Chef Mary Jane: Kelis Announces New Weed Cooking Show On Netflix

While she isn’t atop the charts with her singing career Kelis has created a solid name for herself in the culinary scene. Following her passion has paid off as she just secured a bag with the largest streaming service in the world.

The Grio is reporting that “Milkshake” singer will be bringing her talents to Netflix starting in April. According to her official Instagram account she will be hosting Cooked with CannabisThe caption details that it was not an opportunity she was necessarily seeking but she is embracing the chance to spotlight her love for food. “I’m really excited to announce my new show, Cooked with Cannabis on @Netflix!! Anyone that knows me, knows how much I love my Netflix, so this is a dream come true. Interestingly, this was one of those things that I didn’t go looking for, it kind of came to me.”

She went on to detail how the series will not only spotlight different cultural approaches to food but also will incorporate the happy flowers into the recipes in a progressive way. “As a chef, I was intrigued by the food and as an everyday person, I was interested in how powerful this topic is in today’s society. In this country, many things have been used systematically to oppress groups of people, but this is so culturally important for us to learn and grow together. I hope you all will tune in, it’s definitely going to be a good time! We launch on 4/20! XO, Kelis”.

Cooked with Cannabis will be co-hosted by Kelis and Portland-based chef Leather Storrs. The show will be competitive in nature and will pit three chefs against each other to prepare meals based on a theme. “Cooked with Cannabis is a show where weed is a seasoning rather than the reason. It’s granular, educational, heartfelt and smart,” Storrs told Food & Wine. “The contestants had personal and romantic relationships with the herb and they knew its intricacies: medically, chemically, spiritually and as an intoxicant. Further, there was a real sense of community and camaraderie.”

The show premieres April, 20.

Check Out Snoop Dogg’s Fried Baloney Sandwich Recipe

Snoop Dogg is enjoying a resurgence in his career outside of music, very much becoming a pop culture icon in the process. The longtime rapper has moved on to other endeavors including authoring a cookbook, and he recently shared a recipe straight from hood kitchens in a recent interview.

Intrigued by Uncle Snoop’s book From Crook To Cook: Platinum Recipes From Tha Boss Dogg’s Kitchen co-authored with Ryan Ford, food outlet The Takeout examined some of the recipes in the book and reached out to the D-O-Double-G to find out what inspires him when he’s in the kitchen and beyond.

The Takeout reports:

The Takeout: What meals do you remember growing up in Long Beach that were important to you?

Snoop Dogg: I grew up eating that soul food—mac ’n’ cheese, fried chicken, greens, sweet potato pie—food that came from my Southern family roots. It wasn’t a daily thing, but when we got together as a family, those meals meant something more than what was just on the plate. Nowadays, whenever I’m thinking about what to cook for a big group, that’s the kinda food I want to make. Passin’ it on, ya know?

TO: What’s your most important rule in the kitchen?

SD: Keep it laid back. You can learn all those fancy tricks and go crazy tryin’ to get everything looking perfect, but at the end of the day, it’s all about coming together over something you put out. People dig that effort. And remember to turn the oven off. That’s the wrong kind of blaze.

For some of us who grew up a certain way, we don’t need to know how to make a fried baloney sandwich, which Snoop calls the OG fried bologna sandwich. But for those of you who need a primer on how to make this vaunted delicacy of urban environments, look below.

Snoop Dogg’s OG Fried Bologna Sandwich
Makes 1 sandwich

3 slices bologna
1 Tbsp. unsalted butter
2 slices white bread
1 tsp. yellow mustard
3 slices American cheese
Barbecue potato chips, as many as you want
Place the bologna on a cutting board and cut one slit from the middle to the edge of each slice.

In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Swirl the skillet to cover the bottom completely. When the skillet is hot and the foam has subsided, add the bread. Lightly toast for about 2 minutes per side, or until golden. Transfer to a cutting board and spread the mustard on one slice of bread.

Return the skillet to the heat and add the bologna in a single layer. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the edges are golden and crisp. Flip the bologna and top each slice with the American cheese. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes more, or until the cheese starts to melt.

Place the fried bologna and cheese on the toasted bread slice without mustard and top with as many chips as you and your sandwich can handle.

Close the sandwich, placing the other bread slice, mustard-side down, on top. Go to town.

The Beastie Boys sat down with SiriumXM host Gray Rizzy recently to talk about their new memoir, cookbook included. The ’70s hip-hop group collaborated with Chef Roy Choi to share some delicious recipes with fans, as a part of the Beastie Boys Book.

Ad-Rock tells Rizzy how their partnership came about in the new episode that airs today, October 31:

“Oddly, a lot of our lyrics, we talk about food all the time. Mike has a friend that is now my very good friend. I took his friend, Roy Choi, an amazing chef, and we were just coming up with ideas for the book and we’re like ‘Oh we talk about food so much, let’s have a cookbook.’”

“Roy Choi, he went and took a bunch of lyrics and got inspired by those and made a bunch of recipes,” he adds.

The Beastie Boys Book is a nearly 600-page memoir that tells the story of their band. In addition to their life experiences and a cookbook, complete with illustrations, it also includes essays from Amy Poehler and Wes Anderson. Watch them talk about it in the clip above.
