Sigh…we almost had it.

The hit series The Game, is no longer happening—at least not a CW. According to Deadline, the CW announced that they will not be proceeding with a one-hour followup series to the 2006 half-hour comedy from the original series’ creator Mara Brock Akil and American Soul co-creator Devon Greggory.

The publication reports that the reason the network passed on the follow up series was based on creative differences after executives read the pilot script written by Akhil and Gregory and wanted to make changes; changing the relaunch of the show from a rebooted continuance of the old show to a remake with a completely new cast—which led to Akil declining the redevelopment.

As previously reported, the reboot of the show was scheduled to be set in Baltimore, instead of San Diego with the premise surrounding The Game’s old crew of football players who would now be nearing retirement, mentoring a new set of rookies as they navigate the world of football and the potential hazards of being a professional athlete.

The Game, a spinoff from Akil’s long-running UPN/the CW comedy series Girlfriends, ran on the CW for three seasons before being canceled when the network switched from the half-hour comedy format. The show was later resurrected by BET where it aired for six more seasons before being ultimately cancelled in 2015.

As of press time there was no word if Akil would continue to pursue a network home for the reboot. We will keep you updated as the story develops.

The CW is Planning to Reboot ‘The Game’ Into Hour-Long Show

Are Derwin and Melanie Davis, Tasha Mack, Malik Wright, Jason Pitts and the entire football case of the hit show The Game preparing to make a return? The CW is reportedly developing one-hour follow up series, that will bring back Mara Bock Akil and Devon Greggory.

Deadline details the newest edition of The Game will take the show from San Diego to Baltimore. The show is set to become a dreamed and is said to bring “our out-of-touch old-timers are determined to help a bunch of knuckle-head new-schoolers navigate the ruthless game of football on and off the field.” The cast is said to work through fame, fortune and more.

Greggory, who is also the co-creator of American Soul, will be the show runner. Kelsey Grammer’s Grammnet and CBS TV Studios are producing the offshoot, they previously produced the earlier edition.

The Game’s original run on CW was three seasons but was cancelled and eventually picked up by BET for an additional six seasons. The reboot on The CW will be part of the effort of the network to find female-focused hourlong comedies.

When word spread last summer that Ruby Rose would be taking on the mantle of Batwoman on CW’s television world of DC superheroes many fans rejoiced but others went on to hate on the casting decision due to her sexual preference (y’all must not got no lives).

But regardless of the backlash brought on by a select few, Ruby Rose did the damn thing and was so impressive as the other caped crusader in her debut during this season’s Arrow-verse crossover event, Elseworlds, that the CW network has greenlit an entire season worth of Kate Kane’s cape and cowl rocking ways. Just be casting Rose as the lead in her own Batwoman series The CW will be making television history as the first network to have a gay lead character star in a live-action superhero series. Props.

Check out the first teaser trailer for Batwoman below and let us know if you’ll be checking it out when it debuts on The CW sometime soon.
