Joaquin Phoenix may have dominated the screen while playing role of the Joker, but when it comes to stepping up and being an ally to people of color facing inequality, he’s nothing but serious.

On Sunday (Feb. 2) while on stage accepting his BAFTA award for Best Actor for his role in Joker, Joaquin Phoenix took the time to call out the others and himself for the lack of diversity and not doing more to make sure people of color felt not only welcomed but fairly represented.

“I feel conflicted because so many of my fellow actors that are deserving don’t have that same privilege. I think we send a very clear message to people of color that you’re not welcome here,” Phoenix said. “I think that’s the message that we’re sending to people that have contributed so much to our medium and our industry and in ways that we benefit from.”

Phoenix’s speech comes just one month after BAFTA faced controversy once again for lack of diversity and inclusion after female filmmakers weren’t included in the Best Director slot nor actors of color in the remaining categories. Harriet actress Cynthia Ervio (who is nominated for an Oscar) was shut out of the nominations but was asked to perform.

“I don’t think anybody wants a handout or preferential treatment, people just want to be acknowledged, appreciated and respected for their work,” Phoenix continued. “This is not a self-righteous condemnation. I’m part of the problem. I have not done everything in my power to ensure that the sets I was on are inclusive. But I think it’s more than just having sets that are multi-cultural. We have to really do the hard work to truly understand systemic racism.”

Although you can tell it was mildly uncomfortable for Phoenix to address in a room full of his peers, thespians of color took to social media to show their support in his decision, including Viola Davis, Kerry Washington, and director Lulu Wang.

While many in the room looked uncomfortable, Joaquin Phoenix seemingly appeared unbothered as a he did a proverbial mic drop before exiting the stage. Although Phoenix’s speech was powerful, it will be nice to see if Hollywood will finally take heed.

Joaquin Phoenix Calls Out ‘Systematic Racism’ at 2020 BAFTA Awards

Joaquin Phoenix is receiving tons of praise from his Black counterparts for calling out “systematic racism” at the 2020 BAFTA Awards.

“I feel very honored and privileged to be here tonight. The Baftas have already been very supportive of my career and I’m deeply appreciative. But I have to say that I also feel conflicted because so many of my fellow actors that are deserving don’t have that same privilege,” Phoenix stated before addressing the elephant in the room. “I think that we send a very clear message to people of color that you’re not welcome here.”

The Joker star went on to say that he’s “ashamed” to be apart of the problem that he and his peers benefit from. “But I think it’s more than just having sets that are multi-cultural. We have to do really the hard work to truly understand systemic racism. I think it is the obligation of the people that have created and perpetuate and benefit from a system of oppression to be the ones that dismantle it. So that’s on us.”

Viola Davis, who won a Bafta award in 2017 for her role in Fences, thanked Phoenix for his “honesty, solidarity and courage”.

Kerry Washington thanked Joaquin Phoenix for spewing “FACTS in his BAFTA speech.”

Jared Leto Tried To Get Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Joker’ Film Deaded

Comic-Con International 2016 - Warner Bros. Presentation

Of all the Jokers we’ve gotten over the decades, from Cesar Romero’s rendition of the classic Batman villain in the 1960s. to more recently, Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime, Jared Leto’s depiction of the “hipster” Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad was easily the least memorable and most forgettable. Maybe that’s the reason Leto tried to put the kibosh on Todd Phillips’ critically acclaimed Joker before it could begin filming.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman felt “blindsided” when he learned that Warner Bros. was going to be granting Joaquin Phoenix his own Joker film and not only complained to his agents at CAA, but also tried to have his music manager, Irving Azoff, get in contact with Warner Bros. in an attempt to halt production of the film. Though Leto’s camp denies the allegations, Leto and Azoff have since parted ways.

It would make sense that Jared Leto would feel a way about the Todd Phillips-directed film as it was said he was promised his own standalone Joker film after he complained that a lot of the scenes he filmed for Suicide Squad were left on the cutting room floor. But before he could even muster up a script for his solo Joker adventure, Warner Bros. greenlit Todd Phillips’ vision starring Phoenix, and part of the reason they did so was because of Leto’s lackluster performance as Batman’s greatest villain.

From THR:

At this point, sources say Leto’s days as the Joker likely are over. He will not reprise the role for Warners’ upcoming DC movies Birds of Prey (a spinoff centered on Robbie’s Harley Quinn) or in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, due out in 2021. Says one person involved in the situation: “How do you play the Joker you established following [Phoenix]? It kind of ends his Joker run.”

He will not be missed (no shots).

Ultimately Todd Phillips’ Joker not only ended Leto’s days in white and red makeup but apparently it was enough to end his relationship with CAA as “the actor felt his agents should have told him about the Phillips project earlier and fought harder for his version of Joker. Sources say Leto told his agents that they should stop the rival project, arguing that he wasn’t being treated properly as an Oscar winner (for Dallas Buyers Club).” He’s since left CAA for WME.

Unfortunately for Joker fans though, all signs point to Todd Phillip’s new classic origin story will indeed be a one shot deal as he has no plans of doing a sequel nor does he intend on having Joaquin Phoenix pop up anywhere in the current DCEU. It makes sense as his Joker story takes place in 1981 while current Batman films take place in today’s day and age. So chances are if Robert Pattinson’s Batman does eventually run into the Clown Prince of Crime it will once again be played by another actor hoping to get an Oscar nod. It sure as hell doesn’t seem like it’ll be Jared Leto though.

Joaquin Phoenix As ‘Joker’ Screen Test Revealed, Twitter Debates

Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck in Joker

Source: Warner Bros. / Warner Bros.

Joaquin Phoenix is the Joker in the forthcoming origin film from Warner Bros. While we got a look at the actor on set this past weekend, today (Sept. 21), fans got blessed with a tease of the actor in full Joker makeup.

Phoenix stars the title role alongside Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro, while the film is directed, produced and co-written by the Oscar-nominated Todd Phillips.

The video shared by director Todd Philips is called a “camera test with sound” of the Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) character in the film. Described as “a man disregarded by society,” this is who will eventually become the Batman’s greatest and deadliest foe in a film that shows “not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale,” per Warner Bros.

Unless you’re already afraid of clowns, the look doesn’t exactly inspire fear. But it is just a “test” so we can’t be sure this is what the proper Joker will actually look like in the film. In the comics, the Joker’s natural skin tone is chalky white while his treacherous leer doesn’t require any makeup.

Now if ran into Phoenix walking down a dark street dressed like this, he is catching a proper fade, and we’ll ask questions later.

Joker is due in theaters October 4, 2019. Check out Twitter reactions to the reveal in the gallery.

Joaquin Phoenix As The Joker Revealed

Joaquin Phoenix

Source: photo: WENN

Joaquin Phoenix really is playing the Joker in an origin story and a first look at the actor as the iconic villain has been revealed. The film’s director, Todd Philipps, took to Instagram to reveal a pic of Batman’s first foe.

Don’t expect the evil grin and ghastly skin tone, though.

The pic is sunken-faced (no shots) looking Phoenix with the caption “Arthur.” We assume that’s the character’s real name in the flick before he becomes the Clown Prince of Crime.

The movie still doesn’t have a proper title, but it’s nevertheless due out October 4, 2019 via Warner Bros.

Color us intrigued. But you can’t have Joker without Batman, right? More footage of Phoenix in character on the flip.
