Today in Hip Hop History: Run-D.M.C. Gets Inducted Into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 14 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2023 04 04 at 10.25.32 AM

On April 4, 2009, Run-D.M.C. became the second rap group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, after Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five who were inducted in 2007. This honor came well deserved after the illustrious career of the trio. Run-D.M.C. helped to build a musical cross culture as well as serve as the cornerstone artist of one Hip Hop most powerful empires, Def Jam Records. Run-D.M.C.’s brand is timeless and iconic and can be said to be one of the launching boards for Hip Hop culture as a whole.

From their music to their style, Run-D.M.C. has immortalized their image in music history. In honor of this crowning achievement, we have compiled a list of examples to prove as to why Run-D.M.C. is considered to be the icons that they are.

Style

run dmc adidas

It goes without saying that Adidas in and of itself is one of the most popular active wear brands around. Rivaled only by the titans Nike and Puma, Adidas has grown to become a household name in both fitness attire and style. In its early stages, Adidas’ popularity in the Hip Hop community can be largely attributed to Run-D.M.C. Everywhere Run-D.M.C. went they could be seen in head-to-toe Adidas with a gold rope chain and a black top hat. From the jewelry to the full sweat suits to the fat laced, shell-toe low tops, Run, D.M.C, and Jam Master Jay were undoubtedly fly. Their love for the Adidas brand mixed with their popularity in music soon brought them sponsorship dollars and eventually their own signature sneakers. Without their influence, it would have probably been a while before any sneaker brand became so popular in Hip Hop.

Cross Over Appeal

In the past, there have many icons in Hip Hop who have been able to stand the test of time and make it to legend status. Few artists however have been able to retain their respect as a rapper while being able to cross over genres and appeal to a broader audience. Run-D.M.C.’s ability to seamlessly transition between a rock and rap fan base is one of their greatest attributes. The hit single Walk This Way Featuring fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Aerosmith was one of the first of it’s kind. The genius concept to have two of the biggest stars in their respective genres led to a new sense of community in music. Like never before artists hailing from different genres began to collaborate and Hip Hop had finally broken completely into the mainstream. This single and style of rapping broke open the door for current rappers today to expand their support basis across genres.

Influence

The editor of Allmusic wrote that,

“More than any other Hip-Hop group, Run-D.M.C. are responsible for the sound and style of the music”.

It can and has been said that the group helped to move Hip Hop forward with the times. Their sound helped progress the genre out of that heavily funk and disco influenced sound and move toward a more hardcore style of rap. They helped the music transform from dance club-oriented songs like Kurtis Blow‘s “The Breaks” to more aggressive, hard-hitting tracks like their It’s Like That record. This transformation paved the way for the sounds the next generation of rappers such as Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, and Wu-Tang Clan. Outside of rap, artists like KoRN, Rage Against the Machine, and Linkin Park all have styles similar to the one popularized by Run-D.M.C.

The career of this prolific group is instrumental piece of music history as a whole. Their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame only proves that they are important to not only the genre that they concentrated in but were loved and admired by music lovers as a whole. Take some time out today to appreciate the career of one of the greatest music groups of all time.

New Nas Album “King’s Disease” Drops Tomorrow

Nas’ highly eagerly anticipated new twelfth solo studio album titled “King’s Disease” is set to drop tomorrow Friday, 21 August on Mass Appeal Records and Def Jam Recordings. The 13-track album is entirely produced by Hit-Boy and features the lead single ‘Ultra Black’ which dropped a few days ago. That single drop received wide praise as well as a lot of commentary around his Doja Cat diss, following resurfaced video of the Doja in Alt-Right group chats as well as old music from her that coded racist language familiar to Alt-Right racists on the dark web. The new Nas release is set to contain a range of diverse features, including Big Sean, Lil Durk, Anderson .Paak, Brucie B, Charlie Wilson, Don Toliver, Hit-Boy himself also on the mic, Fivio Foreign, A$AP FERG as well as a resembling the original line-up of The Firm which never came to full complete fruition (AZ, Foxy Brown, and most notably Cormega).

The coming together of the original line-up of The Firm (Nature out for Cormega) some 20 years later on track 11 in the appropriately ‘Full Circle’ will immediately raise eyebrows for many hip hop fans, and appears long in the works with Nas and legendary fellow Queensbridge Cormega long squashing their beef near 15 years ago. It will be well-received, particularly by East Coast and 90s/2000s hip hop fans, with Cormega having himself dropped a handful of classic albums since The Firm issues of the mid-90s and the culture long wanting them to reappear on music together. Interestingly the final track titled ‘Spicy’ featuring Fivio Foreign and A$AP FERG is listed as a bonus track, opening the door up for potential multiple format releases across regions and future deluxe editions too.

King’s Disease will be Nas’ first solo studio album since his 7-track release that dropped back in June 2018 which was produced by Kanye West, admittingly to mixed reviews in what some felt was a bit rushed and short for a Nas drop. With this new album entirely produced by Hit-Boy as well as being executively produced by both Hit-Boy and Nas together, fans can expect a very traditional sounding album flowing seamlessly from front to back, ultimately with Hit-Boy’s modern twist coupled with Nas’ classic style. Pre-orders are out now for the midnight drop tonight from undoubtedly one of the greatest rappers to ever grace the microphone yet – N A S.

Today in Hip-Hop History: Slick Rick Drops His Album ‘The Ruler’s Back’ 29 Years Ago

Slick Rick was, and still is, one of the greatest storytellers in hip-hop history. After the promotion and success of his first album, The Adventures of Slick Rick, the British MC continued his ascent to stardom with his sophomore effort The Ruler’s Back.

Slick Rick’s second album was finished rather quickly due to the fact he was hit with a five year stint behind bars. The first and hit single off the album was “I Shouldn’t Have Done It”, reaching number two on the Hot Rap Charts.

Following “I Shouldn’t Have Done It,” Slick Rick released the singles “Mistakes of a Woman in Love With Other Men” and “It’s A Boy.” The project also features production from Mr. Lee and Slick Rick himself. Russell Simmons served as executive producer.

Listen to The Ruler’s Back on Spotify.

Today in Hip-Hop History: LL Cool J Drops His ‘B.A.D.(Bigger And Deffer)’ LP 33 Years Ago

Today in Hip-Hop History marks 28 years since the release of LL Cool J’s third studio LP, Bigger And Deffer, on Def Jam Records.

Recorded in the legendary Chung King Studios in NYC between ’87-’88, this album is one of Hip Hop’s Golden Era classics, which yielded one of the genre’s prototype songs, “I Need Love”, which was dubbed Hip Hop first “love ballad”. This album also solidified LL’s position in the game, from his signature Kangol being exclusively his, since another Queens MC, MC Shan, had once claimed the Kangol crown, to his own personal line of TROOP outerwear and sneakers.

Other timeless tracks on this LP include “I’m Bad”, which was accompanied by a video, the salacious “Kanday”, and the ode to his former DJ “Go Cut Creator, Go”.

Salute to that era of the Def Jam team that put together this classic gem!

Logic’s New Video Shows The Deep Wounds Society Is Inflicting On Artists

Last month, Justin “The Company Man” Hunte published a special video breaking down his personal “Top 5, dead or alive MCs” list. In the visual essay, the prominent video personality, host, and member of the Ambrosia For Heads team explains his choices, which he asserts are purely music-based.

“These five artists all have the highest replay-value for me. All represent what I love most about the art of MC’ing. Artists, students, fans ask me all the time, what do I deem most important when it comes to music? What do I look for in rappers? The answer: voice and imagination—how someone sounds when they find a different way to say something that’s been said a million times throughout history. These five artists exemplify those two qualities.”

Who Are The Top 5 MCs Of All-Time? Allen Iverson Has The Answer.

Hunte explains the following ranked list:

#5: Tupac Shakur
#4: JAY-Z
#3: Kendrick Lamar
#2: Lupe Fiasco
#1: Andre 3000

This week’s episode is a roundup responding to fans. In the video, available for all to view at AFH TV, Justin Hunte also crosses paths with the MC he says he puts at #6: Scarface. At an event, Brad Jordan asks the host (who made an entire 2017 TBD episode praising the Geto Boys member as a G.O.A.T.-worthy MC) about his rankings.

Last Of A Dying Breed: Why Scarface Is The Greatest MC Of All Time (Video)

At the 7:00 mark, Scarface says, “When you put me in that class, I’m not offended. But after 30 years, 30, 30, and I sold a few million records too—and I’m always f*ckin’ consistent. Not once have I done anything outside of what I was supposed to do. Is that right?”

“100%,” responds Hunte.

“So I’ma move me from #6 to #1,” asserts the Houston, Texas who also produces, DJs, and plays guitar.

Not one to debate a legend on his resume, Hunte replies, “I’m wit’ it.”

Scarface continues, “I’m talking about consistency, my ni**a. The ni**a mean. Alright?” Even at planting his flag at #1, Scarface shows love to a peer. “And my favorite rapper’s Nas. Again, the ni**a mean, like mean!

Scarface and Nas worked together on 1997’s “East Coast / West Coast Killaz,” 1999’s “Favor For A Favor,” 2002’s “In Between Us,” 2009’s “Yacht Music,” 2012’s “Hip Hop,” and 2015’s “Do What I Do.”

In 2018, Facemob worked with Awar, Parliament, and Killa Kyleon.

Few artists with the profile of Logic are half as prolific. This week, Bobby Tarantino announced what appears to be his first commercial project in less than three years. After giving fans YSIV (which reached #2 on the charts) only last September, Bobby has another LP in the chamber already. Considering that he pulled together every surviving member of the Wu-Tang Clan for a song on the latest Young Sinatra installment, how will the Def Jam superstar up the ante?

This week he drops what appears to be the second official single and video from his now-revealed upcoming release, and it goes by the macabre title, “I Wrote This In Blood.” This cut embodies Bobby’s purist style of rapping as he lets people know where his head is at presently. He explains the pressures that come with fame and where the mounting stress can lead.

Logic Explains How He Was Able To Triumph & Get All Of Wu-Tang On His Song (Video)

He conveys a clear sense of the stress of always trying to live up to fan expectations, “Searching for bliss / Only led me to searching for hits / Only led me to badder depression / I done learned my lesson / ‘Cause fame never lessen the pain / What if your life was under a glass? / And people tried to dig up sh*t from your past / And tell you what’s good and what’s not / And every time you drop a song they say that it’s wack or it’s hot / And don’t give a damn that it came from the heart / They tear it apart like hyenas / This here for the dreamers / This here for the people that know what I’m saying / All of the people that know what I’m saying / F*ck social media telling me who I should be and just how I should rap / They always compare, they always compare me to others / And try to pit me up against my brothers / Now, why you think so many rappers be overdosin’ at the crib / ‘Cause people just won’t let them live.” The crescendo is a reference to one of Logic’s peers, Mac Miller. Mac fatally overdosed last September in his California home.

The end of the vid reveals in red text: “The 6ixth Studio Album From Logic, Confessions of A Dangerous Mind.” Seeing as Logic’s production partner-in-crime, 6ix, has his name right in the announcement, it’s a good likelihood that he will be handling the bulk of the beats on the project. 6ix has co-executive produced Logic’s catalog since Under Pressure, five years ago. He co-produced the recently-released “Keanu Reeves” single, as well as this new cut.

Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind is also the title of a memoir and subsequent 2002 biopic of Chuck Barris (played by Sam Rockwell). He was a game-show host and creator who also claimed to be a former CIA assassin.

Music by Logic is presently on the official Ambrosia For Heads playlist.
