MLK Now: J. Cole Speaks Candidly About the Music Industry Exploiting Artists Who Make Drug-Using Music

J. Cole was one of the many notable, influential figures that attended the 2020 MLK Now conversation in Harlem, New York on Monday afternoon.

The rapper participated in a panel discussion with Marshawn Lynch that was moderated by Ryan Coogler. The director asked the men how they felt about their respective industries exploiting young, Black talent.

The question was initially directed to Cole because we’re witnessing a drug addiction crisis within Hip Hop unfold, but as long as these artists are making big bank no one cares about their health or the negative impact of their music.

Coogler asked, “Do you think it’s ethical for companies to sign kids that rap about addiction, to reap benefits off of their music and not get them help?” Cole quipped, “The clear answer is No. The next answer is capitalism. Is capitalism ethical?”

Elsewhere in the conversation, J. Cole talks about the point in his career when he grew tired of rapping about himself. The time, it was after the Forest Hill Drive album, at a time in my life where I was just tired of like, rapping about myself,” he explained. “So much of my art was storytelling from my own perspective. I’d always give you branches of someone else’s perspective but so much of it was like my personal journey, my personal growth, my personal flaws, this, that and the third. And it was a time period when I was like that was not interesting to me.”

Marshawn Lynch Offered Clutch Advice: “Take Care Of Y’all Chicken”

Divisional Round - Seattle Seahawks v Green Bay Packers

Marshawn Lynch takes his hood authenticity quite seriously. That includes a devotion to financial prudence, and he offered up some clutch advice to young NFL players.

The Seattle Seahawks got bounced out of the playoffs by the Green Bay Packers, but it meant Lynch dropping some jewels during his post-game presser. The twice retired and unretired running back offered up a lesson in slang for sports reporters nationwide in the process.

After answering some quick questions of his come back (“It was solid”), whether he’ll return (“We’ll see what’s happening.”) and what was going through his mind (“We lost.”)

“Look, I’ll say like this though, right?” said Lynch said. “This is a vulnerable time for a lot of these young dudes, you feel me? They don’t be taking care of they [sic] chicken right, you feel me? So if it was me, or if I had a opportunity to let these little young sahobs know something, I’d say take care of y’all money, African, because that sh*t don’t last forever. Now I done been on the other side of retirement and it’s good when you get over there and you can do what the f*ck you want to. So I tell y’all right now while y’all in it: Take care of y’all bread, so when y’all done go ahead and take care of yourself.”

If you can’t keep along, Lynch was telling young NFL players to take care of their money and not spend it on frivolous things right now, so they can still have a healthy bank account when they’re playing days are over.

He added, “So while y’all at it right now, take care of y’all bodies, you know what I mean—take care of y’all chicken, ya feel me; take care of y’all mentals because, look, we ain’t lasting that long. I had a couple players that I played with that they’re no longer here no more — they’re no longer — so, I mean, ya feel me? So you start taking care of y’all mentals, y’all bodies, y’all chicken, so when y’all ready to walk away, walk away and you’ll be able to do what you want to do.”

And that was that.

Marshawn Lynch is a national treasure. Give us one more NFL season for the culture, and the interviews, please.

The battle for the NFC West division just got even more interesting. Marshawn Lynch has resigned with his former team.

As spotted on Hypebeast the running back has resigned with the Seattle Seahawks. According to multiple reports the new deal will have him back on the field this week in a pivotal game versus the red hot San Francisco 49ers at CenturyLink Field. On Monday, December Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network tweeted that he has already passed his required physical tests.

Head coach Pete Carroll expressed his enthusiasm about Lynch’s return in a formal press conference. When asked how long the deal has been in the works he made it clear the two parties have been in communication ever since he left the team. “There’s been times over the years where we have hooked up for one reason or another where we played against each other or whatever there were always a couple of messages” he revealed. In regards to this go around right now there’s been a line of communication over the years.”

This finds the tailback back at the team he played for from 2010-2015. The move took the sports world by surprise as the Oakland native retired from the organization in 2016. He would return to the turf a year later in 2017 as a Oakland Raider. After two seasons he would go on to retire once again.

Lynch took to his Instagram to detail the opportunity saying “there’s history there and we have unfinished business” which points to their loss to the New England Patriots at Superbowl XLIX.
