YouTube Levels Up, Will Stream Call of Duty & OverWatch League Exclusive As Part of New Deal With Activision

Call of Duty & Overwatch League Will Stream Exclusively On YouTube

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

In its quest to compete with other streaming platforms in the world of gaming, YouTube Gaming just leveled up thanks to Google inking an exclusive multiyear partnership deal with Activision Blizzard.

As part of the multiyear deal, Activision Blizzard will now utilize Google Cloud as the preferred provider to boost its game hosting as well as other technical needs. YouTube will also gain exclusive streaming rights to broadcast the video game developers Esports properties like the upcoming season of the Overwatch League, Call of Duty League, which officially kicks off today (Jan.24), Hearthstone Esports, and more.

YouTube has been looking for a win in the game streaming world. Since it launched YouTube Gaming back in 2015, the world’s largest video site has struggled to compete with the streaming giant Twitch. Things were looking so bleak that the company decided to shelve its YouTube Gaming standalone app due to “confusion” it was causing viewers replacing it with a “game-focused hun” on its site.

Speaking on the decision to join forces with Activision Blizzard, Sunil Rayan, Head of Gaming, Google Cloud stated in a press release:

“We’ve worked closely with Activision Blizzard for the past few years across mobile titles to boost its analytics capabilities and overall player experience. We are excited to now expand our relationship and help power one of the largest and most renowned game developers in the world.”

Pete Vlastelica, CEO of Activision Blizzard Esports added:

“This is an exciting year for Activision Blizzard Esports as we head into the inaugural season of Call of Duty League and our first ever season of homestands for Overwatch League all around the world. It’s our mission to deliver high-quality, competitive entertainment that our fans can follow globally, live or on-demand, and to celebrate our players as the superstars that they are. This partnership will help us deliver on that promise at new levels, by combining our passionate communities of fans and players with YouTube’s powerful content platform and exciting history of supporting next-generation entertainment.”

The announcement has been met with some criticism on Twitter. Here are some of the responses:

Regardless of how they feel, this is a win for YouTube Gaming, whether it closes the large gap between itself and Twitch, which is still the premier destination for Fortnite streamers and Microsoft’s Mixer, which is on the come up thanks to landing Ninja. Time will only tell.

Acitvision Details New ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’ Officer Ranks System

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Multiplayer

Source: Infinity Ward / Activision

We are literally days from the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Activision just revealed in its blog the new way players will be leveling up.

Once players get cracking in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, they are going to immediately notice the change in the progression system. When they begin their campaign for multiplayer dominance, they will see that now they will see the new 55 Enlisted Ranks. Players will unlock new weapons, equipment, perks, Killstreaks and Field Upgrades.

Once they reach Enlisted Rank 55, instead of “Presitiging,” they will enter a new Officer Ranks System. Unlike the Prestige Mode that saw players reset to level 1 and lose their weapons and equipment, the new Officer Ranks System forgoes that option. Instead, you will work through 100 new seasonal Officer Ranks, with each rank unlocking a new unique Officer Challenge.

When a player completes a challenge, they will be rewarded with a special Seasonal Ribbon and XP. If you acquire 10 ribbons, you are granted a distinctive Seasonal Emblem plus an animated emblem.

You also get a cosmetic weapon blueprint if you collect all 100 ribbons.

Being that it is seasonal, the first set of 100 Officer Ranks at launch will rest with the start of each new season.

Players will also be able to upgrade all of the weapons in the games and can be used to unlock new weapon perks, attachments and camouflage. Also announced, players will be able to partake in multi-step objectives and Challenge Missions to earn XP and in-game rewards. You can activate the Challenge Missions from the Barrack menu and are required to play different game modes or use certain weapons to complete the challenge.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launches October 25 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Blizzard Bans Blitzchung For Supporting Hong Kong Protests, The Gaming Community Is Not Happy

Blitzchung Banned By Blizzard For Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Comments

Source: MOHD RASFAN / Getty

If you have any comments related to the current situation going on in Hong Kong, you might want to think twice before you share them. Professional Hearthstone player, Blitzchung was banned for a year by Blizzard following a statement he made in support of the pro-democracy protests.

In a stunning move, Activision Blizzard — one of the biggest American gaming studios — sided with China today. The company came down hard on the Hong Kong native after he expressed support for the protests going on in his home country. During an interview on Sunday (Oct.6), Chung Ng Wai, aka Blitzchung in the gaming world, made the statement “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our time.”  The slogan is commonly used in the protests going on across the city. He made the statement while wearing goggles and a face mask, both items that protesters in Hong Kong don to hide their identities.

Blizzard, in an official statement, announced that it removed Wai from the Hearthstone Grandmaster Finals, banned him for 1-year from pro-play, and took back thousands of dollars in prize money. The commentators were also fired, as well. The company claims that he violated the 2019 Hearthstone Grandmasters Official Competition Rules Section 6.1, which states:

Engaging in any act that, in Blizzard’s sole discretion, brings you into public disrepute, offends a portion or group of the public, or otherwise damages Blizzard image will result in removal from Grandmasters and reduction of the player’s prize total to $0 USD, in addition to other remedies which may be provided for under the Handbook and Blizzard’s Website Terms.

Blizzard is the latest global company to come down on someone who spoke on in support of Hong Kon protestors. China has stopped doing business with the NBA for now following a Tweet from Houston Rockets’ general manager Daryl Morey. The league, as well as Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta, immediately distanced itself from Morey’s statement. The damage has already been done with Chinese companies like Li-Ning and Ten Percent, a leading internet and cable provider in China pulling sponsorships from the team.

The decision has not sat well with the gaming community who have threatened to boycott the game until Blizzard reinstates Blitzchung. They are also calling out the game company for being on the wrong side of history in the matter by opting to choose profit over human rights.

You can see the reactions to Blizzard’s decision in the gallery below.

Level Up: Johanna Faries Named Commissioner of ‘Call of Duty’ Esports

Johanna Faries Is The New Commissioner of 'Call of Duty' Esports

Source: Richard Bord / Getty

Activision Blizzard took a significant step in the right direction. The video game studio behind popular titles such as Call of Duty and Overwatch announced it has appointed Johanna Faries as the Commissioner of Call of Duty Esports.

Fresh off being named as one of the 30 Most Powerful Women in Sports with the likes of Alex Morgan and Alexys Feaster, as well as one of FORTUNE’s 40 Under 40 Faries is quickly becoming one of the most influential women in sports. As part of her new position, she will oversee the recently announced Call of Duty League (CDL) which revealed has seven franchises ready to go WISE Ventures owns Minnesota, Immortals Gaming Club owns Los Angeles, Atlanta Esports Ventures owns Atlanta, Envy Gaming owns Dallas, Sterling.VC owns New York, c0ntact Gaming owns Paris, and OverActive Media owns Toronto.

As part of the announcement, Fairies spoke on her new role with Activision Games Blog:

“During my initial phase on the job, my team’s focus was really on setting a new product vision for Call of Duty as a city-based franchised league and to design an experience that we believe can grow to become one of the biggest sports leagues on the planet. Now that we have begun to sell franchises to ownership groups all over the world, it’s less about going from a white sheet of paper to what we have shaped now, and more about operating and managing this competitive ecosystem in a best-in-class way.”

“That’s not to say we aren’t still editing – I think every sports league is always in ‘edit’ phase even decades in! But now that we have a strong product vision and business model to share, and have sold in several team franchises in the process, we can now shift gears toward the planning and execution phase of our work. The role of Commissioner oversees all aspects of those dynamics and the key stakeholders involved in making the system go, so it’s a broader platform for management than where we were back in August when the focus was primarily internal-facing and design-driven.”

Faries is no stranger to the sports world, she previously worked for the NFL for 12 years and was responsible for business development, sponsorship and sales, consumer products and retail marketing, and fan development. She later joined the Activision Blizzard as Head of Call of Duty Esports before her level up to Commissioner of the CDL. Big congrats are in order we are looking forward to seeing where she takes the young league.

Bungie Says Deuces To Activision & Keeps ‘Destiny’, Employees Pop Champagne

Bungie Splits From Activision, Will Keep Destiny

Source: Randy Shropshire / Getty

The rocky relationship between Destiny developer Bungie and publisher Activision is over. In a shocking turn of events, the studio announced the split and that it will be keeping the game.

The divorce between the two was years in the making, and it existed long before the first game hit shelves. Bungie broke the news to its employees during a team meeting describing the split as fantastic news. Bungie’s employees who have grown tired of having to deal with Activision celebrated the news by popping champagne according to one person in attendance.

In a blog post, Bungie had this to say about the split:

“We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny, Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects.”

Since its launch back in September 2014, Destiny’s introduction to the video world has been a rocky one because of its slow roll-out of content in the form of updates and expansions. Bungie’ most recent release Destiny 2: The Forsaken has been well received by fans but failed to meet Activision’s sales expectations.

With its newly gained freedom, Bungie is looking forward to a much better future for the game due to no longer being constrained to Activision’s annualized schedule.

“We’ll continue to deliver on the existing Destiny roadmap, and we’re looking forward to releasing more seasonal experiences in the coming months, as well as surprising our community with some exciting announcements about what lies beyond.”

Bungie also has a new game coming very soon as well thanks to a $100 million investment from NetEase. Activision stated via its Twitter account that Destiny 2 will remain on Blizzards Battle.Net.

We are looking forward to what Bungie has in store for Destiny 2.

A blast from Call of Duty’s past in the form of the Nuketown map is making its triumphant return and should make fans of the mega-popular first-person shooter very happy.

PS4 owners, you’re up first.

The trailer also hints at combatants being able to possibly launch the nuclear missile that rests underneath the town. The map looks absolutely gorgeous and better than ever and it seems like it will become a favorite of Black Ops 4 players instantly.
