Jordan Peele’s horror masterpiece Us has been dubbed the best film of 2019 and we are here for it.

On Tuesday (Dec. 10) The African-American Film Critics Association announced that the cinematic thriller had won a total of three awards for Best Film, Best Actress, and Best Director. The film, which starred Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Shahidi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex, Madison Curry and Elisabeth Moss definitely raised the bar for the genre of horror and the box office agrees after the film raked in more than $255 million globally. The AAFCA notes that it was his influence in changing the face of horror that made them their first choice.

“Jordan Peele continued to raise the bar in horror specifically and film overall,” AAFCA president/co-founder Gil Robertson said in a statement to Deadline. “With ‘Us,’ he once again upended the horror genre. His centering of a Black nuclear family determined to survive in a complex storyline in a genre where Black family units have historically been unseen is extraordinary.”

This year’s win echoes Peele’s domination of the AAFCA awards, two years ago the “Last OG” creator swept up the Best Film award for his critically acclaimed horror, Get Out, which took home statues for best picture, director, screenplay and actor for star Daniel Kaluuya. His creative approach to bring Black stories and folklore to the forefront in such a groundbreaking way is another reason the AAFCA notes that solidified their choice.

”[Jordan Peele] continues to push previously set boundaries with bold storylines that bring a refreshing perspective to cinema overall and the genre specifically. The film’s $255 million global gross is yet another example that inclusive filmmaking resonates big at the box office and it also resonated critically with our members who awarded the film with our highest honors.”

The AAFCA awards announcement follows the release of the 2020 Golden Globes nominations on Monday, which faced criticism after both Us and Ava Duvarney’s Netflix series was noticeably absent. The snub, however, did not stop Us star Lupita Nyong’o from celebrating her nominations via Twitter. Nyong’o tweeted that she was “feeling the love” as she tweeted a photo of herself with Us co-star Winston Duke on set.

”Feelin’ that love for #UsMovie! Thank you, @theaafca!!”

In addition to it’s high praises of Us, the AAFCA also named its top 10 films of the year, which included “Just Mercy,” “Clemency,” “The Irishman,” “The Farewell” and “Harriet.”

The AAFCA awards will be held on Jan. 22 at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood.

Jordan Peele’s New Movie Has A Record Breaking Opening Weekend

Jordan Peele’s second directorial feature film opened this past weekend. Following 2017’s Get Out (which earned the 40-year-old his first Oscar for original screenplay), Us has already shattered commercial projections and set new records in the Horror genre.

According to a Variety report amid the weekend, Us achieved more than $70 million of box office in the United States. The feat surpasses last year’s A Quiet Place for the best opening weekend for an original Horror film. Notably, the work also breaks a record held by Seth MacFarlane’s 2012 movie Ted, for strongest opening by an R-rated feature. In addition to the domestic $70MM, Us raked in nearly $17 million across 47 foreign countries and territories.

Perhaps more impressive than ticket sales, Peele’s second film is one of significant profitability. Variety notes that Us was made with a $20 million budget, including marketing and distribution. It also features a respected cast including Oscar-winning Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave), Winston Duke (Black Panther), and Emmy-winning Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale). The picture follows Get Out, which boasted a production budget of less than $5 million, before earning more than $255 million at theaters globally.

Competing with the NCAA basketball tournament, Us was projected to open at $38-to-45 million. Get Out debuted with $33 million two years ago.

Between Get Out and Us, Jordan Peele co-produced Spike Lee’s “Best Picture” nomination, BlacKkKlansmen.

The Luniz’ Biggest Hit Is A Backdrop For The Most Anticipated Horror Film Of 2019

More than two decades ago, The Luniz burst onto the scene with their 1995 crossover hit “I Got 5 On It.” During a year of releases that included Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… and Mobb Deep’s The Infamous, the duo of Numbskull and Yukmouth had their debut LP Operation Stackola buried under their contemporaries. Featuring Time Social Club’s Mike Marshall, “I Got 5 On It” ended up becoming a platinum-certified single just months after it was released and reached #8 on the United States song charts.

Post-Operation Stackola, The Luniz released two more group studio albums, including 1997’s Lunitik Muzik, which ended up being certified gold and peaking at #34. The C-Note Records outfit also landed on Rap-A-Lot Records for a stint in the early 2000s. That said, no song from the Oakland duo would receive the international awareness of their 1995 hit. Now, more than 23 years later, The Luniz are presumably getting cut a new check for “I Got 5 On It” as the Tone Capone-produced song became the background for the trailer of Jordan Peele’s new upcoming horror movie Us.

Snoop Dogg Reveals The Original Beat For Nuthin But A G Thang & Raps To It

The two-and-a-half minute preview of the film begins with Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o (who plays Adelaide Wilson) and her family returning to her childhood home for a picturesque summer vacation. In driving to their destination, Wilson and her husband Gabe (played by Black Panther’s Winston Duke) rejoice when “I Got 5 On It” plays on their vehicle’s stereo. It remains in the background of the trailer and when things start to get eerie – particularly when the family discovers their neighbors are demon versions of themselves – the song transforms from a party song about throwing money on weed to a chopped up slowed down version many heads probably didn’t believe could ever be created.

Us is slated for a March 15, 2019 release via Universal Pictures. Monkeypaw Productions handled the film’s creation with Peele being joined by Sean McKittrick and Jason Blum in the production credits.
