Paramount+ Announces New Documentary ‘MIXTAPE’ Feat. Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled, DJ Drama & More

Paramount+ Announces New Documentary 'MIXTAPE' Feat. Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled, DJ Drama & More

Paramount+ has announced the premiere of MIXTAPE, a new documentary that delves into the influential role of mixtapes in launching hip-hop into mainstream culture. The film will exclusively debut on the streaming service on August 1 in the U.S. and Canada, and on August 2 in the U.K., Australia, Latin America, and Brazil, with additional international markets to follow later in the year.

MIXTAPE tells the story of how hip hop persevered and thrived through mixtapes, with DJs serving as tastemakers and creators of the genre’s sound. The documentary highlights the cultural significance of mixtapes as currency and indicators of being “in the know.”

“Hip-Hop is 50 years old and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate its journey and contextualize its evolution than through the story of the mixtape. Every voice in this film played a critical role, especially the DJs who, as KRS-ONE says beautifully in the film, risked everything to ‘bring us the music’,” said Omar Acosta, director of MIXTAPE.

Producer Tony Touch added, “It’s an honor to be involved in this film and to help tell the real story of the mixtape, its origins, its impact, and its ongoing relevance for the culture.”

The MIXTAPE features interviews with a star-studded lineup of artists and industry figures, including 2 Chainz, A$AP Rocky, DJ Khaled, Lil Wayne, Mike Tyson, and more. Produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, Mercury Studios, and Saboteur Media in association with Def Jam Recordings, “MIXTAPE” is directed by Omar Acosta and produced by David Kennedy, Tony Touch, Nick Quested, and Daniel Seliger. The official soundtrack, titled “The Def Tape,” is set to be released in August via Def Jam Recordings.

The Jamaican Jig?: Safaree Is Accused Of Scamming A Rapper For $1K

Covid-19 has taken away a lot streams of revenue from musicians. One rapper is claiming he got finessed by your favorite fur coat wearing bike enthusiast.

As spotted on Hot New Hip-Hop The Breakfast Club recently had an in depth conversation about the recent news where it is alleged that Kevin Hart’s personal shopper helped himself to millions of dollars worth of luxury items. During the discussion the crew also discussed a recent story where an emerging rapper claims he got taken for a thousand dollars by struggle rapper turned reality television star Safaree. The man gave an explanation of how he got finessed.

“This how he got me. He hit me up first actually on Instagram,” he said. “He was like, ‘Yo, your track is hot.’ This a big producer… He told me that he could do a little promo for me, throw my track on Spotify, on the playlist for me and all that for $1,000. So, I paid him, and weeks and months go by. So, I’m hitting him up. He said, ‘Oh, I forgot you on this tape so I got you on the next project.’ It was supposed to drop in November. So, after November, he completely stopped responding and he basically got me out of $1,000, so I just have to take my L.”

DJ Envy would go on to give his take on the matter and reminded listeners that mixtape scams have been a thing since the pandemic stop all touring and live shows. “There’s these people that do mixtapes,” the Queens native explained. “If you see a bunch of different artists, they’ll say, ‘Hey, we’ll put you this mixtape.’ They pay the artist to host the mixtape and the artist hosts the mixtape, they get ten songs from ten different people. And when they get the 10 songs, the artist does the drops and they put the mixtape out. It probably wasn’t him, it probably was a company like that that does the mixtape type of thing.”

Several artists ranging from Benny The Butcher to Fat Joe have participated in this promotional offer but according to an in depth report conducted by DJ Booth’s Editor-in-Chief Brian “Z” Zisook, most of these playlists do not average more than 100 listens. Safaree has yet to publicly comment on the matter.

You can listen to DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha God and Angela Yee discuss the situation at the 33:45 mark below.

Wiz Khalifa Releases New Project ‘It’s Only Weed Bro’

Wiz Khalifa It's Only Weed Bro

Source: Taylor Gang / Taylor Gang

As his fans wait for his next official album Wiz Khalifa is still catering to their needs. The Pittsburgh rapper has just dropped a new project that keeps things simple yet effective.

The Marijuana marvel teased at dropping some new tunes last week. On Saturday, February 8 he alerted his followers on Twitter that he will be making good on the missed promise.

The result was It’s Only Weed Bro. This seven-song drop finds the Taylor Gang boss man flossing his signature flows over some classic samples. Included in the throwback vibes are Mobb Deep’s “Survival of the Fittest”, Weldon Irvine’s “Morning Sunrise” which was famously used for Jay-Z’s “Dear Summer”, and Atlantic Starr’s “Silver Shadow”.

In terms of delivery and bars Wiz is right in pocket with his signature mix of weed, women and wanderlust. On “Smoking Section”, which borrows Common’s “The 6th Sense”, he reminds the Taylors he hasn’t missed a step. “You might think I got time to kill cuz I’m so real / a lot of ni***s I could checked this year but I’ma chill / I don’t have to say they fake in time they will / when it come to being certified I’m signed and sealed”.

KRS-One Shows Why He’s A Miracle On A Song From His New Mixtape

KRS-One is recording a new project, Street Light. “This is the light for the street, and this light of the street,” he explains of the title. “[The other meaning of the title is] the actual street light was the original source of Hip-Hop’s power.” Pioneers, including the Cold Crush Brothers, have documented using New York City’s public utilities to power turntables, mixers, and speakers in the 1970s block parties and park jams. In a way that was not possible in the 1980s and 1990s, Kris Parker is documenting the creation of his forthcoming mixtape in real-time. Following two recent videos that show The Teacha bringing his books of rhymes into the recording booth, KRS creates a song. KRS-One Speaks About The Power Of Hip-Hop To Change The World (Video) Joined by a female vocalist, the R&B-tinged track features a chorus, “I am a miracle.” One of Hip-Hop’s most influential MCs sprinkles in his lyrical seasoning from an adjacent room. “I woke up realizing I am a miracle / Starting with the umbilical cord, I am a miracle / Forget whatever I can afford, I am a miracle / Walking with the strength of a lord, spittin’ lyrical,” he charges. “How am I even spitting at all? That’s a miracle / ‘Thirty years, KRS-One, how are we still hearing you?’” The Boogie Down Productions co-founder asserts that he represents the pinnacle of culture, riding the beat. The MC/producer flashes a smile while laying his vocals, which keep the same cadence. “Standing on principle / While others steady dissin’ you / But still showin’ love livin’ above, that’s a miracle / They tried to put the fear in you / Act like they wasn’t hearin’ you / But that was minimal / You remain the miracle / No hate or bitterness, ’cause both are reciprocal / Not to become hateful toward hate? That’s a miracle / The rent due / And the landlord? He ain’t hearin’ you / But the check with no money on it just cleared for you,” spits the Criminal Minded author (along with late partner DJ Scott La Rock). KRS-One Is Working On New Music & He’s In The Studio With Dr. Dre In the second half of the video, KRS-One thanks Dr. Dre (who he took a studio photo with in 2018), while detailing the upcoming work. “We recorded it all these studios and got all these different sounds. But I needed to come to a studio like this so that everything can now sound the same. Everything can now have the same power, inflection, this kinda thing—tone, and all that.” Video shows the often under-acknowledged producer tweaking knobs at the boards. In the last two minutes of the video, KRS teases another excerpt from these recordings. The creator says that Street Light will be available at tour stops at the KRS-One site. Wonder What A 1977 New York City Park Jam Sounded Like? Press Play… (Mix) Videos featuring KRS-One are available at AFH TV. We are currently offering free 7-day trials.
