props to Eminem for doing his thing though recognizing “Eminem’s success comes from him being white, he’s even said it.” That being said, he followed up that tweet by explaining his feelings that “The disdain for him comes from him being successful @ something Black people own. His love for the culture is why he worked so hard to be great and get respect.”

Going deeper into Em’s grind in the Hip-Hop game, Ebro went on to equate Shady’s run in rap to that of every Black person in any professional field.

Eminem treats Rap how Black folks have had to treat life… be 5x better, work 5x harder than everyone and still not necessarily get respect.”

Truth be told, Ebro isn’t wrong. While most people recognize that Marshall Mather’s rap game is top notch and out of reach of most of his Hip-Hop peers, a lot of people brush him off just because he’s, well, white. Heck, even Hip-Hop OG Lord Jamar dismissed Em’s successful run because he couldn’t relate to his trailer park content i.e. white folk culture, and evidently he’s not alone in that sentiment.

We guess that’s why Ebro took it upon himself to address the issue and make the comparison he did on Twitter. Whether or not he’d be able to change minds based on that metaphor remains to be seen, but the Twitterverse took issue with Ebro’s comparison and let him know you can’t compare lives when it comes to white people choosing a profession in entertainment versus Black people working in and around a system designed to oppress minorities.

What do you think? Is Ebro making the right analogy behind Em’s success and the hate he gets or is he way off base? Let us know.

Gucci Mane Has An Idea Who Should Play Him In His Biopic

Gucci Mane Suggests These Two Actors Should Play Him In His Biopic

Source: Prince Williams / Getty

Last year we learned former trapper, now rapper/fitness inspiration Gucci Mane has biopic coming out based on his best selling autobiography. While the project has no release date yet, Gucci has a good idea of who should play him in the film.

Gucci Mane took a break from threatening to give your favorite Breakfast Club radio personalities the fade and sat down with Beats 1 Radio’s Ebro to talk about his new album Woptober II. During the conversation, the topic of his biopic came up, and he gave an update on the film that Paramount Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are attached and who should play him in the movie.

Guwop expressed interest in playing himself but was also opened to allowing two other actors playing him. “I would like to do it, but you know I’m open to somebody else doing it as well.” Pressed further, he revealed he would like 28-year-old Snowfall star, Damson Idris, and Power star 45-year-old Omari Hardwick.

“The guy who plays the lead character in Snowfall, I think he’s dope. I feel like Ghost should play me at the end.”

Based on Gucci’s thinking, the film will be broken into different parts with the actors portraying him at different points in his life. When asked how the film is coming along, the “I Get The Bag” rapper said, “We’re still writing the script.” You can watch the entire interview below.

Ebro Denies TMZ Reports of Hot 97 Banning 6ix9ine’s Music

Earlier today, TMZ reported that Hot 97 plans to ban Tekashi 6ix9ine’s music when he gets out of prison. Ebro addressed the report earlier this morning on the Ebro In The Morning radio show, saying he would never talk to anyone from TMZ. He name-dropped a number of the station’s DJs that played Tekashi 6ix9ine’s music, including Funk Flex, DJ Drewski, and DJ Wallah.

The headline on TMZ read, “Tekashi 6ix9ine, Hot 97  Shunning Music Unless… “According to Ebro, that was a false statement.

“I don’t care what people say ’cause when that Tekashi music come out, guess what I’m doing? I’m playing it everyday,” he says.

“Goofball NY n***as created Tekashi 6ix9ine and supported the streets,’” Ebro said. “When he drops new music imma play that sh*t every day just to sh*t on y’all stupid f**ks.”

Some of 6ix9ine’s fans chimed in on the situation. Ebro responded by calling him a pedestrian who doesn’t know sh*t.

Prior to his arrest, Tekashi 6ix9ine was the king of trolling online. He often taunted a number of rappers and it worked in his favor. Ebro believes the TMZ story is gearing up to place 6ix9ine right where he left off. It will be interesting to see once he is released.

Last week, 6ix9ine signed a deal worth $10 million with his former label 10K Projects, for an English and Spanish album. The guy who was once facing close to 57 years in prison for his unlawful activity with the Nine Tr3 bloods will allegedly be released before Christmas of this year.
