WATCH: Amanda Seales Says She Does Not Feel Protected by Issa Rae

Amanda Seales Says She Does Not Feel Protected by Issa Rae

Amanda Seales is the latest person to hit Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay and speak her mind. During her visit to the podcast, Seales states that she does not feel protected by Issa Rae.

Seales appeared on Insecure with Issa Rae and revealed how their relationship went south during an Emmys party called the Black Emmys, which Issa was part of planning. Seales stated there was an issue between Seales and her publicist, but Issa Rae would not get involved in the matter. The following year, Seales stated she promoted the party and attended with Insecure co-star Kendrick Sampson but was stopped from entry by a woman who was “white-passing.”

Later in the conversation, Seales says, “I know Issa is doing something within this business that so few people get to do. I know her role is very important and so I’ve always protected Issa. However, there’s been enough instances at this point where I should’ve been protected by Issa and I wasn’t.”

She added, “My protecting of Issa is being turned on me and is something being used against me.”

You can hear it all from Amanda Seales below.

Issa Rae Says The Music Business The Worst Industry She’s Come Across, “I Thought Hollywood Was Crazy”

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Issa Rae spoke on her process for curating the music for the final season of Insecure. During the interview, Rae also shared her thoughts about the music industry, calling it the “worst industry I’ve come across.”

When asked if the music business is a place where good ideas flourish, Rae responded: “It’s probably the worst industry that I have ever come across.” She added that “I thought Hollywood was crazy. The music industry, it needs to start over. Conflicts of interest abound. Archaic mentalities. Crooks and criminals! It’s an abusive industry, and I really feel for artists that have to come up in it.”

Rae said that her feelings towards the industry came about from her experience from setting up soundtracks and hearing what artists deal with day to day. Issa also has issues with how artists are treated by their labels.

“I do not want to be too specific, but even with making our own appointments [for soundtracks] with labels or artists, it would be so intricate. And to find out how artists were treated on other labels… Being a creator myself and knowing what I want in terms of a relationship with a production company or a producer, I’d like to think that we’re more artist-friendly than a lot of other labels and companies out there,” the writer and director said. “I want to revamp things.”

Issa also had a problem with the way music is rewarded. She says that the music industry fails to properly reward music made by Black people despite its commercial success and impact on the culture. She uses Wizkid’s “Essence” as an example of a song that was extremely popular this year but snubbed for a Record of the Year nod.

“Y’all don’t get it. What are you rewarding? This is dumb, but I’ll say it anyway: A song like [Wizkid’s] ‘Essence’  — just absolutely a powerhouse, and yet could not be properly acknowledged by the institution that is supposed to celebrate the best in music — that trips me out. To see Black people and our contributions to music not celebrated in the way they should be — I mean, these aren’t institutions for us.”

Despite her critiques on the industry, Issa wants to change things from the inside. In 2019 she founded Raedio, an imprint music label under Atlantic Records. The goal of the label is to develop up-and-coming artists and break their records.

This is not a test, Insecure is officially back for season 4!

In a teaser that was released via Instagram, the video clip shows Issa Rae rapping to herself in the mirror, a routine her same-named character, Issa, does frequently on the show. Rae took to her social media dropping the trailer and the official release date.

In addition to dropping the teaser and premier date, the trailer also featured this season’s theme—leveling up, which means that we may be receiving answers to a lot of questions left during the finale of season 3.

Fans of “Insecure” were disappointed that the series did not return for its fourth season last spring following the Season 3 finale, which aired in September 2018.

Casey Bloys, HBO’s programming president, told Vulture in April that the 2020 release date had to do in part with Rae’s other commitments, which includes her upcoming romcom with LaKeith StanfieldPhotograph, and her latest announcement, The LoveBirds, with Kumail Nanjiani.

Despite the minor delay, Issa Rae previously announced the return of “Insecure” in September by posting a few behind the scenes photos with costars stars Yvonne OrjiNatasha Rothwell, Jay Ellis, Y’lan Noel and Amanda Seales.

Insecure season 4 is set to return Sunday, April 12.

Issa Rae Confirms 4th Season if ‘Insecure’ is in the Works

Fans of the hit HBO series Insecure can relax now. Issa Rae has confirmed that a fourth season of the Black girl dramedy will be returning soon.

“We’re writing it right now…And we’re shooting in September,” Rae revealed.

That was great news because some thought that the show would not come back to HBO. Back in April, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys confirmed that the series would not return until 2020 due Rae’s busy schedule.

“Issa became a big movie star,” Bloys said. “We’re not the first place to deal with this, but when you’re in business with very creative and talented people, there’s a lot more opportunities for people to do things.”

In addition to the update on production, Rae also shared that the upcoming season will have ten episodes. Previous seasons of Insecure only featured eight.

Speaking on the impact of the show, Issa said, “All of them are based off of real people that are in my life and real situations that have happened,” she said. “Also, a lot of the stories come from a predominantly black writers’ room. There are people and stories from there that we just put in the show.”

Rae has become a movie and shaker on the Hollywood scene. Earlier this year, Rae starred alongside Marsai Martin and Regina Hall in Little and is attached to executive produce Robin Thede’s new comedy series, A Black Lady Sketch Show.

In addition to Rae, Insecure stars Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, Lisa Joyce, Natasha Rothwell, Y’lan Noel, and Amanda Seales.

Issa Rae’s ‘Insecure’ Returning For 4th Season — But There’s A Catch

HBO’s Insecure Block Party

Well, the good news is we’re definitely still getting a fourth season of Insecure… the bad news is it won’t be here until 2020. Issa is booked and busy, so we’ll have to wait until she can pencil her hit HBO series in.

In an interview with Vulture, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys laid out the real for Insecure fans.

“Well, Issa became a big movie star!” Bloys said of Issa, who’s starring in the Little movie with Marsai Martin and Regina Hall. “We’re not the first place to deal with this, but when you’re in business with very creative and talented people, there’s a lot more opportunities for people to do things. Issa, I think, partly wanted a break to come back to it fresh.”

Bloys goes on to say that despite the wait, the timing will actually be perfect. “It wasn’t exactly random that we ended up [scheduling the show] in the spring, right before Emmys… so that the show should get the Emmy love that it has deserved.”

Stay tuned.

Damn, Lawrence: ‘Insecure’ Star Jay Ellis Getting Squeezed By Former Management Company

50th NAACP Image Awards - Red Carpet

Source: Earl Gibson III / Getty

Insecure fans were surprised to learn that Jay Ellis, AKA Lawrence, made a return to the show in its third season after speculation he was no longer part of the cast. The actor’s former management team appears to be trying to ride Lawrence’s comeback all the way to the bank and are putting the squeeze on Ellis’ pockets.

The Blast reports:

According to a lawsuit filed against Jay Ellis by Luber Rolkin Entertainment, they claim that they had long represented Ellis during his acting career and helped him score a major role on Rae’s HBO comedy-drama in 2016.

Luber Rolkin claims the deal was for 10% of all Ellis’ compensation, and that in 2017 the actor had negotiated an “escalated episodic fee with HBO.”

Ellis then allegedly began cleaning house and firing much of his team, including Luber Rolkin, who now believe he was letting people go in a “transparent and intentional effort to avoid paying commissions clearly due and owing to multiple parties.”

The management company says they are owed the 10% fee for seasons 1-2 of “Insecure,” but claim Ellis negotiated a much higher rate for the 3rd season, and beyond.

Ellis does not appear to have responded to the company’s legal maneuver.

‘Insecure’ Co-Stars Confirms Issa Rae’s Engagement

Yvonne Orji and Jay Ellis may have unknowingly spilled all the tea about Issa Rae’s rumored engagement to her longtime boyfriend Louis Diame.

The Insecure co-stars were at the red carpet at the 2019 NAACP Image Awards, and they spoke to Entertainment Tonight, about how they found out about the engagement.

“We’re very excited for her,” Orji said. “We all found out in different ways because we’re all on different text chains,” Ellis added. “We talk at different times, so we all found out at different times in different ways.”

Engagement rumors began swirling last week when Issa Rae graced the cover of Essence Magazine and she was notably spotted with a rock on her ring finger. A couple reports suggested that Issa was spotted on multiple occasions without the ring after the cover was published, however, she was seen rocking it during Mardi Gras which is when she did the Essence photoshoot.

Whether or not they got the approval, we thank Orji and Ellis for spreading the great news.
