Administrators Suspended Over Racially Insensitive F.I.T. Fashion Show

Two administrators at New York’s famed Fashion Institute of Technology have been suspended after a recent graduate’s fashion show caused controversy over racially insensitive pieces that were added to the show.

According to the New York Times, Junkai Huang, a recent graduate of the iconic Fashion Institute of Technology, recently came under fire after a last minute $10 accessory add— a pair of oversize lips and blown-up “monkey” ears — resulted in public outrage after a Black model refused to wear the items and called out the insensitivity before accusing the creative director of Huang’s show of racism.

The controversy caused a much needed conversation over racism in the fashion industry and led to the suspension of two F.I.T. administrators, Jonathan Kyle Farmer, chair of the M.F.A. fashion design department, and Mary Davis, dean of the School of Graduate Studies, administrators announced Friday (Feb. 21).

In a public letter, the school’s president, Dr. Joyce Brown, who is African-American, said that the controversial show “failed to recognize or anticipate the racist references and cultural insensitivities that were obvious to almost everybody else;” before noting that the institute had commissioned an independent investigation of the incident.

“Based on an internal investigation the styling and accessorizing used in the show were provided to [Huang] rather than chosen at his discretion,” Dr. Brown said. “The collection he designed and produced was not aimed at invoking or provoking racial implications.”

Junkai Huang, who arrived in New York City in 2017 from Qingdao in eastern China, said in a recent interview that he was “sad and shocked” at the accusations.

“I have only lived in the United States briefly,” Huang said. “My understanding of American cultural references is still developing. In the future, I’ll be more aware about political correctness, cultural differences and history.”

In a statement on Instagram, Farmer said he was committed to learning from the situation.

“It was never our intent for the show’s styling to be interpreted as racist or to make people feel uncomfortable, but I now fully understand why this has happened,” Farmer wrote.

Although Farmer states he intends to grow from the incident, Ms. Davis didn’t quite echo his sentiments, stating that she “didn’t even know of the existence of the accessories until I saw them presented at the show,” before adding that her only role was meeting with students after the show, she said, to discuss their concerns.

“I have always taken full responsibility for those matters that are my responsibility, however, I should not be held accountable or blamed for not stopping actions/activity that I did not know existed,” she wrote in a statement.

As previously reported, the controversy began when Amy Lefevre, a 25-year-old Black model, refused to wear the accessories, which she said had been given to the models just as they were about to walk out for the show.

“I let the staff know that I did not want to wear these pieces as they were clearly racist and made me incredibly uncomfortable,” she said before adding that other models wore the pieces.

Lefevre revealed that while Mr. Huang would have let her walk without them, the director of the show, Richard Thornn, a creative director of NAMESldn, a London-based fashion agency, yelled at student designers to move away and pressured her to wear the accessories. Although she refused, Lefevre states that Mr. Thornn ignored her concerns before telling her that she’d “only be uncomfortable for 45 seconds.”

“It’s important to remember that people of color have historically been discriminated against by being characterized as in some way savage or animal,” Ms. Lefevre said. “There have been caricatures that institutionalized this racism in art and media. These big lips and overall monkey-looking accessories from the show struck me as an example of this.”

Cardi B Opens Up About NYFW Scuffle With Nicki Minaj

September was a crazy month in Hip Hop. Cardi B pressing Nicki Minaj and tossing her shoes at the Harper’s Bazaar Icon party at The Plaza Hotel in New York City during Fashion Week was among one of the many highlights.

Following the incident, Cardi took to Instagram to write, “I’ve let a lot of s–t slide! I let you sneak diss me, I let you lie on me, I let you attempt to stop my bags, f–k up the way I eat! You’ve threatened other artists in the industry, told them if they work with me you’ll stop f–kin with them!! I let you talk big s–t about me!!”

“I addressed you once in person, I addressed you a second time in person, and every time you copped a plea!!” Cardi continued. “But when you mention my child, you choose to like comments about me as a mother, make comments about my abilities to take care of my daughter is when all bets are f–kin off!! I’ve worked too hard and come too far to let anybody f–k with my success!!!!”

Bardi, who welcomed her first child with husband, Offset, in July ended the post, captioned “period,” by writing, “B—–s talk all that s–t in they raps but in real life they p–sy!! This s–t really is for entertainment!!”

Now, in a cover story for W magazine‘s Art Issue, Cardi is revealing what sparked her fight with Minaj.

“For a while now she’s been taking a lot of shots at me,” Cardi told the publication. “I spoke to her twice before, and we came to an understanding. But she kept it going.”

The real spark of the fight came when Cardi saw that Minaj had allegedly liked and then unliked a tweet about Cardi’s parenting skills, which Minaj has denied. “I was going to make millions off my Bruno Mars tour, and I sacrificed that to stay with my daughter,” Cardi continued. “I love my daughter. I’m a good-ass f–king mom. So for somebody that don’t have a child to like that comment? So many people want to say that party wasn’t the time or the place, but I’m not going to catch another artist in the grocery store or down the block.”

Cardi also opened up to the magazine about her pregnancy and how she was “freaking out” when she found out she was expecting.

“When I got pregnant, I was f–king freaking out,” Cardi shared. “Everybody around me was like, ‘No, this never happened before. Every artist that had a baby, they already put in years in the game. This is your first year. You’re going to mess it up. How are you going to make it?’ While I was pregnant, I kept telling myself, I can’t wait till I’m back out there. I’m going to look hot, and I’m going to be that bitch.”

Cardi B’s Shoe Throwing Reportedly Paid Off

Following the Cardi B and Nicki Minaj New York Fashion Week fiasco, we all questioned Bardi’s morale moving forward and if she would be allowed to sit at the cool kids table.

However, rumor has it that Cardi has benefited from the shoe throwing gate. She has not only reportedly been embraced by fashion house elites during Fashion Week in Milan, but she was invited to sit front row at the Dolce and Gabanna show. In addition, the rapper is also attending 3 major shows.

Interesting enough the love poured in for Cardi B. While her arch nemesis was in town as well, there are no reports of the two running into each other and they have managed to keep the drama down since landing in Milan.

Cardi B Addresses Rumor That Rihanna and Other Celeb Unfollowed her Amid NYFW

Cardi B took to Instagram Live to address a couple of rumors that Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, and other celebrities unfollowed her following her scuffle with Nicki Minaj at New York Fashion Week. “A lot of people were doing rumors that a couple of celebrities unfollowed me and that was not even true. Those celebrities weren’t even following me,” Cardi said. “Why can’t y’all just stop making rumors to try and make me look like I’m over and everything? […] Just relax, enjoy the show.”

Prior this month, Cardi’s long-stewing fight with Nicki at last overflowed at the Harper’s Bazaar Icons party where she hurled her shoe toward Minaj. Some presumed that her upheaval prompted Rihanna unfollowing her on Instagram. Rumors surfaced that Rih uninvited Cardi from her annual Diamond Ball because of the incident too.”They told Cardi not to show up, and told her that security would not allow her in to the event,” an insider told MTO, adding that Rihanna’s team informed authorities outside the venue that “Cardi was NOT to be allowed in.”

Check out the clip from Cardi B’s live below:

In other Bardi related news, her feature with Maroon 5 ended Drake’s 10-week streak atop the Billboard 100 charts. They’re both rumored to perform during the 2019 Super Bowl halftime performance.
