Quality Control Sells to HYBE America for $300 Million, Scooter Braun Led Deal

Scooter Braun’s HYBE America has announced the acquisition of Atlanta multi-hyphenate company QC Media Holdings, also known as Quality Control. The label division is home to Lil Baby, Migos, and City Girls.

Quality Control is founded by Chief Executive Officer Pierre Pierre “P” Thomas and Chief Operating Officer Kevin “Coach K” Lee.

Braun, who operates as the CEO of HYBE, once known as Big Hit Entertainment, led the sale. According to Variety, the deal is valued at $320 million in stocks and cash. HYBE is looking to build an entertainment group in music with interests across other areas.

“I am so proud and honored to have Coach and P join Bang and I as our partners,” said Braun in announcing the deal. “QC is one of the most significant independent labels in the world, working with incredible artists who are, and remain to be, the voices of culture. I’ll never forget riding around Atlanta over 20 years ago with Coach discussing our dreams and ambitions and how we said ‘If they let us in the game, we are never going to give it back.’ Now, all these years later, we are joining forces to make these dreams a reality.”

Added P: “HYBE are perfect partners for Quality Control as we come together to take our story and work global. All of HYBE’s leaders are entrepreneurs with phenomenal combined history finding talent and taking it to the highest levels. Taking QC worldwide requires key partners like this who understand building something from the bottom and aiming sky high. It matters to us greatly their grasp of culture and acutely seeing what QC has built and the limitless path of where it can go.”

On Instagram, P offered a secondary statement:

‘Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby’ Set to Hit Prime Video This August

Lil Baby

Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby, directed by Karam Gill and produced by Quality Films, MGX Creative, and 4PF, will be available exclusively on Prime Video. On Saturday, the feature-length documentary had its international premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, which was followed by a performance by Lil Baby.

“I’m blessed to be able to tell my story and have people care to hear it,” said Lil Baby. “This film is a real look into my journey, and if it inspires even one person to believe that they can get through hard stuff and dare to follow a dream, then it was worth every penny spent and hour worked. My story is many people’s story and I’m excited to share it.”

Lil Baby has become one of the most prominent artists in the world since his debut in 2017. Untrapped is a documentary that delves into his life and chronicles his meteoric rise to the top of the rap game. Baby, also known as Dominique Armani Jones to friends and family, was one of the most well-known people on the streets of West Atlanta until he was taken to prison.

Following his release in 2016, he was confronted with a difficult decision: return to the streets for quick cash, or take a chance on his charisma and unproven talent as a rapper. His second album, My Turn, was the best-selling album of the year in all genres of music in 2020. Lil Baby is now a loving father to his two young sons and an outspoken advocate for racial justice and police reform. Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby follows the meteoric rise of a solitary artist and activist while also delving into the structural oppression that prevents far too many people of color from achieving the American Dream.

Producers of Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby include Dominique “Lil Baby” Jones, Pierre “P” Thomas, Kevin “Coach K” Lee, Karam Gill, Daniel Malikyar, Andrew Primavera, and Blase Biello.

“I’m blessed to be able to tell my story and have people care to hear it,” said Dominique “Lil Baby” Jones. “This film is a real look into my journey, and if it inspires even one person to believe that they can get through hard stuff and dare to follow a dream, then it was worth every penny spent and hour worked. My story is many people’s story and I’m excited to share it.”

“This project has been in the works for several years now, during some of the most difficult times our country has faced,” said Karam Gill. “I couldn’t be prouder of the entire filmmaking team and the continued collaboration between Quality Films and MGX Creative to create another meaningful project that sheds light on larger societal issues. Lil Baby is someone who truly defied the odds, and I hope his story can bring positivity into our world.”

“With this documentary we got to highlight the obstacles and all the deep work that had to happen to get to where Lil Baby is now,” said Pierre “P” Thomas. “This raw footage is a powerful way to see that, and to see the negatives that were turned to positives. People will be beyond inspired.”

“Baby, like so many in this country, went through so many obstacles that could have thrown him into many bad places in life. To watch him come through to such a positive side is essential for people to see,” said Kevin “Coach K” Lee. “This documentary has the ability to change lives if viewers can believe just like he did.”

Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby will debut on August 26.

SoundCloud has announced a partnership with Solid Foundation, the management and creative services division of QC Media Holdings, which is owned and run by music industry veterans Kevin “Coach K” Lee and Pierre “P” Thomas. SoundCloud, the world’s largest A&R resource, and Solid Foundation, a full-service artist management firm, have partnered to uncover fresh talent and reinvent artist partnerships by providing bespoke resources, tools, and access to creatives.

QC Media invested in SoundCloud as part of the joint venture, and as a result, Lee, Thomas, and their Atlanta-based Solid Foundation artist management team will collaborate with the company to identify, invest in, and promote the careers of SoundCloud musicians. This groundbreaking agreement will bring together significant industry knowledge, proprietary data & insights, and resources to create custom A&R programs for selected artists that include development, distribution, marketing, and artist services.

“Coach K and P are two of the most influential voices in music, having identified, developed and grown some of the most successful hip-hop acts of our time,” said Eliah Seton, President of SoundCloud. “With this deal, we’re bringing together SoundCloud, the largest A&R source on the planet, with the creative genius of Coach and P. We are excited to partner with them in this innovative way as together we amplify the voices of who’s next in music.”

Lee and Thomas have molded the careers of some of today’s most popular singers, including Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane, before founding Quality Control Music, where they nurtured chart-topping artists like Migos, Lil Yachty, Lil Baby, City Girls, and others.

“With our years of ear-to-the-street skills coupled with SoundCloud’s endless stream of talent and powerful data pointing to what is authentically bubbling up in the scene I can’t think of a better merging of passion, intel and skill sets to create countless new paths for emerging artists. We are beyond excited for this partnership.”

Pierre “P” Thomas

“There is nothing more important to our process than discovering new artists, so partnering with SoundCloud, one of the most important hotbeds of talent, is incredibly exciting to us. Their data merging with our time-tested way of cultivating and building artists will be a blend to be reckoned with!”

– Kevin “Coach K” Lee

SoundCloud’s dedication to curating artist partnerships that allow flexibility to both artists and industry partners, with tailored and collaborative agreements focused at empowering artists to own and manage their rights and creative process, is demonstrated by this agreement. This news follows agreements with multi-platinum rapper Lil Pump and award-winning singer Tekno, which were previously announced.

Yung Joc Reacts to 42 Dugg’s “Before I Go Broke Like Joc” Line From “We Paid”

Yung Joc feels like 42 Duggs dissed him in the hit song “We Paid.”

Atlanta is one of the greatest city’s we have seen in Hip-Hop culture. Non-ATL natives have developed through close association with ATL artists and influences. This is the case for 42 Dugg.

The Detroit, MI rapper met Lil Baby in 2017 during a dice game. After building a relationship with “The Bigger Picture” rapper, he signed to his 4PF label and Yo Gotti’s CMG. Lil Baby is one of Hip-Hop’s most in-demand superstars. Any association with him can benefit any upcoming rapper. 42 Dugg is making the best of his relationship with his label CEO. He was featured on “Grace” and “We Paid” from Lil Baby’s platinum My Turn album. The latter peaked at No. 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 charts.

In the opening line of “We Paid,” Dugg says “Before I Go Broke like Joc.” One can presume that the rapper is dissing to Yung Joc. The “It’s Going Down” rapper recently appeared on the Ugly Money Podcast to address the line.

The rapper claimed to be half sleep upon hearing it.

“No one heard it when I heard it,” said the ATL veteran. “You ever hear some s**t so shocking you gotta look around like a ni**a in the room with you.”

He goes on to express his admiration of Lil Baby’s work and his solid relationship with both Quality Control’s CEO Pierre “Pee” Thomas and Yo Gotti. As for 42 Duggs, Joc was unfamiliar with the 27-year-old rapper until that line.

Quality Control’s Pierre ‘Pee’ Thomas Denies Allegations of Malpractice in Migos Lawsuit

Quality Control's Pierre "Pee" Thomas Denies Allegations of Malpractice in Migos Lawsuit

Migos filed a lawsuit against their longtime lawyer, Damien Granderson, for malpractice.

Variety reports the documents states Granderson “abused his position of trust as Migos’ fiduciary from the moment he was retained as Migos’ lawyer” and “cheated [the group] out of millions of dollars.”

The complaint also notes that Granderson has “glaring conflicts of interest” because he’s also Quality Control’s attorney. Now Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff are seeking millions in damages.

Granderson negotiated the deals with 300 Entertainment and Capitol Music Group/Quality Control and allegedly hid the extent of which QCM would be profiting. The deal “would allow Capitol to distribute all albums that QCM produced and that QCM was actually profiting far more handsomely than was apparent from the face of the documents that Granderson personally presented to Migos for immediate execution,” the complaint reads.

Per Variety, the group claims Granderson “failed to disclose both the complete nature of his relationship with QCM and the complete nature of the conflict in representing both QCM and Migos.”

This lawsuit will clearly have a negative effect on the trio’s relationship with the label. The label’s CEO, Pierre “Pee” Thomas denied all allegations in a lengthy statement. He said he “will not stand by and let Quality Control Music’s reputation and everything we have built and sacrificed be tarnished by allegations of unfair and unjust business practices.”

“It is unfortunate that the same people that we have worked hard for, provided opportunities for, and championed for are now alleging that we have participated in any kind of immoral or unfair business practices or took advantage of them and their careers, especially while we are dealing with the death of an artist on our label that was dear to us,” Pee began. “We have always practiced honest business and complete transparency from the beginning when we started Quality Control Music.”

It is unfortunate that the same people that we have worked hard for, provided opportunities for, and championed for are now alleging that we have participated in any kind of immoral or unfair business practices or took advantage of them and their careers, especially while we are dealing with the death of an artist on our label that was dear to us. We have always practiced honest business and complete transparency from the beginning when we started Quality Control Music. We built this business on family values, which has been so hard to do when you are dealing with so much pride and ego. The problem that I have been struggling with in this business as black man is jealousy, hate, division, and lack of communication. I was a millionaire before I got in the music business and for me to know the sacrifices I have made for the people that I have invested in and put every dollar, blood, sweat, and tears into is nonsense. I will not stand by and let Quality Control Music’s reputation and everything we have built and sacrificed be tarnished by allegations of unfair and unjust business practices. I am a student of this game and I have watched several black record label owner’s get destroyed by the same things that I am facing right now. This is why majority of the people in this business end up in financial turmoil and ultimately failing to reach their full potential. It is hard enough to be fighting and battling with corporations and the powers that be, I am not doing it with those who I consider family. I love my artists and I love my team. Everyone has their own lawyers. I understand in this business that you are not always going to end with the people you started with. I say that to say, I am not forcing anybody to be in business with us that has a problem and cannot communicate and does not want to work as a unit. Everything is negotiable. I wish my whole team more money, more blessings, and continued success. #longlivemarlo🙏🏾
