‘Insecure’ Co-Stars Confirms Issa Rae’s Engagement

Yvonne Orji and Jay Ellis may have unknowingly spilled all the tea about Issa Rae’s rumored engagement to her longtime boyfriend Louis Diame.

The Insecure co-stars were at the red carpet at the 2019 NAACP Image Awards, and they spoke to Entertainment Tonight, about how they found out about the engagement.

“We’re very excited for her,” Orji said. “We all found out in different ways because we’re all on different text chains,” Ellis added. “We talk at different times, so we all found out at different times in different ways.”

Engagement rumors began swirling last week when Issa Rae graced the cover of Essence Magazine and she was notably spotted with a rock on her ring finger. A couple reports suggested that Issa was spotted on multiple occasions without the ring after the cover was published, however, she was seen rocking it during Mardi Gras which is when she did the Essence photoshoot.

Whether or not they got the approval, we thank Orji and Ellis for spreading the great news.

‘Insecure’ Producer Amy Aniobi Inks 2-Year Deal With HBO

Real to Reel Global Youth Film Festival

Amy Aniboi, a co-executive producer for HBO‘s hit series Insecure, has inked her own deal with the cable giant. Her two-year deal will not interfere with her current role with Insecure and has her working alongside Issa Rae on other works.

THR exclusively reports:

The two-year pact will have Aniobi continue as a co-executive producer of Insecure — which is going into its fourth season — and writing limited series The Dolls with her Insecure colleagues Issa Rae (who will also star) and Laura Kittrell. HBO has also put into development Attachment, a comedy series Aniobi co-created and will executive produce; she’ll also develop new projects for the network.

Attachment, produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, centers on a first-generation Indian-American tech CEO who’s forced to share her tiny New York City apartment with her mother, who’s considering a divorce. The two learn to live with each other — and for themselves.

Aniobi co-created the series with actress and producer Melanie Chandra (Code Black), who will be a consulting producer. Jude Weng (Fresh Off the Boat, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) is set to direct and will also executive produce along with Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine’s Lauren Levy Neustadter.

Aniobi is also in development on three feature-film projects: American Princess at Fox and Bye Bye Bye and Love in America for Universal.

Congratulations to Amy Aniobi.

Insecure Star Issa Rae Levels Up W/ Multi-Picture Production Deal

Issa Rae

“Insecure” star Issa Rae is doing big things with 2019 around the corner. Everyone’s favorite HBO actress and producer has reportedly signed a multi-picture production deal with film powerhouse Columbia.

According to reports, Rae’s ColorCreative production company and Columbia Pictures have agreed on a multi-picture production deal to work and support emerging, diverse screenwriters.

The move comes as the entertainment industry is under pressure to develop films and shows that feature underrepresented talent both in front of and behind the camera. There’s a lot of room for improvement. Films such as “Black Panther” and “Crazy Rich Asians” have demonstrated the commercial appeal of movies with minority leads, but they remain the exception, not the rule. A recent USC study found that only 29.3% of characters in the 100 top grossing movies of 2017 were from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. (Variety)

Rae has since issued a statement to confirm the massive deal is officially in the books.

“Working with Bryan Smiley and Columbia Pictures to further the mission ColorCreative set out to achieve four years ago in creating access for underrepresented writers, has been a dream come true,” said Rae. “All of the projects we are working on are fresh and promising and we can’t wait to continue the work. We hope to set a precedent and inspire the industry at large to invest in undiscovered talent, original IP, and fresh stories and perspectives.” (Statement)

The deal comes just three years after Issa launched her successful production company.

Rae, the Golden Globe and Emmy nominated multihyphenate behind HBO’s Insecure, launched ColorCreative in 2015. Recently, the shingle set up a musical romance, Love in America, at Universal. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Earlier this fall, Issa wrapped up her popular “Insecure” series’ third season.

Issa Rae On White ‘Insecure’ Viewers: “Threw Me All The Way The F**k Off”

Cannes Lions Festival 2018: Day 5

Source: Dominique Charriau / Getty

Issa Rae and her current rise as a leading creative voice was definitely a slow burn, and most probably wouldn’t have expected a show like Insecure to become as big as it has. The star and creator of the hit HBO show can credit white viewers as part of the reason the show is enjoying success at the moment.

Issa Rae was at Cannes this week in where she’ll be receiving a “Performer Of The Year” nod and was part of a candid Q&A discussion. In the chat, Rae revealed that there is indeed a cultural shift in what kind of content is available to viewers and the types of stories that are being told. This includes an increasing number of white viewers that watch shows like Insecure, to which Rae expressed some mild shock.

Variety reports:

But her meteoric rise from the online star of “Awkward Black Girl” to Emmy nominee for “Insecure” isn’t due simply to an ardent black fan base. As TV critic Iris Brey, who conducted the onstage Q&A with Rae, noted, 62% of “Insecure’s” viewers are white.

“That threw me all the way the f— off,” Rae said, to laughter from her listeners. “Which is great. It makes me want to go back in time and find that person [who said], ‘No one’s interested in watching these’” shows about people of color.

“Even white people are tired of seeing white-people shows,” Rae added to even more laughs, “turning on the TV and going, ‘Aargh, I know this story already.’ It’s overdue.”

Rae noted in the discussion a known fact that most of Insecure‘s writing staff are Black women, with one lone white male writer among them.

In the discussion, Rae also talked about Shonda Rhimes and how she’s inspired her and others to lead the way in changing the balance and approach in TV and film production.
