Today in Hip-Hop History: The Firm Released ‘The Album’ 27 Years Ago

On this day in Hip-Hop History, New York-based supergroup The Firm released the sole studio album, The Album. As a collaborative effort made by Nas, Aftermath label-head Dr. Dre and marketing genius Steve Stoute, The Album was designed to boost the commercial and mainstream appeal of four of New York’s most prolific emcees: Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ, and Cormega (unfortunately Cormega and the rest of those involved never saw eye-to-eye and he was swiftly replaced by Queensbridge Nature prior to finishing The Album).

Around the time of the group’s formation, its future members were at a pivotal moment in their careers. Nas, who had recently released his prolific debut Illmatic, was not receiving his due respect as one of the greatest active rappers of the time. Of course, he was in great standing with the actual rap community (he was the first non-Wu Tang member to appear on a Wu-Tang track), his fame among the public was disproportional. This disparity forced Nas to hire Stoute as his manager in an attempt to change his commercial approach.

Ironically, this was the second collaborative project of East Coast and West Coast artists involved in the coastal beef of that era. The first being the late Tupac Shakur and the Boot Camp Clik’s 1996 One Nation project.

Simultaneously, Foxy Brown, AZ, and Cormega were all experience a momentous rise in success. Foxy Brown’s work from 1995 with Jay-Z’s hit “Ain’t No Nig*a” in 1996 lead to her becoming one of the most coveted female emcees in New York. Her popularity in the industry led to a bidding war for her contract, won by Def Jam Recordings. AZ was coming off the success of his 1995 debut LP Doe or Die and Cormega was just released from serving a bid in prison. It would seem that the stars had aligned so that this project could take place.

This first time the quartet appeared on a single was Nas’ “Affirmative Action” on his sophomore LP It Was Written. The group’s chemistry and the single’s critical and commercial success made coming together as a supergroup a no-brainer for all involved.

Both the group’s name and the title of the album are an illustration of the 1991 John Grisham legal-thriller novel The Firm

Commercially, the endeavor as a whole was a mass success. The Album debuted at #1 on both the Billboard 200 chart and Top R&B/Hip Hop chart. It sold 147,000 copies in its first week and went on to sell 925,000 in the United States. The record also had international success charting in Canada (where it sold 50,000 units), France, and the Netherlands.

Happy Birthday To The Firm’s AZ!

Screen Shot 2023 03 09 at 9.39.42 AM

On this date in 1972, Anthony “AZ” Cruz was born in Brooklyn, New York. Cruz, who became known as AZ as a shortened way to say Asiatic, his righteous attribute from the 5% Nation.

AZ was first heard on Nas’ iconic Illmatic LP on the L.E.S. produced “Life’s A Bitch”. AZ’s verse was so transformative, it landed him a deal with EMI Records in 1994. His first LP, Doe Or Die, earned the street savvy East New Yorker a gold plaque, lead by the infectious single “Sugar Hill” featuring Miss Jones. AZ was also a major part of the legendary collective The Firm, which included Nas, Nature, Foxy Brown and was produced exclusively by Dr. Dre.

Just a couple of years following the commemoration of Doe Or Die 2, which was issued on the 25th anniversary of the original Doe Or Die, AZ says that there is still a possibility of a joint album with him and Nas.

Until then, happy 51st degree day to the God!

New Nas Album “King’s Disease” Drops Tomorrow

Nas’ highly eagerly anticipated new twelfth solo studio album titled “King’s Disease” is set to drop tomorrow Friday, 21 August on Mass Appeal Records and Def Jam Recordings. The 13-track album is entirely produced by Hit-Boy and features the lead single ‘Ultra Black’ which dropped a few days ago. That single drop received wide praise as well as a lot of commentary around his Doja Cat diss, following resurfaced video of the Doja in Alt-Right group chats as well as old music from her that coded racist language familiar to Alt-Right racists on the dark web. The new Nas release is set to contain a range of diverse features, including Big Sean, Lil Durk, Anderson .Paak, Brucie B, Charlie Wilson, Don Toliver, Hit-Boy himself also on the mic, Fivio Foreign, A$AP FERG as well as a resembling the original line-up of The Firm which never came to full complete fruition (AZ, Foxy Brown, and most notably Cormega).

The coming together of the original line-up of The Firm (Nature out for Cormega) some 20 years later on track 11 in the appropriately ‘Full Circle’ will immediately raise eyebrows for many hip hop fans, and appears long in the works with Nas and legendary fellow Queensbridge Cormega long squashing their beef near 15 years ago. It will be well-received, particularly by East Coast and 90s/2000s hip hop fans, with Cormega having himself dropped a handful of classic albums since The Firm issues of the mid-90s and the culture long wanting them to reappear on music together. Interestingly the final track titled ‘Spicy’ featuring Fivio Foreign and A$AP FERG is listed as a bonus track, opening the door up for potential multiple format releases across regions and future deluxe editions too.

King’s Disease will be Nas’ first solo studio album since his 7-track release that dropped back in June 2018 which was produced by Kanye West, admittingly to mixed reviews in what some felt was a bit rushed and short for a Nas drop. With this new album entirely produced by Hit-Boy as well as being executively produced by both Hit-Boy and Nas together, fans can expect a very traditional sounding album flowing seamlessly from front to back, ultimately with Hit-Boy’s modern twist coupled with Nas’ classic style. Pre-orders are out now for the midnight drop tonight from undoubtedly one of the greatest rappers to ever grace the microphone yet – N A S.

Happy 48th Birthday To Brooklyn Rap Legend AZ!

On this date in 1972, AZ was born Antonio Cruz in Brooklyn, New York. AZ is regarded as one of the most prolific emcees of the 90s, even though his entrance into the game came from just one verse on Nas’ “Life’s A Bitch” from the epic Illmatic album.

That one verse led to an album deal with EMI Records, who released his critically acclaimed Do Or Die album in 1995. He was later chosen as one of the four emcees that would eventually form The Firm, a legendary four-person crew that included Nas, Foxy Brown, Nature and AZ, but Nature’s position was originally filled by Queensbridge’s Cormega. The Firm’s solitary album, which was produced entirely by Dr. Dre, is recognized as one of Hip Hop’s most coveted albums because of its East Coast/West Coast combination during the height of the East Coast/West Coast rap rivalry. AZ went on to put out eight more solo albums, with Do Or Die 2 expected later this year.

Happy 48th Born day to AZ from The Source Magazine, wishing him many more in the future!

Nas & Rick Ross Team Up To Deliver Another Chin Check (Audio)

Throughout the last dozen years, Nas and Rick Ross have collaborated many times, usually on Rozay’s albums. The South Florida rapper is clearly inspired by Nas—an artist whose many gifts include detailed imagery, and a knack for blending street exploits with quote-worthy wisdom.

Fresh off of last year’s stellar “Powers That Be” from Ross’ Rather You Than Me, one of music’s hottest producers brings the two entities back together. Mike WiLL Made It is at the helm for the just-released Creed II soundtrack. The Eardruma Records compilation includes appearances from Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, ScHoolboy Q, Lil Wayne, Vince Staples, and countless others. Following Black Panther soundtrack at the top of the year, another Interscope Records flagship artist is working to make music companions to films feel like an event again, especially in Rap.

Nas Demands A Second Look At His Album With A Stunning Short Film (Video)

Nas and Ross’ “Check” measures up as a highlight. The song plays into the training, fighting, and competitive themes of the film. The chorus sees Nas spitting, “Yo, you ain’t standin’ on your word, you lose respect / Man up, check, chest out, check / Chin up, check, discipline, check.” The Queens legend begins his verse, “Picture what your opponent is thinking inside the square / This is like chess, strategize in the ring / He try’na be a father, but he lost his father to the same thing,” before getting to, “Try to take my last breath, my air, had to check my fear / That’s why they respect Nasir, feel me? / Y’all witnessin’ what you never seen / Needin’ nothing attracts everything, the resurrection of a king.

On his part, Double-R drips trademark couplets such as “Born to be a boss, so nail me to the holy cross.” In looking at his own rise to power in the mid-2000s, Rick revisits decisions made and avoiding pitfalls. Making it in Rap and standing in the boxing ring can be a lot alike. The production, from Mike WiLL and Blue Cheeze, differ from a lot of the hit-maker’s usual stuff. Ross compares the songs to Quentin Tarantino (presumably alluding to Kill Bill) with a song that has Wild West gun-fighting vibes. The strings come in on the important lines too, adding that extra touch.

9th Wonder Brings Smif-n-Wessun & Rick Ross Together For A Song That’s Super Fly (Audio)

Yesterday (November 15), Nas released a short film to his 2018 album, NASIR.
