Talib Kweli Says The New Black Star Album With Madlib Is Done

Nearly two years ago, Yasiin Bey spilled the beans that Black Star was at work on a sophomore album. In February of 2018, the artist formerly known as Mos Def told Colorado audiences that he and Talib Kweli were working on an album with Madlib. “New Black Star with Madlib, Talib Kweli, Yasiin, coming soon,” the Brooklyn MC said, “All Madlib, all day. 2018, Madlib, Black Star. Madlib Black Star.” The project was touted as an official follow-up to 1998’s Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star. Now past the 20th-anniversary (which included some touring), Talib gave Ebro Darden’s Beats 1 show an update that this project is completed. The news came in a clip that celebrates Gang Starr’s One Of The Best Yet album release. Joined by DJ Premier, Ebro video conferences O.O.T.B.Y album guests including Royce 5’9, Kweli, Nitty Scott, and M.O.P.’s Billy Danze. Black Thought, Yasiin Bey & Freddie Gibbs Educate MCs Over A Madlib Beat “So, Black Star Madlib is a thing?” Ebro asks, while speaking to Talib. “Yes. That’s a confirmed thing; I listen to it all the time,” Kweli responds.

Gang Starr Delivers New Album ‘One Of The Best Yet’

Hip-Hop heads have been buzzing about the new Gang Starr album since the release of the J. Cole assisted “Family and Loyalty” release. The day has officially come.

One of the most influential groups in Hip-Hop has returned. DJ Premier and Guru right in line with what fans will want from the pairing. After Guru passed in 2010, hope for the album seemed to go out of the window. DJ Premier was holding out.

“I never lost faith, or wavered. I still felt it inside of me, it just happened to be nine years later (after Guru’s passing)” Premier said. “We all want the things we want right now, but I’m a patient guy. I hung in there and just kept believing.”

The album began to be created in September 2017, with Guru’s ashes sitting on top of the production console of Premiere in an urn given to him by the late rapper’s family. The final result is One Of The Best Yet.

“This album means everything to me. It’s a continuation of what I never wanted to end” Premier stated. “It’s a very foreign place for me and very emotional. I get happy, sad, excited; my feelings are kind of all over the place. But predominantly, just very happy to be making music with Guru again.”

One Of The Best Yet brings Royce Da 5’9″, Nitty Scott, Talib Kweli, Ne-Yo, Q-Tip, M.O.P. and more. All 16 DJ Premier produced tracks are available below.

I get happy, sad, excited; my feelings are kind of all over the place. But predominantly, just very happy to be making music with Guru again.”

One of the Best Yet will be 16 tracks deep and aside from Cole, Q-Tip, M.O.P., Royce Da 5’9″, Ne-Yo, Nitty Scott, Talib Kweli and more will hit the album, which is entirely produced by Premier.
