Holla If You Hear Me: Joaquin Phoenix Calls Out Systemic Racism In The Film Industry at BAFTA Awards

EE British Academy Film Awards 2020 - Red Carpet Arrivals

Joaquin Phoenix may have dominated the screen while playing role of the Joker, but when it comes to stepping up and being an ally to people of color facing inequality, he’s nothing but serious.

On Sunday (Feb. 2) while on stage accepting his BAFTA award for Best Actor for his role in Joker, Joaquin Phoenix took the time to call out the others and himself for the lack of diversity and not doing more to make sure people of color felt not only welcomed but fairly represented.

“I feel conflicted because so many of my fellow actors that are deserving don’t have that same privilege. I think we send a very clear message to people of color that you’re not welcome here,” Phoenix said. “I think that’s the message that we’re sending to people that have contributed so much to our medium and our industry and in ways that we benefit from.”

Phoenix’s speech comes just one month after BAFTA faced controversy once again for lack of diversity and inclusion after female filmmakers weren’t included in the Best Director slot nor actors of color in the remaining categories. Harriet actress Cynthia Ervio (who is nominated for an Oscar) was shut out of the nominations but was asked to perform.

“I don’t think anybody wants a handout or preferential treatment, people just want to be acknowledged, appreciated and respected for their work,” Phoenix continued. “This is not a self-righteous condemnation. I’m part of the problem. I have not done everything in my power to ensure that the sets I was on are inclusive. But I think it’s more than just having sets that are multi-cultural. We have to really do the hard work to truly understand systemic racism.”

Although you can tell it was mildly uncomfortable for Phoenix to address in a room full of his peers, thespians of color took to social media to show their support in his decision, including Viola Davis, Kerry Washington, and director Lulu Wang.

While many in the room looked uncomfortable, Joaquin Phoenix seemingly appeared unbothered as a he did a proverbial mic drop before exiting the stage. Although Phoenix’s speech was powerful, it will be nice to see if Hollywood will finally take heed.

Jennifer Lopez & Shakira Raise Awareness of Social Injustice During Super Bowl Halftime Show, MAGA Twitter Livid

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira may have shut down Halftime during the Super Bowl, but their amazing performances was no match for the blatant racism and criticism of MAGA Twitter.

On Sunday (Feb. 2) the duo took the stage delivering a powerful and culture filled performances which included a medley of their hits, a performance by rapper Bad Bunny, and also a poignant message regarding the social injustices that are effecting the Latinx community.

As J. Lo was finishing her “Dance Again” hit, Hard Rock Stadium turned dark –– only to be brightened by her daughter Emme and other children who were caged in neon structures. While moving out of the cage, Emme began to sing the opening lyrics of “Let’s Get Loud” and cameras focused on kids with sweaters that had U.S. flags on them.

Many on social media believed it was a call for attention to Trump’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy, which split up hundreds of parents and children at the border; while the American flags and J. Lo singing Bruce Springsteen’s classic hit “Born in the USA” before donning a Puerto Rican flag cape points to J. Lo shining a light on the deplorable condition that Trump and his administration has left Puerto Rico (which is part of the United States) in after continued natural disasters devastation.https://twitter.com/DavidBegnaud/status/1224411004714586113?s=20

Back in December, Puerto Rico was hit with a 4.7 magnitude earthquake, kicking off a series of seismic events on the island, with more than 2,000 tremors occurring since the original quake; leaving the island’s three million people in fear, and wanting for aid.

Either way, MAGA Twitter was not happy, taking to social media to broadcast their hate and clear ignorance.

Despite the ignorance being spewed, the messages being conveyed were loud and clear and the fact that two women of color over the age of 40 are still able to not only command a stage but dominate entire conversations proves that the choice to perform was a calculated risk that paid off.

“The Super Bowl is a very American event, as American as it can get,” Shakira said during Thursday’s NFL-sponsored press conference. “It’s also going to be a reminder of the heritage of this country, which is one of diversity.”

Check out the amazing performance and some of the reactions below.
