Howard University has moved to end its commencement and shifting all remaining instruction to remote and online-only methods in response to potential exposure to the COVID-19 virus. A guest at an event hosted by the institution held earlier in the month has tested positive for the virus thus prompting the announcement.

In a press release issued Monday (March 16) by Howard president Wayne A.I. Frederick, it was revealed at the guest who attended the Charity Day Dinner event on March 7 tested positive for coronavirus. It was instructed that all attendees who may have come in contact with the individual get tested, especially if they exhibit symptoms related to the flu.

From the press release:

I am writing to inform you of a need to escalate the university’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. A guest who attended the Howard University Charter Day Dinner has tested positive for COVID-19 (coronavirus). Out of an abundance of caution, we are asking all March 7 dinner participants to monitor and report to your doctor if you begin exhibiting flu-like symptoms. The DC Department of Health is investigating the case, locating and counseling relevant contacts in accordance with the latest national guidance and protocols. We are working closely with the department and have been advised that the chances of contracting the virus are low.

The individual has complied with DC Department of Health’s guidance to remain self-isolated. Our direct concern is the recovery and well-being of the affected individual and their loved ones. We will continue to prioritize the most vulnerable among us and do everything we can to safeguard the health and wellness of our university staff, students and surrounding communities.

The release goes on to explain that face-to-face instruction will be halted until the end of the semester, and residence halls on the campus will close at 11:59PM ET on Sunday, March 22. The school also said that any student who traveled abroad for spring break cannot return to the campus.

Oldest Ivy League School Loses Again to HBCU in Debate… Yup… Howard Killed Harvard

Harvard University…. established in 1636… holds the distinction of being the oldest college in the United States and considered one of the top institutions of higher learning in the world. However, that history just doesn’t seem to help the Ivy League when they are matched with the intellect of those Bisons from the real H. U.

You got it right! Puffy’s alma mater, Howard University claimed victory over Harvard University at the 10th Annual State NAACP Conference “Great Debate” on October 28th. This would be the second time that the Washington D.C. school, commonly referred to as “The Mecca,” snagged the honor against Harvard.

What were the two subjects? According to Howard News, the following topics were debated: The Impeachment of President Donald J. Trump and Whether of Not Roc Nation, the business affiliated with Jay-Z, should not have entered into a contract with the NFL. Last year, the topics were about Colin Kaepernick’s taking a knee during the playing of the National Anthem during NFL games and the total ban of automatic weapons for civilian use.

Allegedly, the NAACP sponsored debate is the largest collegiate intellectual competition in the nation.

Kanye West Holds Surprise “Sunday Service” at Howard University, Says “Do I look Canceled to YOU?”

Words by Dylan Kemp

Its October, and that means its officially homecoming season. Students across the country are patiently waiting to see if their favorite artists will be performing at their homecoming concerts. Over the weekend, Howard University in Washington D.C. held their annual Yardfest, a weekend long event on Howard’s campus full of concerts and socializing. On Friday, artists such as DaBaby, Saweetie, Juvenile and Rotimi took the stage in front of thousands of students and alumni. Around 6 a.m. Saturday, Howard university students received an email from their administration, saying that Kanye West was bringing his Sunday Service concert to Howard’s campus. Along with Kanye was his wife Kim Kardashian and two of their children, North and Saint.

For those that don’t know, Kanye has been doing his Sunday Service concerts since January. They originally started off as exclusive events held in Calabasas but soon transformed into nationwide events, traveling to cities such as Watts, Detroit, Atlanta, and West’s hometown of Chicago

Some students were thrilled that Ye decided to bring Sunday Service to Howards campus, and others were not here for it due to his antics and controversial support of Donald Trump. During his typical on-stage rants, Kanye said to the audience “I was canceled, but as I stand on the lawn of Howard University, do I look canceled to you?”

West seemed to have struck a nerve with audience members when he asked for black people to not stand in the same place if “they start throwing slave nets again”

After the service, students and professors alike voiced their opinions. Some of them were positive, and others… not so much.

Kanye West’s Sunday Service Pops Up At Howard University

Kanye West has been taking his Sunday Service performance experience on the road in various cities as of late, no doubt to prepare listeners for the highly-anticipated Jesus Is King album. This morning (October 12) as Howard University’s homecoming weekend kicks off, the Chicago superstar brought Sunday Service to the Yard much to the delight of many.

Footage thus far is still coming in via Twitter but from what we can gather, West and his large entourage of performers made their way to the campus grounds of the famed HBCU to deliver music and upliftment as has been the case with previous pop-up performances.

Early reports from Twitter revealed that the visit was largely brief as HuffPost editor Phillip Lewis gave his brief account of the moment.

According to a reporter from local news outlet WUSA, students at Howard were alerted of West’s performance early this morning via email.

Dr. Greg Carr, the chair of Howard’s Afro American Studies department, invited West to the school’s Founder’s Library to offer him some books to take with him on the road in the wake of the artist’s resurgent love of all things MAGA. It isn’t known if West took him up on the offer.

And while critique on Twitter of West’s Sunday Service has indeed been high this morning, there are some who found a reason to praise the move.

Chef Curry: Stephen Curry Finances Howard University’s Golf Team

NBA superstar Stephen Curry launches Howard University golf program, on August 19 in Washington, DC.

Stephen Curry might be best known for his wizardry on the basketball court, but he’s also a big fan of golf as evidenced by his new series, Holey Moley. After a meeting with a Howard University student angling to bring a golf program for men and women to the HBCU, it was announced this week that Curry is financing the entire operation.

NBA.com reports:

The specifics of his contribution were not disclosed. But the athletic director Kery Davis said that the donation is, “one of the most generous gifts in the history of Howard University.”

Howard officials say they plan to have women’s and men’s golf teams for the 2020-21 academic year.

The school had a Division II golf program in the past, along with intercollegiate and intramural club teams.

The 31-year-old Curry, who has won three NBA championships with the Warriors, says he decided to get involved after meeting a Howard student who had been trying to get the university to have a golf team.

“The idea around re-creating Howard’s golf team and turning it into a Division I program for men and women was born on that specific night,” Curry said. “Now, seven and a half or eight months later, we’re here.”

Curry’s passion for golf is clearly exhibited by his hilarious mini golf series, Holey Moley, and he also played the sport in high school while also continuing to hit the course in celebrity tournaments.

Way to go, Stephen Curry.
