Controversial Radio Host Don Imus Dead at 79

Radio Personality Don Imus died in Texas on Friday. The 79-year-old shock jock’s cause of death has not been officially announced. Imus was hospitalized on Tuesday at Baylor Scott and White Medical Center.

Imus became a radio legend with his controversial politically incorrect takes but in 2007 he was heavily criticized for racist remarks made about the Rutgers Women’s basketball team whom he dubbed “nappy-headed hoes.”

Imus was fired at the time of the incident but landed another opportunity with Fox Business Network in 2009. Imus apologized to the Rutgers team, but his apology went without forgiveness.

Prior to the 2007 controversy, the nationally syndicated radio host could be heard on CBS radio and on MSNBC giving his hot takes on everything from sports to social issues and politics. Imus has been compared to radio legend Howard Stern.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Imus was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009. Imus also struggled with drug and alcohol addiction throughout his life.

Radio Host Fired After Calling For “Nice School Shooting” to Distract Trump Impeachment

A radio show in Denver was canceled on Thursday after the host made controversial remarks about gun violence. The Chuck and Julie radio show on 710 KNUS was terminated after Chuck Bonniwell called for a “nice school shooting” to distract from the Trump impeachment.

The radio station issued a statement condemning Bonniwell’s remarks on air. “Given the history of school violence that has plagued our community, 710 KNUS confirms that an inappropriate comment was made on the Chuck & Julie show by co-host Chuck Bonniwell.”

The remarks made by the conservative host hit a little harder in a state where the Columbine School shooting took place. Bonniwell did apologize for what he said claiming that it was meant to be a joke.

Milwaukee Radio Station Bans Drake Tracks During Raptors Playoff Battle

Toronto Raptors vs Philadelphia 76ers

With the Toronto Raptors and Milwaukee Bucks locking horns in the Eastern Conference Finals for the 2019 NBA Playoffs, a radio station in  Cream City has taken drastic measures. KISS-FM in Milwaukee will put a temporary hold on playing Drake songs as his team looks to even things up in the series.

From OnMilwaukee.com:

And local radio is no different, as the hosts of 103.7 KISS FM proclaimed today that hip-hop star Drake has been temporarily banned from its airwaves.

Or, put otherwise, this Kiki doesn’t love you, they are not riding and they are currently leaving from beside you.

Why all the anger at Aubrey? You see, Drake isn’t just a Raptors fan. He’s not even just a Raptors superfan, merely seen sitting courtside and politely applauding at Toronto home games. No, he’s a literal member of the franchise as a “global ambassador” for the team. The team’s training center has been renamed after Drake’s OVO brand, and one of the Raptors’ uniforms even uses Drake’s signature black-and-gold color scheme, putting his imprint literally on the team. So he’s much more than just a celeb fan. He’s an embedded and very annoyingly chirpy celeb fan who sits courtside by the team as if he’s an assistant coach and gets into tiffs with the players actually playing the game.

The Bucks and Raptors square off tonight at 8:30 PM with Milwaukee hosting and owning one game to zero lead in the best of seven contest.

New York Radio Giant, Bob Slade Loses Fight with Kidney Disease

Sundays will never be the same. Popular host and New York radio veteran, Bob Slade lost his fight with kidney disease, leaving fans and supporters heartbroken.

Most notable for his stint as a News Director at NYC’s popular adult contemporary station 98.7 Kiss FM, his take on news was culturally sensitive as well as hard hitting.

With a deep milk-chocolatey-voice, his commentary was perfect for his weekly show with Bob Pickett and James Mtume called Open Line. On the show, the team broke down the psychology and pathology of racism and social justice. Whether looking at in through the lens of education, police brutality, pop culture or politics, the trio (with Slade playing an intricate part in the content development of the show) are predecessors to the work of millennial media darlings like Shawn King and Deray, that use their voice to drive attention to discrimination towards people of color.

Today many are mourning.

“RIP, to my brother, friend, and partner, Bob Slade,” tweeted the Rev. Al Sharpton, whose own radio program airs on the same station . “For a quarter of a century we struggled together, you are irreplaceable. Thanks for everything.”

If you tuned into “Barbie Goin Bad,” one of two freestyles Nicki Minaj dropped over the weekend, you heard the song’s shade-heavy outro in which she claimed radio is “trying to blackball a b*tch.” Now, after urging DJs not to play her music last summer, DJ Envy says he in fact does not play Minaj…but thought he was the only DJ excluding the the rapper from his rotation.

It all started last summer when DJ Envy responded to the Nicki Minaj and DJ Self beef. “Nicki can have an opinion on Self, Self can have his opinion on Nicki,” Envy commented at the time. “But when you start saying, ‘I got hungry N-words that’s going to come up there’…nah, that’s thee problem…You don’t threaten no DJ over his opinion. Now, if Self said something foul and disrespectful, then yeah it’s all good—but not over his opinion.” “Every DJ on this station better stop playing her,” he added. Tune into that conversation below.

Now, following Nicki Minaj’s claim that she’s being blackballed, Envy told fans “I thought I was the only one who didn’t play her record.” Tune into that comment below.

Does Nicki Minaj deserve to be blackballed after what went down with Self? Chime in.

LL Cool J Files Lawsuit Against Rock the Bells Festival

LL Cool J filed a trademark lawsuit against the Rock the Bells Hip Hop festival founded by Chang Weisberg, as per The Blast.

The Hip Hop veteran claims that Weisberg and promoter Guerilla Union, Inc. tried to file the trademark two decades after he released the song of the same name. The suit says that they filed the trademark without permission, and LL petitioned to cancel all of Guerilla Union’s trademarks and his request was granted.

The entertainer says the company still made efforts to trademark the name. He is now asking for an injunction prohibiting the promoter and founder from using the name.

“Rock the Bells” was the third single on LL Cool J’s debut album, Radio, released in 1985. He also launched Rock the Bells Radio in March on Sirius XM.
