IKEA Apologizes After Workers Protest Juneteenth Lunch Menu

Your NYC and ATL Juneteenth Guide

IKEA is apologizing for serving fried chicken on Juneteenth.  A store in Atlanta, Georgia wanted to honor employees last Saturday with a holiday lunch menu.  Along with the chicken, it included watermelon, mac-n-cheese, potato salad, collard greens and candied yams.  This didn’t go over well with workers.  More than 20 of them called out in protest, arguing the food has been used to stereotype Black people.

According to the New York Post, IKEA said the menu was created with the best intentions, but admits they got it wrong.  The furniture retail giant promised to “thoughtfully honor Juneteenth in the future.”

“In addition to offering Juneteenth as one of our paid holidays nationally, our IKEA Atlanta store has recognized Juneteenth with our co-workers for the past four years. To honor the day, a lunch menu was created with the best of intentions, including recommendations from black co-workers,” a spokesperson said. “We value our co-workers’ voices and changed the menu after receiving feedback that the foods that were selected are not reflective of the deeply meaningful traditional foods historically served as part of Juneteenth celebrations. We got it wrong and we sincerely apologize. We are committed to educating ourselves and putting a process in place that will allow us to thoughtfully honor Juneteenth in the future.”

The spokesperson additionally noted that “there were Black co-workers involved in the creation of the menu. Out of respect for their privacy, we cannot go into more detail, and we take this as an important learning and shared responsibility.”

Jazmine Sullivan Recalls Racist Experience in Philadelphia Macy’s on Juneteenth

Jazmine Sullivan Recalls Racist Experience in Philadelphia Macy's on Juneteenth

Jazmine Sullivan called out a Philadelphia Macy’s employee who was responsible for her negative experience in the department store on Juneteenth.

“Wow to look racism in the eye, and especially on Juneteenth was a wakeup call,” wrote Sullivan on her Instagram Story.

“Mary King at Willow Grove Macy’s look of disgust while ringing up my boyfriend’s mother will forever be etched in my mind.”

The “Pick Up Your Feelings” singer didn’t get specific about the “honest mistake” but made it clear that it was the “store’s mistake” and instead of being met with “understanding and kindness” she was met with “prejudice” while shopping.

She concluded the post saying, “Thank God for the Black employee who tried to rectify the situation (that u didn’t listen too. I wonder why u didn’t take her advice Mary?). This coulda went a whole different way. U need to be grateful we know Jesus b***h!”

Jazmine Sullivan isn’t the first person to call Macy’s out for racist allegations. Cincinnati City councilman Jeff Pastor called the company out for their racially insensitive 2018 Christmas campaign.

“Hey @Macys what’s wrong with this picture?” Pastor asked about the ad featuring four families, with the Black mother being the only single parent. “It’s not like they did it with ill intent. But it’s somebody within diversity and inclusion missed that picture,” said Pastor to NBC12 at the time.

ICYMI: 700 Pound George Floyd Statue Placed In New Jersey For Juneteenth

George Floyd Statue New Jersey

New Jersey commemorates George Floyd with a 700 pound bronze statue.

A statue of George Floyd was unveiled this week in front of Newark City Hall in New Jersey.  The 700 ound bronze statue honors the life of George Floyd, who was murdered in police custody last year. His widely viewed death was able to re charge and elevate the Black Lives Matter movement and has resulted in police reform measures across the country. According to reports, twenty-four states and the District of Columbia enacted legislation immediately following Floyd’s death. In a normal year, most states would have been out of session by May. But due to the pandemic, states were able to take up legislation working within COVID-19-related session delays, through multiple special session convenings or through bipartisan cooperation. Significant legislation has also been enacted in 23 states so far in 2021.

For instance in New Jersey, the use of force by an officer towards a civilian is now prohibited, unless used as a last resort. There also been the removal of Confederate statues from public parks and controversial names from organizations throughout the country. The New Jersey event honoring the life of George Floyd ties in with Juneteenth 2021.

“The artwork honors the life of George Floyd, an African-American man who was brutally murdered by a white Minneapolis police officer,” the mayor’s office said in a statement. “Mr. Floyd’s death elevated the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement which has resulted in an international response, including protests, police reform measures, and the removal of Confederate statues from public parks and racist names from organizations.”

Trae The Truth And Phylicia Rashad Head Off SiriusXM’s “Juneteenth Inaugural Unityfest” Panel

Screen Shot 2021 06 18 at 8.10.26 AM

SiriusXM Urban View host Mike Muse led a special panel discussion to celebrate, educate, and increase cultural awareness surrounding Juneteenth and garner awareness for the “Juneteenth Inaugural Unityfest Event” on Saturday, June 19th. The virtual one-hour special featured respected voices from the worlds of politics, media, academia, community activism, and entertainment who shared insights and perspectives regarding the importance of Juneteenth. Panel guests included:

  • Trae tha Truth – 2021 recipient of Billboard Changemaker Award for his social activism. American rapper, songwriter, record executive and activist from Houston, Texas says you “don’t have to be qualified” to have a voice and shares how he’s “always spoke up” for his people: “Sometimes you have to step up and get involved. Like when I leave the house, from whether it’s for George Floyd, or Breonna Taylor, or anybody I understand there’s a chance I’m not coming back home and I’m prepared for that for my people.”
  • Phylicia Rashad – Famed American actress, singer, stage director, and newly appointed Dean of Fine Arts at Howard University. Participant in the Juneteenth Unityfest event reflects on the world uniting to stand for human rights and said “One of the most gratifying days in life that I remember was at the heels of the George Floyd tragedy. And that was the day that people around the world, without a single leader, without an organization, without an arranged affair, came out into their streets, wherever they were in the world to stand for the dignity of every human being..That was the day that the light shone brightly. The light in every human heart..That was a day and there was no political agenda, there was no political party, there was no self-interest group, nobody funded anything. The people came out because of the light in their hearts to stand for the decency of humanity. I was so grateful to see that day.”
  • Ms. Opal Lee – The 94-year-old activist and lifelong Texan who has campaigned to make June 19th a national holiday for years talks about Juneteenth’s inclusive empowerment: “It’s more than a festival..and it’s more than just black families. We’ve come a long way, but we got a hell of a long way to go, and that’s a fact.”
  • Robert Randolph – Grammy-nominated artist and creator of the star-studded ‘live’ Inaugural Juneteenth Unityfest Eventthat will be streamed globally on Saturday, June 19th  talks about the creation of Juneteenth Unityfest.
  • April Ryan – White House Correspondent, CNN Political Analyst, D.C. Bureau Chief for TheGrio, author, and speaker comments on the lack of apologies for the atrocities inflicted on Black Americans: “The wrong has not been corrected. There’ve been apologies to so many communities for issues, the atrocities that happened to them, however, we are still uncovering, discovering, and pushing, but not knowing what to be done to change the dynamic..We have to understand that we are that part of history that I founding fathers talked about. They didn’t imagine us being a part of it, but when they say we the people, we are we the people. And we are still forming a more perfect union.. We cannot be afraid to correct the wrongs.”
  • Dr. Daina Ramey Berry – Chairperson of the History Department at University of Texas at Austin with a PhD in African American Studies speaks about uncovering the gruesome history of black bodies in medicine: “I think, the thing that surprised me in the last five years was to learn that after enslaved people died, some of their bodies were sold as part of a cadaver trade, and they were sold to medical schools for anatomical research. And that floored me because I didn’t understand why I had not learned that in graduate school. I didn’t understand why that was not part of history books. It’s not a pleasant memory. It’s not a pleasant history, but people use our bodies to learn about human anatomy and most medical students for the first 30 or 40 years of medical school research were learning on black bodies.”

The special airs on Saturday at 2:00pm and Sunday at 11:00am ET on SiriusXM Urban View, channel 126.

President Biden Enacts Juneteenth As a Federal Holiday

Juneteenth Federal Holiday Biden

President Biden signed legislation creating Juneteenth a holiday during a ceremony at the White House.

President Biden signed a bill yesterday establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday.  While the legislation was passed by the House and Senate with unusual speed this week and overwhelming support from both chambers of congress, President Biden argued there’s much more work to do and said the “sacred right to vote is under attack” in many states. Biden added, “Great nations don’t ignore their most painful moments.” Biden said “acknowledging those moments helps a nation heal and grow stronger.” President Biden also stated in his speech right before signing the bill that slavery took a terrible toll and was America’s “original sin.”

Juneteenth has long marked the commemoration of the end of slavery in the U.S especially for Black people in the south. June 19, 1865, is when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas. Although, technically they were legally free 2 years prior but still had not been afforded such rights and liberties. The Juneteenth National Independence Day is the first new federal holiday that has been established since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.

Texas Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee, introduced the Juneteenth National Independence Act, on February 25, 2021 as H.R. 1320 and has been fighting diligently for decades to have this day recognized federally. The Texas 18th Congressional District leader shared on her Twitter two days before the signing. “We celebrate the first passage of the bill in the Senate! This has been a long journey with the work of our fellow Texans, the late Representative Al Edwards and Opal Lee. We’re working very hard to get his bill signed by the President in the near days in order to have a historic celebration of Juneteenth this June 19, 2021. It has been a long journey! Juneteenth equals freedom and freedom is what America is about!

Vice President Kamala Harris shared that Juneteenth is a day of pride and a day of action in the ongoing struggle to achieve racial equality in the U.S. Our first Black woman ever elected to VP also noted enslaved people helped build the White House. Harris said, “We have come far and we have far to go.”
