Hip Hop Veteran Ja Rule and Pencils of Promise Break Ground for School In Ghana

Yesterday marked a significant milestone in the journey towards global education as Hip Hop icon Ja Rule, in partnership with Pencils of Promise (PoP), spearheaded the Jeff and Aisha Atkins Groundbreaking Ceremony at the Nuaso Anglican Basic School in Ghana. This collaborative effort between Ja Rule (Jeffrey Atkins), his wife Aisha, and PoP showcases their shared commitment to supporting quality education for children worldwide.

The event, held in the Nuaso community in the Eastern region of Ghana, celebrated the groundbreaking of new school facilities aimed at providing safe and conducive learning environments for primary school students in grades K-6. The Nuaso region has long grappled with inadequate and unsafe learning conditions due to makeshift classrooms. In response, PoP and Ja Rule joined forces with the local government and community to initiate the construction of new school facilities, with the Nuaso community contributing through labor and materials.

The ceremony commenced with an opening prayer by religious leader Venerable Kofi Obeng Ofosu, followed by a warm welcome statement from Municipal Education Director Mr. Samuel K. Tettey. PoP CEO Kailee Scales delivered an inspiring speech, highlighting the organization’s global impact on education and its focus on collaborative community development and empowerment. Ja Rule expressed his personal commitment to the cause, emphasizing the importance of creating educational opportunities for children worldwide.

Ja Rule shared, “Giving back to any community, especially my Ghana family, is so important to me. I feel honored that I get to even be a part of a project like this and help students advance their education. I’m all about the kids and doing everything I can to make a difference in these communities. To my people at Pencils of Promise, I couldn’t have done this without you. It’s been an incredible experience beginning the building of the new classroom block and I can’t wait to see these kids take on the world!”

Freeman Gobah, PoP Ghana Country Director, shed light on PoP’s initiatives and achievements in Ghana, acknowledging the support of stakeholders in the 202 communities reached by PoP Ghana.

The event garnered attendance from education officials, government representatives, and local elders, including Lower Manya Krobo MP The Honorable Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, MCE Lower Manya Honorable Simon Kweku Tetteh, and Mark Okraku-Mantey, Deputy Minister of Tourism, among others. The program featured captivating cultural displays by students and community members, culminating in a traditional groundbreaking ceremony symbolized by pickaxes and shovels. Traditional drumming, speeches, and spoken word pieces in the local dialect added to the cultural richness of the event.

Ja Rule’s commitment to education is evident through his co-founding of L.I.F.E., a non-profit organization aimed at providing youth with extracurricular outlets and educational incentives. His personal pursuit of knowledge, exemplified by his completion of Harvard Business School’s online certification program for Entrepreneurship Essentials, underscores his dedication to prioritizing education over incarceration. In 2023, Ja Rule was honored at PoP’s 15th anniversary Gala with the Audacious Award for his role as a disruptor and advocate of social change.

Snoop Dogg Declines $100 Million OnlyFans Offer Out of Respect for Wife Shante Broadus

Recently on the Instagram Live series “Wake & Bake with Double S Express,” rap legend Snoop Dogg disclosed that he turned down a staggering $100 million offer from OnlyFans, a well-known content subscription service. The platform proposed that Snoop could earn the hefty sum by posting NSFW (Not Safe For Work) content, a proposition the rapper refused, citing respect for his wife, Shante Broadus.

Snoop Dogg, known for hits like “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” emphasized the importance of his relationship with his wife, Shante Broadus, who is also his manager. He expressed, “I got a Black wife. Ain’t no way in the world she gonna allow me to go on there and pull that thang out for no amount of money.” This statement underlines the mutual respect and the strong bond the couple shares, which evidently outweighs any financial incentive.

The couple’s relationship dates back to their teenage years when they both attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School in California. Their history is filled with shared moments, including attending school dances and prom together before graduating in 1989. They solidified their commitment to each other by tying the knot in June 1997 and later renewing their vows in 2008, showcasing the longevity and strength of their partnership.

During the interview, Snoop, 52, recounted how the proposal from OnlyFans was presented to him. The platform suggested that he could easily make millions, similar to other creators who have earned fortunes by posting explicit content. The proposition was straightforward: “They were like, ‘OnlyFans wants you to come on there, Snoop. You could do about $100 million. All you gotta do is pull that thang out,’” he recounted.

Despite the lucrative offer, Snoop Dogg’s decision to decline the OnlyFans deal highlights his values and the respect he holds for his marriage and his wife’s feelings.

Share of Profits From Adidas and Yeezy Sales To Go to Anti-Defamation League

First Adidas and YEEZY Restock Under New Agreement Set for June 1

The organizations for donations from the relaunch of Adidas bulk of YEEZY products have been revealed. TMZ states the upcoming profits will be split between the Anti-Defamation League and other charities.

The start of the sale will begin at the end of the month. Adidas states a “significant amount will be donated to selected organizations working to combat discrimination and hate, including racism and antisemitism.” It is believed $1.3 billion in products remained when the split between Ye and Adidas launched.

In February, The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) recently reported that Kanye’s anti-Semitic rants were linked to 30 incidents in the US targeting Jewish people.

“These incidents — which include vandalism, banner drops, targeted harassment, and campus propaganda distributions — demonstrate the ongoing influence of Ye’s conspiratorial, bigoted rants,” the ADL wrote.

“Immediately following Ye’s antisemitic comments, which included inflammatory tropes about Jewish power and Holocaust denial, the slogan ‘Ye Is Right’ surfaced online in hashtags and antisemitic accounts. The ADL Center on Extremism has also tracked references to ‘Ye Is Right’ in instances of on-the-ground antisemitic vandalism and harassment nationwide.”

Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the ADL, said in a statement to Billboard that Ye is inspiring people to commit “real-world acts of hate.”

Kanye West’s repeated antisemitic remarks – and his dredging up some of the worst anti-Jewish tropes imaginable – doubtlessly are having an impact and inspiring people to commit real-world acts of hate,” Greenblatt stated. “As we have long maintained, celebrities and others who engage in spreading hateful tropes need to know their words have consequences. Unfortunately, Kanye’s decision to continue to peddle hatred against Jews is only giving encouragement to people who are already infected with hate.”

Confirming the news, Reuters states Adidas CEO Bjoern Gulden revealed the renewed partnership to move some of the merchandise and donate some of the proceeds to international organizations.

A reported $1.3 billion in Yeezy-branded Adidas products are sitting in storage after the partnership was ended over the rapper’s antisemitic statements. Gulden stated plans for how Adidas will continue with the sale are not in place.

“What we are trying to do now over time is to sell some of this merchandise … burning the goods would not be a solution,” Gulden said.

Donating the sneakers was not an option out of fear the sneakers would reach the secondary market. Adidas stock is up 2% so far on the day. Ye would still receive 15% of the sales.

Speaking on the rapper, Culden stated about Ye, “As difficult as he was, he is perhaps the most creative mind in our industry.”

Today In Hip Hop History: Nike Dropped Air Yeezys In Retail Stores 14 Years Ago

On this date in 2009, “Yeezy, Yeezy Yeezy just jumped over Jumpman.”

The above line comes from music and fashion mogul Kanye West’s “Facts” track from his The Life Of Pablo LP, which was actually released in 2016. West landed a new deal with Adidas for his Yeezy brand, but the original sneaker was released by Nike seven years prior.

Four years later, West switched brands, With his Yeezy sneaker gaining the lion’s share of its popularity under the Adidas umbrella. Despite the long-promised line of Kanye-Nike collaborative products like the Air Yeezy II Red Octobers, Kanye is severed ties with the company after producing just two shoes in five years. 

“I said, ‘Well I need royalties.’ It’s not even like I have a joint venture. At least give me some royalties. Michael Jordan has 5 percent and that business is $2 billion. He makes a $100 million dollars a year off of 5 percent royalties,” West said. “Nike told me, ‘We can’t give you royalties because you’re not a professional athlete.’ I told them, ‘I go to the Garden and play one-on-no one. I’m a performance athlete.’”

Unable to come to a compromise, Yeezus jumped ship and headed over to a competitor, Adidas. “The old me, without a daughter, would have taken the Nike deal because I just love Nikes so much,” Kanye said in his Angie Martinez Hot97 interview. “But the new me, with a daughter, takes the Adidas deal because I have royalties and I have to provide for my family.”

Foot Locker Instructs Stores To Remove All Yeezys From Sales Floor

As the latest retailer to cut ties with troubled music and fashion mogul Kanye West, Foot Locker has yanked all Yeezys from their shelves yesterday(October 25) just hours after Adidas announced severing ties with West for his anti-Semitic statements.

“Foot Locker, Inc. does not tolerate any form of antisemitism, or hateful and discriminatory behavior,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “While we remain a partner with adidas and carry a wide assortment of their collections — we will not be supporting any future Yeezy product drops, and we have instructed our retail operators to pull any existing product from our shelves and digital sites.” 

All 874 of the company’s chain stores were told to put all of their Yeezy merchandise in the back room until f”urther notice”, according to an employee memo.

The decision came on the heels of Adidas ending its $1.5 billion deal with West, who has seen his fashion empire crumble in the past weeks.

Balenciaga, Vogue and CAA had previously cut ties with West in the wake of his Oct. 9 tweet in which he wrote, “I’m a bit sleepy tonight but when I wake up I’m going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE.”

The GAP, who had a multimillion dollar collaboration with Ye, annun ed yesterday that they would be taking “immediate steps to remove Yeezy Gap product” from stores as well as shut down YeezyGap.com.

Today In Hip Hop History: 50 Cent’s ‘Guess Who’s Back?’ Mixtape Turns 20 Years Old!

Today in 2002, 50 Cent released Guess Who’s Back?, his first official mixtape following the Power of the Dollar LP on the Full Clip Records indie imprint.

It was this offering that would catapult Curtis Jackson into the public eye. Eventually, the project would gain the attention of Eminem via his attorney/manager Paul Rosenberg and Shady would ultimately sign 50 Cent to Shady Records/Interscope and a new Hip Hop icon would be born.

Guess Who’s Back features production from Trackmasters, Clark Kent, Sha Money Xl, and featured street anthems like, “Your Life’s On The Line”. It also had the controversial song, “Ghetto Qu’ran” which allegedly led to his almost deadly shooting in 2000.

The album charted on Billboard setting up the G-Unit era and a lengthy career that continues today. 50 Cent would go on to release his mega Interscope debut, “Get Rich Or Die Tryin’” and become a top charting and live show sellout artist.

Raekwon Joins With Diadora and Foot Locker to Launch a New Community Initiative

Raekwon’s debut studio album, Only Built For Cuban Linx, was released in 1995. Raekwon, Diadora, and Foot Locker, Inc. have collaborated to produce “Community Linx,” a series of product capsules built with and linked to local communities, more than 25 years later. The trio will empower developing local music talent with the tools, resources, and information they need to improve their game with each release.

The campaign begins on January 27 with the release of a universal Diadora N9002 and an NYC-inspired Diadora N9002, both of which will be available in men’s sizes exclusively at Foot Locker and Champs Sports for $120. Raekwon’s signature is on the heel of both sneakers, which include a nylon-suede upper and a rubber outsole for greater durability and traction. The blue and orange N9002 NYC is available, whereas the black and grey N9002 is universal. The city of Philadelphia will be represented in the upcoming launch. Following that, New Era hats will be available in Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Houston, each of which will be related to a certain footwear collection. Every N9002 release in the Community Linx initiative will also come in a custom-designed packaging with local landmarks.

Raekwon, Diadora, and Foot Locker, Inc. picked 16 up-and-coming musicians from NYC for a four-week beat-making course conducted by producer and DJ Scram Jones in support of the N9002 NYC. From the use of various tools through mixing and mastering a track, each participant will gain important insight into the beat-making process.

At a private event at the Foot Locker 181st Street Community Store, they will have the opportunity to submit their beats to Raekwon and special guest Dave East. They’ll get direct comments and advice from established personalities in the industry, as well as take part in a Q&A and receive a pair of the N9002 NYC.

“I concepted Community Linx because I wanted to bring music and sneaker culture together in a meaningful way,” said Raekwon. “I’m thankful that Diadora and Foot Locker, Inc. believed in my vision. Together, we aim to inspire the next generation of music talent by providing them with tools and resources to hone their craft. I can’t wait to hear their work. Every sneaker capsule represents the hustle of each city and hopefully serves as a reminder to keep chasing your dreams.”
