Happy 56th Birthday To N.W.A./Ruthless Records Founder Eazy-E! (RIP)

Screen Shot 2020 09 07 at 9.38.25 AM

Despite the fact that the Hip Hop community lost this giant in the game over two decades ago, the legacy of Eazy-E will always be seen, heard and celebrated by the culture of Hip Hop.

Eazy-E was born Eric Lynn Wright on this date in 1964 in Compton, California. As most of his gang-infested Compton neighborhood, Eazy adopted the street life and began a career in selling drugs in the early 80s. Wright earned as much as $250K selling drugs, but quickly reinvested his street profits into the music business, thus starting Ruthless Records.

Not long after, Eazy linked up with O’Shea “Ice Cube” Jackson, Andre “Dr. Dre” Young and Lorenzo “MC Ren” Paterson and founded “the world’s most dangerous group”, N.W.A. This multi-platinum, Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame group catapulted Eazy’s status to the “godfather of gangster rap”.

Even though the world said goodbye to Eazy in 1995 after his short battle with AIDS, his musical genius continues to live on and influence future generations of Hip Hoppers.

Happy born day Eazy! #RIPEazyE

Biggie’s Biggest Style Staples You Can Still Cop in 2019

R.I.P. to the one, the only, The Notorious B.I.G.

22 years have passed since Biggie was murdered on March 9, 1997 while leaving an afterparty for the 11th Annual Soul Train Music Awards in Los Angeles. That night, he hit the stage to perform a medley of his hits “One More Chance (Remix)” and the Junior M.A.F.I.A. posse cut “Get Money.” At no point could he have imagined that it would be his last time ever performing on a stage, or at all for that matter, but he sure went out looking extra dapper in a black tux and top hat to match. While it certainly was a memorable style moment for the bigger than life rap star, it was far from the only instance in his career where he kept it all the way fresh.

From photoshoots to the stage, and even on a classic cover of The Source Magazine, keep scrolling to see some of his most memorable fashion statements and how you can still cop those iconic looks today:

COOGIE SWEATERS

This one’s a given. There’s probably no other brand that B.I.G. is associated with as much as he is to COOGI. Whether for ugly sweater parties, a ’90s-themed kickback or just to stay cozy down to the socks, you can still pull this look off.

COOGI Classic Crewneck – $600 USD
Shop here: COOGI

KANGOL HATS

This was a popular hat during the 1990s that fit Biggie’s mafioso rap persona to a tee. As the 504 is just as iconic to the Kangol brand as B.I.G. is to Hip-Hop, it’ll always be a fashion statement that you can rock “on and on and on and…” just like his flow on “Nasty Boy.”

Kangol Wool 504 – $50 USD
Shop here: Kangol

BAPE

Of course the King of Brooklyn would be rocking one of the rarest BAPE pieces before the BAPE trend even made it big in America. The iconic Japanese streetwear retailer re-released this same jacket last season, so it’s clearly still a favorite amongst Ape Heads even after all these years.

A Bathing Ape GOTE-TEX 1st CAMO Snowboard Jacket – $1,000 USD
Shop here: StockX

VERSACE SHADES

BIG had such an impact on Versace that the luxury fashion house gave him the ultimate tribute by re-releasing the frames he made notoriously popular — they even named it the “Biggie Frame.”

Versace Havana Medusa Biggie Sunglasses – $295 USD
Shop here: Versace

TIMBERLAND BOOTS

Ok, so Biggie in no way started the Wheat Timbs movement, but it was definitely a rare occasion where he wasn’t rocking a fresh pair. We wonder how funny he would’ve though all these “NYC Timbs” memes are.

Timberland 6-Inch Premium Boot “Wheat” – $190 USD
Shop here: Timberland

HAWAIIAN SHIRTS

Image: Chris Walter/WireImage

Either he predicted the trend would be popular in the current menswear cycle — remember Pusha T in Prada last year? — or he was simply just always in summer mode. We’ll go with the latter, but BIG made these look fly then and even now.

PRADA Printed poplin shirt – $920 USD
Shop here: Prada

A CLASSIC SUIT

Straight off his last living appearance on the cover of The Source (Issue #91), Biggie went out on a truly classic note, and we’re proud to have this one in the vault. Nothing is more traditional than a two-piece suit, and given his larger-than-life persona and size alike, The Notorious B.I.G. rocked it just as well as he did with a mic. Forever missed; forever fly.

Vintage Plain Gray Tweed Suit – $220 USD
Shop here: Studio Suits

R.I.P to The Notorious B.I.G. Your memory will continue to live on through us and rap fans across the globe. Your style, well, that will simply never be duplicated.

5 Times Mac Miller Proved He Was A Sneakerhead In His Lyrics

Happy birthday, Mac Miller!

From the start of his career until the unfortunate end that took him from us just over four months ago on September 7, 2018, Mac Miller was always an avid sneakerhead. His breakout mixtape hit “Nikes On My Feet” is one of the best examples on wax that represents a love for rubber soles, and one of the best uses of a classic Nas sample too, might we add. It wasn’t rare to find the Pittsburgh-bred MC rocking a fresh pair of Vans on the regular, or even hit the stage in some of the freshest pair of Js. Simply put, Mac was one of the most famous faces out there that shared our collective kick obsession, so we had to remember the GRAMMY-nominated rapper on what would’ve been his 27th birthday in a way we hope he would’ve appreciated.

Keep scrolling to see 5 of our favorite rap lyrics by Mac Miller that reference his love for sneakers, and share a few of your own favorite bars by the fallen rapper over on our Facebook and Twitter:

5. “Knock Knock” – K.I.D.S. (2010)

“New kicks give me cushion like whoopie
Keep a smile like an Eat’n Park cookie
Everything good, I’m white boy awesome
Up all night – Johnny Carson”

4. “Life Ain’t Easy” – Best Day Ever (2011)

“When I get old I’m a be real cool
Sittin’ on the porch with a fresh pair of shoes
Whole bunch of stories for the neighborhood kids
Tell ’em to believe, they be makin’ it big”

3. “Conversation Pt 1” – Swimming (2018)

“Okay, why you always hatin’?
Lacin’ up my sneakers I be running out of patience
Yeah, it ain’t your money ’till you make it
Otherwise, it’s just a conversation”

2.”No” – Piffsburgh (2011)

“Hype like pom-poms, tied into some Long Johns
Finally some brand new gear that I got on
New shoes and some twenty dollar socks on
Me and my people stay connected like a dot com”

1. “Nikes On My Feet” – K.I.D.S. (2010)

“I make ’em so mad, they got no swag
Pippens on my feet — they the throwbacks”

R.I.P., young Mac. Keep swimming forever…

Happy Birthday Phife Dawg! (R.I.P.)

On this day in 1970, the second lyrical half of A Tribe Called Quest, Phife Dawg was born. Born Malik Isaac Taylor in Queens, New York, Phife is one fourth of one of the most influential groups in Hip Hop culture; A Tribe Called Quest. It’s been almost three years since Phife lost his battle with diabetes, however, his music will live on for eternity.

On many of ATCQ’s tracks, fans have always rightfully celebrated Q-Tip’s lyricism, but rarely gave Phife Dawg his proper due. In posthumous honor of his birthday, we have put together a list of his top five hottest verses to shine light on the unsung lyrical phenom that is Phife Dawg.

5. “Electric Relaxation” On this standout track from the album Midnight Marauders, Phife and The Abstract went toe to toe, trading off verse without a hook until the song ended, with standout bars like, “Let me hit it from the back, girl I won’t catch a hernia/Bust off on your couch, now you got Seaman’s Furniture..”and let’s not forget, “I like ‘em brown, yellow, Puerto Rican or Haitian/Name is Phife Dawg from the Zulu Nation..”

4. “La Schmoove” This was a featured verse from Phife Dawg on a track by Brooklyn rap tongue twisters Fu Schnickens. On this track, Phife had the third verse, yet opened it like it was his own song saying,

Now here I go, once again with the ill flow/Other MC’s that rap, their style is so-so..”

3. “Scenario” Being one of the most popular songs on A Tribe Called Quest’s Low End Theory album, Phife Dawg’s opening verse is one that rings in the ears of many rap fans.

“Ayo, Bo knows this, and Bo knows that/ But bo don’t know jack cause Bo can’t rap//Well what do you know, the Di-Dawg, is first up to bat/No batteries included and no strings attached.”

2. “Award Tour” Another cut from Midnight Marauders, Award Tour was a huge success for A Tribe Called Quest. It also houses some of Phife Dawg’s strongest metaphors.
“I have a quest to have a mic in my hand/without that, it’s like Kryptonite and Superman/So Shaheed come in with the sugar cuts//Phife Dawg’s my name, but on stage, call me Dynomut..t”

“So, next time that you think you want something here/Make something dope or take that garbage to St.Elsewhere..”

Phife Dawg spit two of the hardest verses on the album on this one record. “Yo microphone check one, two, what is this?/The five foot assassin with the roughneck business/I float like gravity, never had a cavity/Got more rhymes than the Winans got family..”

“You soar off to another world, deep in your mind/But people seem to take that, as being unkind/’Oh yo he’s acting stank,’ really on the regal?/a man of the fame not a man of the people/beleive that if you want but I tell you this much/riding on the train with no dough, sucks..”
