New Nas Album “King’s Disease” Drops Tomorrow

Nas’ highly eagerly anticipated new twelfth solo studio album titled “King’s Disease” is set to drop tomorrow Friday, 21 August on Mass Appeal Records and Def Jam Recordings. The 13-track album is entirely produced by Hit-Boy and features the lead single ‘Ultra Black’ which dropped a few days ago. That single drop received wide praise as well as a lot of commentary around his Doja Cat diss, following resurfaced video of the Doja in Alt-Right group chats as well as old music from her that coded racist language familiar to Alt-Right racists on the dark web. The new Nas release is set to contain a range of diverse features, including Big Sean, Lil Durk, Anderson .Paak, Brucie B, Charlie Wilson, Don Toliver, Hit-Boy himself also on the mic, Fivio Foreign, A$AP FERG as well as a resembling the original line-up of The Firm which never came to full complete fruition (AZ, Foxy Brown, and most notably Cormega).

The coming together of the original line-up of The Firm (Nature out for Cormega) some 20 years later on track 11 in the appropriately ‘Full Circle’ will immediately raise eyebrows for many hip hop fans, and appears long in the works with Nas and legendary fellow Queensbridge Cormega long squashing their beef near 15 years ago. It will be well-received, particularly by East Coast and 90s/2000s hip hop fans, with Cormega having himself dropped a handful of classic albums since The Firm issues of the mid-90s and the culture long wanting them to reappear on music together. Interestingly the final track titled ‘Spicy’ featuring Fivio Foreign and A$AP FERG is listed as a bonus track, opening the door up for potential multiple format releases across regions and future deluxe editions too.

King’s Disease will be Nas’ first solo studio album since his 7-track release that dropped back in June 2018 which was produced by Kanye West, admittingly to mixed reviews in what some felt was a bit rushed and short for a Nas drop. With this new album entirely produced by Hit-Boy as well as being executively produced by both Hit-Boy and Nas together, fans can expect a very traditional sounding album flowing seamlessly from front to back, ultimately with Hit-Boy’s modern twist coupled with Nas’ classic style. Pre-orders are out now for the midnight drop tonight from undoubtedly one of the greatest rappers to ever grace the microphone yet – N A S.

WATCH: Nas Gets Political With “War Against Love” Music Video

Nas received tons of praise for his “greatest-hits-never-heard” compilation album The Lost Tapes 2 when it released back in July, and now the legendary MC is keeping that momentum going with a new music video for the album cut “War Against Love.”

With Jason Goldwatch behind the wheel as director and editor, Nas spits a story that’s realistic, in some instances poignant, and ultimately serves to let us know what really matters when it comes to the world we live in today. Images of poverty, nuclear explosions, the harsh side of the Civil Rights movement and even Agent Orange himself are superimposed with images of blooming flowers, Martin Luther King Jr., birds in flight and beautiful imagery overall — he literally highlights both the good and bad of society as the three-and-a-half minute clip plays out. Underneath it all, Nas can be seen spitting the lyrics to the song with a stoic expression, showing neither grief nor optimism for the images playing before his eyes. In short, it’s a truly impressive body of work that will sit with you well beyond the abrupt ending.

Watch the music video for “War Against Love” by Nas above, and listen to The Lost Tapes 2 courtesy of Mass Appeal Records and Def Jam on all streaming platforms now.

LISTEN: DJ Shadow Unveils Upcoming Double LP ‘Our Pathetic Age’ With First Single “Rosie”

One of the best mixmasters out of the ’90s underground Hip-Hop scene is making his return this year, as DJ Shadow just announced he’ll be dropping a double album filled with collaborations from a handful of rap all-stars.

The lineup for Our Pathetic Age is hefty to say the least, bringing some of today’s new kids on the block together with those we consider to be legends to the game. The features go from Nas, De La Soul, Run the Jewels, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon to rising MCs like Wiki, Dave East and See You Yesterday rapper-turned-actor Stro. The album will also include a few genre switch-ups as well, like Interpol’s Paul Banks and Future Islands frontman Samuel T. Herring — whether or not he’ll be channeling ‘Hemlock Ernst’ is to be determined. From the sound of “Rosie,” the double LP’s beat-thumping lead single, Shadow will definitely be borrowing from all across the music spectrum. The album will be released through Mass Appeal Records, similar to his 2017 EP, The Mountain Has Fallen.

Listen to “Rosie” off DJ Shadow’s upcoming album Our Pathetic Age below, and make sure to look out for the full project to drop on November 15.

Nas Celebrates Mass Appeal Records 5-Year Anniversary W/ Uncle Murda, Jungle + More

Nas

New York rap veteran Nas isn’t done celebrating his record label’s five-year run. The hip-hop pioneer has shared a moment from Mass Appeal Records’ celebration night.

Nasir Jones went to Instagram Friday with a pic of himself alongside fellow musicians including G-Unit’s Uncle Murda.

In May 2014, Nas partnered up with music exec Peter Bittenbender to launch Mass Appeal.

Signing a number of new artists, Nas is also intending to use the label as a base when his contract with Def Jam expires later this year. In an email confirming the project, Nas wrote: “I’m excited to be a part of creating and supporting future careers and legacy artists, promoting love and finding new genius to help the world. I’m going to be as involved as I need to be, but I also want to be respectful of the art and give artists the space they need to grow and become themselves.” The Mass Appeal label will sit alongside the publication of the same name, which was launched last year after Nas and Bittenbender utilised $1.2 million in start up funds. (Clash Music)

Last year, the label secured a global distribution deal with Universal Music Group.

The lucrative deal enables Mass Appeal to promote projects–in more than 60 territories–from artists such as Nas, J Dilla, Run the Jewels, and DJ Shadow. “I’ve been blessed to work with two of the best brands in music, Nas said via press release. “Columbia Records was how I got my start and Def Jam was where I continued that journey. In my next chapter, I am proud to say that I am signing myself to myself. I look forward to releasing many projects in the very near future with Mass Appeal’s new global partnership with UMG.” (VIBE)

Over the past few years, Mass Appeal has kept busy with handfuls of major partnerships.

Mass Appeal started as a magazine in the 1990s, and expanded around 2013 to become a media company, creative agency, and record label under the stewardship of rapper Nas and CEO Peter Bittenbender. Since pivoting into brand work, Mass Appeal has created campaigns and content for the likes of Google, HBO, Soundcloud, and Under Armour–and will now be tasked with shaping the image of the definitive museum for hip-hop.
