You Ain’t Bugging: The Internet Is Being Slowed Down Due To Surging Traffic

The Internet Is Being Slowed Down Due To Record Surge In Usage

If you been on your computer and noticed downloading things takes a bit longer than usual you’re not tripping. The internet has indeed been slowed down due to the unprecedented amount of strain on it it.

The New York Times reports that internet speed is taking a hit due to the record surge of users due to the coronavirus pandemic that has a lot of people now stuck at home. The report details how broadband speeds in the United States have declined since states began issuing stay-at-home orders to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

Per the New York Times:

And last week, as a wave of stay-at-home orders rolled out across the United States, the average time it took to download videos, emails, and documents increased as broadband speeds declined 4.9 percent from the previous week, according to Ookla, a broadband speed testing service. Median download speeds dropped 38 percent in San Jose, Calif., and 24 percent in New York, according to Broadband Now, a consumer broadband research site.

Europe’s internet service has also felt the strain as well, back in mid-February, Italy, Germany, and Spain, seeing internet speeds begin to take a hit.

Companies have begun to combat the issue by taking specific measures. European regulators have urged streaming services like Netflix and YouTube to reduce the file size of their video files, so they don’t take up so much bandwidth. In the United States, wireless service providers were given “access to more spectrum to bolster the capacity of their networks.” YouTube has even downgraded the quality of its videos from high to standard definition, around the world. Disney+ launch in France was delayed by two weeks.

We reported yesterday that video game companies like Microsoft and PlayStation were monitoring the situation closely. Xbox is even urging game studios to roll out necessary updates and new releases during off-peak hours to reduce network congestion.

“Microsoft’s Xbox gaming business recently asked large gaming companies to release online updates of their games during off-peak hours while it helped focus on the critical internet needs of people involved in the coronavirus crisis, according to an Xbox email reviewed by The New York Times. Video game updates can require great amounts of bandwidth to download.”

“Xbox asked the companies to release updates in a four-hour overnight window in North America, and only from Monday through Thursday.”

We just hope this crisis doesn’t go on for much longer, but it seems the companies are on top of things…for now.

Kenneth Petty Asks Judge For Internet Access After Registering As A Sex Offender

Celebrity Sightings In New York City - February 12, 2020

Nicki Minaj’s husband, Kenneth Petty, wants to get online.

According to TMZ, after turning himself in for failing to register as a sex offender, Kenneth Petty is petitioning the court to allow him to get online—something that requires a judge’s approval due to relocating from New York to Los Angeles without registering and one of the terms of his pretrial release.

As previously reported, back in November Petty was pulled over in California for a traffic violation.  It was discovered during the traffic stop that he had failed to register as a sex offender in California after moving from New York. He was arrested and charged with failing to register as a sex offender. Petty was then released on bond and was mandated to adhere to a list of stipulations. While out on bond,  he is required to wear an ankle monitor,  adhere to a curfew, he isn’t permitted to leave Southern California or use the internet.

The site reports that while prosecutors have approved the request, it’s still awaiting the judge’s signature.

Petty, now 41, was convicted of first-degree attempted rape in April 1995. He was 15-years-old and the accuser was 16-years-old at the time and Petty was accused of using a sharp object to force the victim to engage in sexual acts with him. He served almost four years in prison before being released and serving an additional 7 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter.

Earlier this month talk show host Wendy Williams took to her gossip segment to air Petty out, adding not only that Nicki Minaj shouldn’t have married Petty, but also that his rape conviction is tarnishing her brand.

”You should have never married him, he’s tarnishing your brand.” Wendy said.

But last week, the New York bred host took things one step further by hosting a crime expert on the show to dissect Petty’s charges.

”There’s a bigger picture. What do we do about our kids? my reaction was not so much about Nicki [Minaj], it’s about how do you keep your kids protected?”

During the segment, security expert, Bill Stanton, noted that it’s up to Petty to register every time he moves to a new state and that if it isn’t done—the result will always be a federal arrest.

“It may vary from state to state, but when you’re a convicted sex offender, you file with the state, you give them your name, address, DNA sample, and fingerprints — all of that good stuff so law enforcement can track you,” Staton said. “Now, if you move, it’s incumbent upon you to notify the new place of residence to law enforcement so they can track you too… Once you’re registered to the state, the state kicks it up to the feds, and that’s how he gets caught.”

Although the experts notes that the failure would always certainly lead to an arrest, he added that due to Petty’s financial status that jail time would more than likely not be served.

”Well, this is where it gets hanky here because they’re looking for the background, the circumstances,” Staton continued. “Now, if Mr. Petty’s crimes were anything but, he has some high dollar money, he’s probably hired a high power attorney. My guess is, he’s not going to do any hard time.”

Petty pled not guilty to failing to register as a sex offender and has since been indicted by a grand jury on these charges. If convicted he can he sentenced to up to 10 years in prison. His trial starts April 28th.

Mass Shooter Message Board 8chan Shutdown After Cloudflare Pulls Service

Domestic Terrorist Safe Space, 8chan Offline

Source: domoyega / Getty

Over the weekend, the United States suffered its 249 and 250 mass shootings of the year. Saturday (August 3) in El Paso, Texas, a lone white gunman killed 20 people injuring dozens. It was later revealed by authorities the suspect detailed his plan ahead of time on the website 8chan. It is now offline after Cloudflare pulled its support for it.

In a blog post, Cloudflare CEO, Matthew Prince clarified why he decided to stop providing support to the internet message board.

“We just sent notice that we are terminating 8chan as a customer effective at midnight tonight Pacific Time. The rationale is simple: they have proven themselves to be lawless and that lawlessness has caused multiple tragic deaths. Even if 8chan may not have violated the letter of the law in refusing to moderate their hate-filled community, they have created an environment that revels in violating its spirit.”

“We continue to feel incredibly uncomfortable about playing the role of content arbiter and do not plan to exercise it often.”

The company’s decision is a complete about-face from its original stance. On Sunday, Cloudfare told CNN that it had no plans to stop providing service to 8chan. Even the site’s creator Fredrick Brennan is also calling for his brainchild to be permanently shut down. Three mass shootings — including mosque killings in Christchurch, New Zealand, and the synagogue shooting in Poway, California — were announced on the website. The final straw was El Paso for Brennan who in an interview stated the site needs to go.

“Shut the site down. It’s not doing the world any good. It’s a complete negative to everybody except the users that are there. And you know what? It’s a negative to them, too. They just don’t realize it.”

Despite it being shut down, for now, there is still a chance 8chan can find new life with a different internet service provider. On the company’s official Twitter account it stated: “there might be some downtime in the next 24-48 hours while we find a solution.”

Whichever company does decide to work with 8chan should be reminded that it will be help pushing white nationalism and racism.

Mariah Carey Shuts Down #BottleCapChallenge, Plus The Runner-Ups

Mariah Carey & Other Celebs Partake In The #Bottlecapchallenge

Source: Judy Eddy/WENN.com / WENN

You can always count on the internet to come up with some sort of challenge to pique our interest. The latest one to take social media by storm is the #bottlecapchallenge — where those who partake try to unscrew the cap of a bottle with a roundhouse kick — and numerous celebs have taken part in it. Mariah Carey though seemingly may have won it with her creative take on it.

The challenge which was reportedly started by Kazakh taekwondo champion Farabi Davletchin who later asked other celebs to join in on the fun. Answering the call were action movie star Jason Statham, singer Jon Mayer, Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds, Diplo, Ellie Goulding and more.

While the original premise of the challenge is to remove the bottle cap by kicking it, others have found other creative ways of removing it the bottle cap. So far we have seen a slipper and even a dildo (yes a sex toy) but it’s Mariah Carey’s attempt that currently has everyone declaring the singer has one the challenge. Instead of using her feet, the “Shake It Off’ singer used her powerful voice hitting a legendary high pitch to make the top magically pop off the bottle.

While it’s safe to assume this was a product of some great editing, it was still impressive to watch. To see the rest of the hilarious and smart #Bottlecapchallenge videos hit the gallery below.
