One of Hip-Hop’s brightest minds is about to take his talents to Hollywood. Questlove has been enlisted to oversee a film project about a cultural festival you should be familiar with.

HipHopDX is reporting that the Philadelphia native has signed on to oversee the making of Black Woodstock. This film will detail the inner workings of the festival held in the historic community of Harlem in 1969. The likes of Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder and Mahalia Jackson all performed to a crowd of over 300,000 attendees. According to early research this should be considered historic as this event was also hosted the same year as Woodstock but with far less promotion.

The Legendary Roots Crew member took to Twitter to confirm his role.

Black Woodstock will feature over 40 hours of original footage shot by the late great Hal Tulchin. Ahmir shared his enthusiasm via a formal press release. “I am truly excited to help bring the passion, the story and the music of the Harlem Cultural Festival to audiences around the world,” he revealed. “The performances are extraordinary. I was stunned when I saw the lost footage for the first time. It’s incredible to look at 50 years of history that’s never been told, and I’m eager and humbled to tell that story.”

The Harlem Cultural Festival was a series of music concerts to celebrate African American culture and to promote the continued politics of black pride. Along with this film Questlove is also directing a Broadway musical adaptation of Soul Train.

Woodstock 50 Is Officially Canceled

Woodstock 50

Source: press handout / Woodstock 50

That took long enough. Woodstock 50, the troubled music festival that was supposed to honor the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, has officially been canceled.

According to Variety, on the morning of July 31, vendors and stakeholders were notified music festival isn’t happening. The writing had been on the wall for weeks, with recently Jay-Z announcing he would no longer be performing. Others acts that bailed included Dead & Co., Santana,  Miley Cyrus, Raconteurs and the Lumineer.

Woodstock 50 was originally supposed to go down August 16 to August 18, in Watkins Glen, NY. However, the venue pulled out in April and afteer a location in NY wasn’t feasible, organizers announced it was going to happen at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland.

“We are saddened that a series of unforeseen setbacks has made it impossible to put on the Festival we imagined with the great line-up we had booked and the social engagement we were anticipating,” said Michael Lang, co-founder of Woodstock, via a press statement.

Lang also encouraged artists donate 10% of their booking fees to HeadCount, a non-profit organization that promotes voter registration, or other causes that promote peace

Woodstock 50 Has Officially Been Canceled

Even though we had high hopes for Woodstock 50, it now looks like the often-delayed, plague-ridden music festival that was supposed to go down in just a few weeks has officially been called off.

Variety is reporting that multiple sources have confirmed the news, with many of the vendors and stakeholders being informed of the cancellation as of this morning. There’s also an official statement that was released that tries to explain how the 50th anniversary celebration made a turn for the worse.

Read the official statement from Woodstock co-founder Michael Lang below:

“We are saddened that a series of unforeseen setbacks has made it impossible to put on the Festival we imagined with the great line-up we had booked and the social engagement we were anticipating. When we lost the Glen and then Vernon Downs we looked for a way to do some good rather than just cancel. We formed a collaboration with HeadCount to do a smaller event at the Merriweather Pavilion to raise funds for them to get out the vote and for certain NGOs involved in fighting climate change. We released all the talent so any involvement on their part would be voluntary. Due to conflicting radius issues in the DC area many acts were unable to participate and others passed for their own reasons. I would like to encourage artists and agents, who all have been fully paid, to donate 10% of their fees to HeadCount or causes of their choice in the spirit of peace. Woodstock remains committed to social change and will continue to be active in support of HeadCount’s critical mission to get out the vote before the next election. We thank the artists, fans and partners who stood by us even in the face of adversity. My thoughts turn to Bethel and its celebration of our 50th Anniversary to reinforce the values of compassion, human dignity, and the beauty of our differences embraced by Woodstock.”

— Michael Lang, Woodstock co-founder

After losing major headliners, including JAY-Z and most recently Miley Cyrus, the music festival organizers were still hoping to put on a show at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Baltimore for Aug. 16 to 18, even going so far as to make it free to attend. Hopefully they can find a way to honor the Woodstock legacy because it truly does hold huge significance in music history.

Woodstock 50 Will Reportedly Be Free of Charge

While initially sounding good on paper, the planned Woodstock 50 music festival has been going through a never-ending cycle of ill-fated delays. Following a venue change, unconfirmed performers and headliner JAY-Z pulling out just a few days ago, there looks to be some light at the end of the tunnel now that reports are saying the three-day event will be 100% free to attend.

TMZ reports that Woodstock 50 will release tickets for free, albeit in limited quantities and with a suggested donation disclaimer. The venue is reportedly now being moved to Maryland as well (sorry New York!) and there will also be specific instructions on how to get your hands on the free tix that will be revealed by the end of this week. VIP tickets will also be available so the event can actually, you know, make some money. The 50th anniversary celebration is just a little over two weeks away, and with no big headliner on the bill, plus the scheduled performers of the original planned event reportedly not tied to their contracts due to all the last minute changes, we just hope this event can still happen in some capacity to honor the historic 1969 festival that’s still considered to be a prominent memory in music history today.

Stay updated on the most accurate information by heading to the Woodstock 50 official site. Fingers crossed!

Representatives for Woodstock 50 Issue a Statement of Festival Cancellation

The revival of Woodstock in the Woodstock 50 festival this summer was supposed to have a heavy Hip-Hop presence with headliners in JAY-Z and Chance the Rapper, but now it has been canceled.

Earlier Monday (April 29), officials from Dentsu Aegis Network, which was providing the funding for the festival released a statement to Billboard canceling the summer date.

“It’s a dream for agencies to work with iconic brands and to be associated with meaningful movements. We have a strong history of producing experiences that bring people together around common interests and causes which is why we chose to be a part of the Woodstock 50th Anniversary Festival. But despite our tremendous investment of time, effort and commitment, we don’t believe the production of the festival can be executed as an event worthy of the Woodstock Brand name while also ensuring the health and safety of the artists, partners and attendees.”

The festival was set to be a three-day extravaganza which would also include performances from Miley Cyrus, The Killers, and original artists from the 1969 line-up.

The statement would also state, “As a result and after careful consideration, Dentsu Aegis Network’s Amplifi Live, a partner of Woodstock 50, has decided to cancel the festival. As difficult as it is, we believe this is the most prudent decision for all parties involved.”

Woodstock 50 was set to happen August 16-18 but had already missed the deadline to start selling tickets, in addition to various concerns about the capacity of the venue, permits, financing and more. Unfortunately for investors, most of the artists that were scheduled to perform were already paid, an amount that totaled over $30 million.

Which Is It? Woodstock Festival Off and On

SOMETHING IN THE WATER - Day 2

Today, the investors in the new Woodstock Festival said it was off. However, the promoters say it’s still on.

Just about everyone else is confused.

First, earlier today (April 29), Billboard reported that the three-day Woodstock Festival’s organizers had decided to cancel the event.

Officials from Dentsu Aegis Network, the event’s sponsor, told Billboard:

“It’s a dream for agencies to work with iconic brands and to be associated with meaningful movements. We have a strong history of producing experiences that bring people together around common interests and causes which is why we chose to be a part of the Woodstock 50th Anniversary Festival.  But despite our tremendous investment of time, effort and commitment, we don’t believe the production of the festival can be executed as an event worthy of the Woodstock Brand name while also ensuring the health and safety of the artists, partners and attendees.”

They added,  “As a result and after careful consideration, Dentsu Aegis Network’s Amplifi Live, a partner of Woodstock 50, has decided to cancel the festival.  As difficult as it is, we believe this is the most prudent decision for all parties involved.”

This is a major setback considering some the headliners included Jay-Z, Chance The Rapper, the Killers and Imagine Dragons.

However, shortly thereafter, the Woodstock Festivals promoters said it was still on.

“Woodstock 50 vehemently denies the festival’s cancellation and legal remedy will (be) sought,” read a statement from Woodstock 50 promoters, as reported by the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Woodstock 50 was (is?) scheduled to go down Aug. 16 to Aug. 18 in Watkins Glen, Schuyler County in New York. However, the County Administrator reportedly received notice of its cancellation.

It goes without saying that rumblings of the Fyre Festival debacle and potential similarities to that well-documented clusterf*ck have already started.
