While students at Howard University should be focusing on celebrating their homecoming weekend, instead students are protesting for betting housing conditions on the campus of popular HBCU, Howard University.

According to students, the University has not attended to multiple health violations in the dorms that include rats, mold, and roaches. Amidst the students protesting, multiple artists from Gucci Mane’s 1017 label made the decision to stand in solidarity with the students by not performing in their upcoming homecoming show.

HotBoyWes, Big Scarr, and BiC Fizzle agreed to support the students and later took to Instagram to share their reason for not stopping at Howard, as part of their HBCU tour. “We stand in solidarity with the students at Howard University. No one should be forced to live in unsafe conditions #BlackburnTakeover” #HoodAvenger,” Big Scarr tweeted.

With more coverage of the student’s poor living conditions, the University’s board of trustees made a statement in regards to the current state of the housing. “Simply put, we hear you and we continue to welcome your viewpoints on all matters pertaining to Howard,” the statement reads. “The goal is to cultivate spaces for us to listen and discuss prominent issues on students’ minds.”

Protestors of the Unversity claim that they have been threatened with expelling by the police, including Howard officials. Some students even state that Howard officials are denying them food, as they are locked out of using their campus resources. Check out the post below.

HBCU’s are Experiencing New Record Surges in 2021 Enrollment

HBCU Connect HBCU's Enrollment

Historically Black colleges and universities are experiencing a spike in enrollment.

According to reports, NBC Universal, Inc. Prince George’s County Bureau Chief Tracee Wilkins spoke with leaders from Howard University and Bowie State University about what’s behind the boost in enrollment.

Bowie State University President Aminta Breaux said their enrollment continues to rise every year with students from across the country.

“We’re seeing more students from the West Coast, the Midwest, from the southern states,” Breaux said.

Bowie State expects an eight-percent increase in enrollment this fall, while Howard University had a more than 15-percent enrollment increase last year during the pandemic.

“This has the potential to be our largest freshman class ever… certainly in the last 30 years,” Howard Provost and Chief Academic Officer Anthony Wutoh said.

The numbers are expected to be even higher this fall.

HBCU officials believe calls for racial justice, the attack on the U.S. Capitol and a few other factors influenced students.

“Across the country, those who never heard about HBCUs and didn’t understand the value that we bring to our communities now learning about HBCUs,” Breaux said.

There are so many valuable reasons to attend an HBCU.

Check in with your college or university below and share your HBCU pride.

Howard University Addresses Phylicia Rashad’s Tweet Supporting Bill Cosby

Howard University Addresses Phylicia Rashad's Tweet Supporting Bill Cosby

Howard University denounced Phylicia Rashad’s tweet supporting Bill Cosby.

Rashad is in the hot seat after publicly standing in solidarity with her on-screen husband after his rape conviction was overturned.

The actress was recently appointed as the dean of fine arts at the historically Black university, but the institution issued an official statement saying Rashad’s personal stance doesn’t reflect their beliefs.

“Survivors of sexual assault will always be our priority,” the statement said. “While Dean Rashad has acknowledged in her follow-up tweet that victims must be heard and believed, her initial tweet lacked sensitivity towards survivors of sexual assault.”

The university added that “personal positions of University leadership do not reflect Howard University’s policies.”

“We will continue to advocate for survivors fully and support their right to be heard,” they said. “Howard will stand with survivors and challenge systems that would deny them justice. We have full confidence that our faculty and school leadership will live up to this sacred commitment.”

Howard University didn’t announce plans to take action against Phylicia Rashad, who followed up with her own statement after publishing the controversial tweet.

“I fully support survivors of sexual assault coming forward,” Rashad said in a follow-up tweet. “My post was in no way intended to be insensitive to their truth. Personally, I know from friends and family that such abuse has lifelong residual effects. My heartfelt wish is for healing.”

Do you think HU should strip the beloved TV mom of her position?

Howard University Names College Of Fine Arts After Late Chadwick Boseman

Chadwick Boseman's Wife Files Probate to Control Actor's $1M Estate

The late, great Chadwick Boseman, has been forever immortalized at Howard University, his alma mater.  The prominent HBCU has named their re-established College of Fine Arts to the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts. This comes after news broke that the new college is now helmed by famed actress Phylicia Rashad as Dean.

Not known to most Rashad, also taught Boseman acting while he attended HU.  After his untimely passing, Rashad talked to People magazine about what it was like teaching Boseman in her acting class.  “I remember his smile and gentle way,” she said in 2020. “I remember his unending curiosity and his love of study, studying many things all of the time.

Reported by Variety, Boseman’s family thanked Wayne A.I. Fredrick, President of Howard and the Howard Board of Trustees for giving the honor to the celebrated Boseman.  “Chad fought to preserve the College of Fine Arts during his matriculation at Howard and remained dedicated to the fight throughout his career, and he would be overjoyed by this development,” said the family in a statement. “His time at Howard University helped shape both the man and the artist that he became, committed to truth, integrity, and a determination to transform the world through the power of storytelling.”

The family also said that they felt strongly that with Rashad leading the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, would “inspire artistic scholars for many generations.”

Boseman’s widow, Simone Ledward-Boseman, released a statement, saying how “extremely pleased” she was that Howard has named its fine arts college in his honor, as well as how “elated” she was that Rashad was now in a leadership position as the college’s dean.

“Chad was a very proud Bison–both Howard and Ms. Rashad played integral roles in his journey as an artist. The re-establishment of the College of Fine Arts brings this part of his story full-circle and ensures that his legacy will continue to inspire young storytellers for years to come.”
