Woodstock 50 Has Officially Been Canceled

Even though we had high hopes for Woodstock 50, it now looks like the often-delayed, plague-ridden music festival that was supposed to go down in just a few weeks has officially been called off.

Variety is reporting that multiple sources have confirmed the news, with many of the vendors and stakeholders being informed of the cancellation as of this morning. There’s also an official statement that was released that tries to explain how the 50th anniversary celebration made a turn for the worse.

Read the official statement from Woodstock co-founder Michael Lang below:

“We are saddened that a series of unforeseen setbacks has made it impossible to put on the Festival we imagined with the great line-up we had booked and the social engagement we were anticipating. When we lost the Glen and then Vernon Downs we looked for a way to do some good rather than just cancel. We formed a collaboration with HeadCount to do a smaller event at the Merriweather Pavilion to raise funds for them to get out the vote and for certain NGOs involved in fighting climate change. We released all the talent so any involvement on their part would be voluntary. Due to conflicting radius issues in the DC area many acts were unable to participate and others passed for their own reasons. I would like to encourage artists and agents, who all have been fully paid, to donate 10% of their fees to HeadCount or causes of their choice in the spirit of peace. Woodstock remains committed to social change and will continue to be active in support of HeadCount’s critical mission to get out the vote before the next election. We thank the artists, fans and partners who stood by us even in the face of adversity. My thoughts turn to Bethel and its celebration of our 50th Anniversary to reinforce the values of compassion, human dignity, and the beauty of our differences embraced by Woodstock.”

— Michael Lang, Woodstock co-founder

After losing major headliners, including JAY-Z and most recently Miley Cyrus, the music festival organizers were still hoping to put on a show at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Baltimore for Aug. 16 to 18, even going so far as to make it free to attend. Hopefully they can find a way to honor the Woodstock legacy because it truly does hold huge significance in music history.

Woodstock 50 Will Reportedly Be Free of Charge

While initially sounding good on paper, the planned Woodstock 50 music festival has been going through a never-ending cycle of ill-fated delays. Following a venue change, unconfirmed performers and headliner JAY-Z pulling out just a few days ago, there looks to be some light at the end of the tunnel now that reports are saying the three-day event will be 100% free to attend.

TMZ reports that Woodstock 50 will release tickets for free, albeit in limited quantities and with a suggested donation disclaimer. The venue is reportedly now being moved to Maryland as well (sorry New York!) and there will also be specific instructions on how to get your hands on the free tix that will be revealed by the end of this week. VIP tickets will also be available so the event can actually, you know, make some money. The 50th anniversary celebration is just a little over two weeks away, and with no big headliner on the bill, plus the scheduled performers of the original planned event reportedly not tied to their contracts due to all the last minute changes, we just hope this event can still happen in some capacity to honor the historic 1969 festival that’s still considered to be a prominent memory in music history today.

Stay updated on the most accurate information by heading to the Woodstock 50 official site. Fingers crossed!

Woodstock 50 Relocated from New York to Maryland in Effort to Save Festival

The Woodstock 50 festival has gone through enough issues that the wise decision would appear to be a cancellation. However, the revival of the legendary festival is still being attempted by moving the from upstate New York to Columbia, Maryland.

Festival organizers confirm to the New York Times the relocation to the Merriweather Post Pavilion for the weekend of August 16. The location is an hour outside of Washington D.C. and a total of four and a half hours from the original location in Bethel, New York.

“When we heard that there was an opportunity to save this festival and bring a piece of American history to our community this summer, we jumped at the chance,” Calvin Ball, an executive with Howard County, Maryland, wrote to Greg Peck, one of the Woodstock organizers. “Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia is a jewel of Howard County and one of the top music venues in the nation. It felt like such a natural fit to host a historic festival on our storied stage.”

The original festival was scheduled to be headlined by JAY-Z, however, Rolling Stone has confirmed he will not be apart of the festival that has been renamed Woodstock 50 Washington.

Previous hurdles for the Woodstock returned included a push back of sales, a cancellation by the original investor and a pull out by the original venue location.

Representatives for Woodstock 50 Issue a Statement of Festival Cancellation

The revival of Woodstock in the Woodstock 50 festival this summer was supposed to have a heavy Hip-Hop presence with headliners in JAY-Z and Chance the Rapper, but now it has been canceled.

Earlier Monday (April 29), officials from Dentsu Aegis Network, which was providing the funding for the festival released a statement to Billboard canceling the summer date.

“It’s a dream for agencies to work with iconic brands and to be associated with meaningful movements. We have a strong history of producing experiences that bring people together around common interests and causes which is why we chose to be a part of the Woodstock 50th Anniversary Festival. But despite our tremendous investment of time, effort and commitment, we don’t believe the production of the festival can be executed as an event worthy of the Woodstock Brand name while also ensuring the health and safety of the artists, partners and attendees.”

The festival was set to be a three-day extravaganza which would also include performances from Miley Cyrus, The Killers, and original artists from the 1969 line-up.

The statement would also state, “As a result and after careful consideration, Dentsu Aegis Network’s Amplifi Live, a partner of Woodstock 50, has decided to cancel the festival. As difficult as it is, we believe this is the most prudent decision for all parties involved.”

Woodstock 50 was set to happen August 16-18 but had already missed the deadline to start selling tickets, in addition to various concerns about the capacity of the venue, permits, financing and more. Unfortunately for investors, most of the artists that were scheduled to perform were already paid, an amount that totaled over $30 million.

Woodstock Co-Founder Defends Having Hip Hop Artists at 50th Anniversary

Woodstock joined forces with JAY-Z, Chance The Rapper, and Common to help them celebrate their 50th anniversary and open the festival to a new audience. But apparently the line-up was met with opposition by festival purist and the co-founder, Michael Lang, isn’t here for it.

Lang stands his ground in the TMZ interview above pointing out that the original Woodstock festival in 1969 was made to attract young audiences.

“It’s not something we’re planning on doing every year, the 50th is a special anniversary,” Lang explains. “We’re hoping to engage people in social discourse and give them an incredible weekend, one that they’ll hopefully remember for the rest of their lives.”

The 50th-anniversary line-up was recently revealed and included a range of acts including Janelle Monae, Earl Sweatshirt, Vince Staples and more. In the past, DMX, Salt-N-Peppa, and NWA all graced the stage.

Jay-Z, Janelle Monae, Chance The Rapper Headline Woodstock 50

On Tuesday night, organizers released the lineup for Woodstock 50 and it’s one for the ages. The eclectic lineup features JAY-Z, Change the Rapper, Vince Staples, Miley Cyrus, Halsey, Run the Jewels, Janelle Monáe, Princess Nokia, Common and many more.

Michael Lang, the co-founder of the original 1969 festival, spoke to Billboard about the combing multiple genres for the 50th anniversary. “The lineup will be a mix of some of the old bands who are still performing and a lot of new headline talent,” said Lang. “Probably more than any other festival’s ever had. It’ll cross genres from rock to pop, folk and hip hop. It’s kind of representative of this idea of engagement and trying to steer toward acts that are heavily involved in social issues. So there’s some real gravitas in the performance and we want it to live on beyond the event.”

The lineup will also include artists who appeared at the 1969 Woodstock such as talking Santana, David Crosby, John Fogerty, Canned Heat, as well as members of Dead & Co. The performances will take place on three stages: the Peace Stage, Love Stage, and Music Stage—names that nod to the original music fest, which featured legendary artists like Jimi Hendrix, Sly and The Family Stone, Jefferson Airplane, the Who, and Janis Joplin.

Woodstock was a music festival held on a dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains, northwest of New York City, on the dates of August 15–18, 1969. The festival reportedly attracted an audience of more than 400,000 participants.

Billed as “An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music,” it was held at Max Yasgur’s 600-acre dairy farm near White Lake in Bethel, New York, 43 miles southwest of Woodstock.

In spite of torrential rain pouring all throughout the weekend, 32 acts performed outdoors. Woodstock is still widely regarded as a vital moment in popular music history, as well as the definitive event that represented counterculture generation.

Woodstock 50 tickets will go on sale April 22. To find out more information, go to the festival’s official website.

JAY-Z & Chance The Rapper Set To Headline Woodstock 50 Music Festival

Music mogul JAY-Z and Chance The Rapper are set to make summer even hotter. The duo are expected to headline the upcoming Woodstock 50 festival in New York State.

According to reports, Young Hov, Chance and a few other artists are going to dominate the mid-August event.

Jay-Z, Dead & Co., Black Keys and Chance the Rapper are among the headliners — with two out of three nights speaking to hip-hop’s dominance 50 years after the 1969 event. Also slated to take part in the festival (all subject to change before anything is made official): The Raconteurs, Imagine Dragons, Run the Jewels, Gary Clark Jr., Cage the Elephant, the Killers, Greta Van Fleet, Margo Price, Sturgill Simpson, Portugal the Man, Dawes, the Lumineers, Bishop Briggs, Pussy Riot, Courtney Barnett and Dorothy. Halsey, Miley Cyrus, Janelle Monae and Kacey Musgraves are also said to be finalizing their commitments. (Variety)

This week, reports emerged about artists getting paid to perform at the Watkins Glen, New York multi-day festival.

Sources tell Billboard that payment had gone out a few days later than orginally planned as financial backer Dentsu, a Japanese advertisting congolmerate, worked through attendance issues at the site in upstate New York. Woodstock 50 is expected to draw 100,000 fans for the event produced by Michael Lang, co-founder of the original 1969 Woodstock festival and co-owner of Woodstock Ventures, which manages the iconic festival’s intellectual property. Barring any changes, the highly-anticipated event will go down August 16.
