The Source’s Top 5 Rappers of 2024

Reflecting on 2024, five artists stood above the rest, reshaping the landscape of hip-hop with their creativity, chart-topping hits, and cultural impact. Here’s The Source’s top rappers of 2024 and what they accomplished.

1. Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar cemented his legacy in 2024 with the surprise release of his sixth studio album, GNX, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and dominated the charts like no other. Seven of the album’s tracks, including “Squabble Up” and “TV Off” featuring Lefty GunPlay, secured spots in the Hot 100’s top ten, an unprecedented feat. Notably, “Not Like Us,” fueled by a lyrical battle with Drake, became the most-streamed global song of the year, marking Lamar’s first-ever No. 1 on the annual streaming chart.

GNX was not only a commercial triumph but also critically acclaimed, leading to Kendrick’s nominations for multiple 2025 Grammy Awards. As if that weren’t enough, Lamar was confirmed as the headliner for the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show, a nod to his undeniable star power. The rapper also announced the Grand National Tour with SZA, set for 2025, promising fans another unforgettable chapter in his illustrious career.

2. Future

Future made history this year by dropping We Don’t Trust You, We Still Don’t Trust You, and MIXTAPE PLUTO, three chart-topping albums in just six months. This incredible run made Future the first hip-hop artist since The Beatles in the mid-1960s to achieve such a feat. Each project debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with MIXTAPE PLUTO securing additional milestones by landing all 17 tracks on the Hot 100.

Both We Don’t Trust You and We Still Don’t Trust You featured anthems that resonated deeply with fans, showcasing Future’s signature blend of introspection and hedonism. These albums further solidified his reputation as one of rap’s most consistent hitmakers. Beyond the charts, Future continued to push boundaries, leaving an indelible mark on the genre with his record-breaking achievements.

3. GloRilla

GloRilla had a breakout year that placed her firmly among hip-hop’s elite. Her debut album, Glorious, featuring collaborations with Megan Thee Stallion, Latto, and T-Pain, debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, marking her first top-10 entry. The project included viral hits like “I LUV HER” featuring T-Pain and “WHATCHU KNO ABOUT ME” featuring Sexyy Red, both of which exploded on TikTok and inspired countless trends.

As Billboard’s Top Female Rapper of 2024, GloRilla demonstrated her ability to blend Memphis grit with mainstream appeal, captivating audiences with her authenticity and electrifying stage presence. Her rise was further amplified by high-profile collaborations and her knack for creating music that resonated across generations.

4. Tyler, the Creator

Tyler, the Creator continued his streak of artistic excellence with the release of CHROMAKOPIA, an album that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 299,500 equivalent album units in its first four days. The project showcased Tyler’s unique ability to craft experimental yet accessible music, with standout tracks like “ST. CHROMA” and “THOUGHT I WAS DEAD” earning spots on the US Top Songs chart.

What made Tyler’s achievement even more impressive was the album’s rapid rollout—he announced and released CHROMAKOPIA within two weeks, receiving widespread critical acclaim. The album’s success, coupled with the viral resurgence of his 2017 hit “See You Again” on social media, demonstrated Tyler’s enduring influence and versatility as an artist.

5. Megan Thee Stallion

Megan Thee Stallion reminded everyone why she’s a powerhouse in 2024. Her deluxe album, MEGAN: ACT II, introduced fans to new collaborations with artists like TWICE and RM of BTS, alongside her first rock track with Spiritbox. The album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, becoming the year’s highest-charting rap album by a woman.

Megan also made waves with her philanthropy, receiving the genLOVE Award for Outstanding Philanthropy at the Golden Heart Awards, and her “Hot Girl History” moment as the host of the 2024 MTV VMAs. On the viral side, her collaboration with Japanese rapper Yuki Chiba on “Mamushi” dominated social media, while her new documentary offered fans a glimpse into her journey through fame and personal challenges.

Future Releases Highly Anticipated ‘MIXTAPE PLUTO,’ Drops New Video for “TOO FAST”

Future Releases Highly Anticipated 'MIXTAPE PLUTO,'

Diamond-certified, three-time GRAMMY® Award-winning hip-hop star Future continues his unstoppable streak with the release of MIXTAPE PLUTO today. The 17-track project, a nod to Future’s raw essence, also arrives alongside the official music video for “TOO FAST,” directed by Kid Art. Set against the backdrop of Harlem, NYC, the visual reflects the highs and lows of Future’s whirlwind lifestyle.

MIXTAPE PLUTO was executive produced by 808 Mafia’s Southside, with Wheezy serving as co-executive producer. Paying tribute to the legendary Dungeon Family and the late Rico Wade, the album cover showcases infrared purple lighting beaming from the Dungeon Family house in Atlanta, where Future’s musical journey began in Wade’s mother’s basement. The mixtape, notably without guest features, showcases Future’s unfiltered artistry and lyrical prowess.

In addition to the digital release, exclusive merchandise and physical versions of MIXTAPE PLUTO are available on freebandz.com. Fans can purchase limited-edition t-shirts, CDs, and two vinyl variants—black and green—featuring 11 key tracks from the album.

This project follows the massive success of Future’s earlier collaborations with Metro Boomin, WE DON’T TRUST YOU and WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU, both of which topped the charts. These albums cemented Future’s dominance in 2024, with the single “Like That” featuring Kendrick Lamar spending three weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

MIXTAPE PLUTO represents Future’s return to his roots, offering fans a pure distillation of his sound and influence. Stripped down and unapologetically authentic, the mixtape is a powerful statement from one of hip-hop’s most inventive and influential figures, solidifying his legacy as he closes out an iconic year.

Future Releases Teaser Video For “Too Fast” From His ‘Mixtape Pluto’ Project, Set For 9/20 Drop Date

unnamed 11

Today, diamond-certified three-time GRAMMY® Award-winning hip-hop luminary Future formally details his highly anticipated new project MIXTAPE PLUTO. Continuing Future’s prolific game-changing 2024, the mixtape event of the year is set to be released on September 20, 2024. Pre-save/pre-add the mixtape here

Today Future also details an exclusive run of merchandise and physical product available for MIXTAPE PLUTO at freebandz.com, now available for pre-order. Items include bundles with limited edition t-shirts, a CD, and two vinyl variants in both black and green.

Additionally, Future continues to give fans a glimpse into the world of MIXTAPE PLUTO with the release of a new teaser for the song “TOO FAST.” Future has been igniting a frenzy across social media over the past few weeks in the run-up to the project’s release, previously sharing clips for various tracks across the mixtape, including hints of collaboration with Travis Scott.

Check out the “Too Fast” preview HERE

Earlier this week, Future wrapped up a sold-out arena run with Metro Boomin, the critically acclaimed WE TRUST YOU TOUR. The run saw the two superstars traverse across North America – including historic nights at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, Atlanta’s State Farm Arena, and Los Angeles’ brand-new Intuit Dome. Billboard called the show “a testament to how deep Future’s catalog and bag of hits really iswhile GQ celebrated the fact that “two great albums and a rejuvenated live show confirm Future’s powers are as strong as they’ve ever been.”

unnamed 10

Appropriately titled, the tour was in support of Future and Metro Boomin’s explosive, chart-topping collaborative albums released earlier this year: WE DON’T TRUST YOU and its follow-up, WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU. The albums highlight the duo’s magnetic chemistry–which Rolling Stone calls “seamless”–and went on to capture the entire music industry’s attention, piquing competitive interests in ways not seen in years. The albums officially landed Future his ninths and tenth number 1 albums on the Billboard 200, while the single “Like That” featuring Kendrick Lamar spent a blistering 3 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. This run became, as Billboard stated, “the biggest story in rap.”

And now, with MIXTAPE PLUTO, Future continues to shape the sound of hip hop as a new chapter is written in the career of one of rap’s most inventive and influential wordsmiths.  A body of work stripped down to pure unadulterated Future, it’s simply Pluto at his core essence. It’s MIXTAPE PLUTO.

One of the night’s standout moments was Metro Boomin’s homage to André 3000. He took the stage wearing a unique archive jumpsuit from OutKast’s historic 2014 Reunion Tour, designed by André 3000. The jumpsuit is part of a rare 47-piece collection that debuted at Art Basel Miami in 2014, featuring different iconic phrases on each piece.
