Burna Boy Talks “AfroFusion,” His Still-Blazing Career & More With ‘British GQ’

63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards – Premiere Ceremony

Source: Rich Fury / Getty

Burna Boy has been bubbling as an artist since releasing his debut studio album L.I.F.E. back in 2013. Fresh from winning a Grammy Award for his latest set Twice As Tall, the “AfroFusion” artist talks up his still blazing career, how he’s transformed the musical landscape, and what It means to be a leader for his generation.

Sitting down with British GQ, the entertainer born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu spoke with the publication from his home of Port Harcourt in Nigeria. The piece opens up with the prideful moment when Burna won the Best Global Music Album award at the 63rd Grammy Awards show and the celebration that ensued. Burna’s acceptance speech made sure to center those within his nation and all of Africa.

The interview pointed to the fact Burna hasn’t truly opened up in interviews, preferring to let his songs speak for him and provide insight into his life. As the sound of AfroFusion became Burna’s trademark, so did his fame around the world rise. It is amazing to note that Burna’s style of music has crossed over to western ears but it should be expected when the music is as rhythmic as the style he employs.

As evidenced in the interview, Burna Boy realizes what he represents to his Nigerian brothers and sisters, and it appears he’s ready to accept the responsibility.

From GQ:

“I wasn’t celebrating because of myself,” he tells me. “It was almost as if I’ve broken a mental cycle of our people. Because our people have been very mentally oppressed to feel like they can’t do certain things and that certain things are unreachable. You are what you think, at the end of the day. [It is] time to start thinking about ourselves, not what the society said we should be or what our limitations say we should be. I’ve come from Port Harcourt, the bottom of the map in Nigeria, and now I’ve become a champion. It may not mean anything to someone else, but to me, and to us, it means more than you can imagine.”

The entire piece is a worthy read. Check out the full chat at Britsh GQ here.

Oakland rapper GQ is set to release his new EP, A Midsummer’s Nightmare, produced by Hip-Hop icon 9th Wonder. The release is set to release on Jamla Records on September 18.

The album will be pairing of GQ’s smooth and insightful delivery and 9th’s soulful beats

“A Midsummer’s Nightmare, ironically symbolizes the time we’re in as a country and world,” GQ says of the effort. “But also defines the thoughts and moments of myself at this moment in my life. Almost like living a world within a world. Beyond being inspired by the music itself, the inspiration came from life itself and just my current mental space. It’s always fun and an honor to work with 9th. So to do an EP with him was special.”

For a bit more on the life of GQ, before being on the Jamla Roster, he hooped for the UNC Tar Heels and won a national title. He then would have a stint at Lakers camp but injuries opened the door for his music career.

Pharrell Williams Covers ‘GQ”s First Ever Masculinity Issue

PHARRELL WILLIAMS GQ NEW MASCULINITY ISSUE

Source: Micaiah Carter / Micaiah Carter

Pharrell is once again pushing the boundaries of culture and fashion in one fell swoop. His newest magazine feature is a bold proclamation to say the least.

As the face of GQ’s November edition P is attempting to change the macho narrative. Dubbed the “New Masculinity Issue” the Virginia native is pictured sporting a Moncler 1 sleeveless poncho that hangs to the floor giving the look a ball gown vibe.

In the story the In My Mind author explains his stance on what the definition of being manly is. “Some of my old songs, I would never write or sing today. I get embarrassed by some of that stuff. It just took a lot of time and growth to get to that place,” he revealed. “‘Blurred Lines’ opened me up. I didn’t get it at first…lyrically,I was like, What are you talking about?… And then I realized that there are men who use that same language when taking advantage of a woman, and it doesn’t matter that that’s not my behavior. Or the way I think about things.”

Skateboard also detailed his spiritual awakening over the last couple of years and how will use his celebrity voice to invoke change. “I think this is a way that I can speak up at a time where we’re in the middle of a spiritual plight” he explained.

He also made it clear that he supports the LGBT+ community in their crusade for equal rights and representation. “They feel like their body is not connected to their spirit. And what kind of toxic environment do we live in that they have to justify how they feel? That must feel incredibly insane.”

A first for Gentleman’s Quarterly the “New Masculinity Issue” also looks across the culture at how modern masculinity is not a monolith but a beautiful, varied and ever-evolving spectrum. Comedian Jaboukie Young-White, photographer Collier Schorr, #MeToo founder and activist Tarana Burke, basketball star Kevin Love, rapper Killer Mike, comedian Hannah Gadsby, filmmaker John Waters, author Clint Smith, actor Asia Kate Dillon and more round out the Voices of New Masculinity package, a section of essays, mini profiles, and Q+As punctuated by a commissioned survey that lays down statistics of the movement.

“The New Masculinity Issue” hits newsstands October 15. You can read the feature in full here.

‘It’s Like F**king ABC’s’: DMX Felt “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” Was ‘Simple’ & ‘Repetitive’ on First Listen

Many may consider “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem,” the fourth single off DMX’s classic 1998 debut album It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, to be one of the greatest Hip-Hop songs of the ’90s and arguably of all-time even. However, one person thought it was pretty wack when the first heard it: Dark Man X himself!

Sitting down for an exclusive interview with GQ to break down some of his most iconic records, X recalls taking roughly 15 minutes to write the song. However, it wasn’t exactly a pleasurable experience to begin with. The multiplatinum-selling triple threat had this to say about his initial reaction to “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem”:

“I actually didn’t want to write it; I didn’t want to do that song. The beat was simple and repetitive, and the flow I came up with is just like — [there’s] so many other songs with so much substance, that I was like, ‘This song is, like, fucking ABC’s – like elementary!’”

DMX, GQ

Of course, he went on to appreciate making the record, continuing by stating, “I glad I did do it. I listened…and it worked out.” He also confirms that, during that same recording session, he also wrote “Fuckin’ wit’ D” and “Let Me Fly,” tracks 3 and 7, respectively, off the Billboard 200 chart-topping LP at the topic of this epic story. For the many of us that screamed “STOP! DROP! SHUT ‘EM DOWN, OPEN UP SHOP!” to the top of our lungs, we appreciate you for pulling this one off, X!

Watch the full interview over on GQ, where DMX also breaks down the stories behind “X Gon’ Give It To Ya” off the 2003 Cradle 2 the Grave soundtrack, “What’s My Name?” and “Party Up (Up in Here)” off …And Then There Was X from 2000, plus the special story behind his 2003 Grand Champ lead single “Where the Hood At.”
