2nd Round Q&A With Rising Oakland Rapper HeiR

HeiR! Thanks for the consistent body of work you’ve been putting out for the past year. Before getting into the new EP, for the readers who don’t know, how long have you been making music?

I been doing this since middle school when I wrote my first rhyme. Like 20 years ago lol.

We have seen a major growth in your music since the last time we did a Q&A!  In your opinion, what are some major improvements in your music?

I feel like my songs became a lot more structured since my last releases. It’s hard for me to describe my sound, I would have to say I’m always pushing to do something creative, and I always want to have something to say.

How are you coping with this whole Covid 19 situation? Has it delayed any new music production by any chance?

It was hard finding a open studio but when I did I locked in. Covid is teaching me to be more self sufficient.

We have to ask, with all this social discourse and revolt, protesting and rioting, exposed police brutality toward blacks and BLM, how do you feel about this? We would love your perspective on the climate we are living in right now.

I went thru a real traumatic experience with law enforcement when I was 18 where I almost died. It’s amazing to me how no one protested or rioted when that happened to me. A cop also shot and killed the babydaddy of a girl we knew. Nobody organized a protest or nothing. Police are known for being rough where I come from in alameda, CA but nobody ever started a movement and spoke up. Now everybody wants to riot and spark up protests and try to be a part of the change that needs to happen. I feel like it only matters to people now because it’s a trend soon they’ll forget about it and stop fighting when others stop.

Being from Oakland, have you witnessed any rioting, looting etc due to the BLM protests?

Yea I saw all that shit right in the heat of it. Bank atms hanging out the wall all busted up. 7 eleven ransacked with windows busted and people running in and out. A line of police with gear on and automatic weapons standing outside of Best Buy… shit was nuts.

Are you voting this year? If so, who are you voting for?

Nope. I don’t feel like who I vote for matters anymore. I feel like it never did. Change for me happens in my own pursuit of happiness and helping my family.

Please breakdown the creative process of your new EP “The Everybody’z.Poor”. And tell us a little about the album cover concept! Also who produced this project?

I had been sitting down and really looking at the insane reality of the rich only being 1% and with the middle class disappearing there is only rich and poor now. Gentrification is some real shit and it’s happening everywhere. I felt like I wanted to diagnose this reality in my music and so I sat down and wrote my ideas on the pursuit of financial stability and all that comes with it. When I was done writing it felt like a project and so I decided to make a ep.

I had been surfing Instagram and found this producer in the sponsored ads who had an amazing sound. It was that unique sound that I liked and it carried the qualities of a movie soundtrack, like the background music of a movie or anime scene. So I hit him up and found out his name was @0teska on Instagram and was able to get some beats to put behind the lyrics. The cover concept came together when I found this singer from Queens, New York @phoenixjoans who just started releasing her music and had a unique voice that was similar to Macy gray with the lyrical ability of jhene aiko. Since I decided to name the project The Everybody’s.Poor EP I wanted the cover to reflect the poverty that’s existed in where both of our families come from even before our conception by showing our face on their country’s currency. The blood symbolizes the blood of our ancestors spilled on the soil.

Your honest opinion, out of all the songs on the project, which is the one song you feel stands out the most!?

I feel like “Noel” is a big shock to a lot of people that don’t know me or thought they knew me lol.

If it came down to 1 ALBUM only, what underground Hip Hop album would you consider THE BEST OF ALL TIME!!!???……One 1 album you can choose.

Illmatic off top.

Any new music we can expect for the rest of 2020?

I’m working on a new project now that has a few moving parts to it so to complete the whole thing it will take longer than the few months left in this year. I may put up some a teaser from it or some unreleased music it depends.

Has your definition of “underground hip hop” changed since the last time we asked?

Nope. The underground will always the raw unfiltered and unfucked wit, that will never change.

Q&A With Oakland’s Very Own HeiR

– Give us a brief background on yourself HeiR. What part of Oakland you from? How long have you been making music?

I’m actually from Alameda which is like “South Oakland,” its an island connected to Oakland by a tunnel and bridges. I been living in west Oakland now for about 10 years. Alameda is where i went to middle school and high school, and recorded my first rhyme in a studio. I been recording music since 2003. So 16 years deep in the game… but officially I wrote my first rhyme at 11 yrs old. I’m 30 now, u can do the math on that one.

– You part of a collective or group, or a solo artist?

I’m a solo artist. But I have been part of ChingaChang Records run by CEO Dan Herman for 10 years now as an intern. Kool G Rap’s album ‘Half A Klip’ was coming out produced by DJ Premiere and Dan, or Dmak as i like to call him, gave me a chance to be part of the project. It took me yeaars but I finally was able to get G Rap’s first video “On the Rise Again” produced by DJ Premiere and featuring Haylie Duff, from that project ‘Half A Klip’ in motion. Should be released this year… But yea tha’ts my only affiliation outside of being a solo artist.

– Congrats on your new mixtape, “2pac’s Heir“. What made you pay homage to Pac?

I love Pac! I came from Maryland to Cali just like Pac did. When i was 10 my lil’ brother’s pops would beat me and harass my mom constantly. So the police had to come a few times to arrest him. My mom worked a government job, getting veterans their benefits who were retired and struggling…. All the cop activity from my step pops getting violent reached my moms job. So they sent a guy from the office she worked in to spy on her and get more info. She got scared when she saw him everywhere she went. And heard him and other people he was with in a car using radio’s. So one day i was in the middle of class and she took me out to the car and next thing i knew we were driving to Cali. She tried to run from him but he followed us. Its so crazy, I lived a life just like Pac before i even knew about him and his music. I was only 10 running from government spies with my mom. When i found out about Pac and his life it was like I found out i had a twin. I mean it was unbelievable how much of fate it was that we both came from Maryland to Cali and we both were running from spies. So I wanted to make something in his memory but in my own style.

– What is your favorite 2pac song or album?

My favorite 2Pac song is “OldSchool.” I feel like all the fake controversy circling around his so called beef with the east coast can be exposed with this track. In one song he showed love to a whole coast and acknowledged what they started. Pac was a real one. Plus that song is FIRE.

– With the scene filled with rappers, in your own words, what makes you stand out from the rest?

That’s almost a question you would have to ask the fans. But as you said, “in your own words” so I would have to say, my metaphors are different and my vocab is more expansive and descriptive. Like when i say, “stab when i write, graphite knife” im using “graphite knife” to describe how sharp my lyrics are. “Graphite” is rarely used in a rhyme and how i put the line together as a metaphor for sharp lyrics was descriptive. A pencil can now be seen as a “Graphite Knife.” Thank me later

– Our highlight question, what’s your definition of underground hip hop?

Underground hiphop is that blank cd or casette tape with graffiti style writing on it saying any of these names…. 2Short, 2Pac, Biggie Smalls, Westside Connection, Blackstar, Lauryn Hill, Canibus, Mac Dre, Mob Figaz, Sade, Nas, AZ, Eminem, Black Thought, Vinnie Paz, Royce Da 5’9″, IllBill, TI, Joey Badass, Outkast, Redman and Method Man, Wutang Clan, Black Hippy, Cassidy, Kool G Rap, Rakim, J Cole, and oh yeah HeiR

– Where can people find more of your music?

– Lastly, any shout outs?

Shouts out to my moms!! Made me war ready in a cold war.

HeiR – “2Pac’s HeiR” (Mixtape Review)

For any artist, of any stature, anytime you emulate an iconic figure in any career, be prepared to be critiqued at the highest regards due to the undying love and affection fans have for the unforgettable. Oakland recording artist HeiR will be just as held accountable like everyone else on this project as sparks attention with the title, 2Pac’s HeiR. Many false prophets have tried to make the general public believe they are the next Tupac over the years and all have failed miserably. Will HeiR be an exception or fall to the waste side like every other imposter?

2Pac’s HeiR is an 8-track capsule project that by the rising Bay Area recording artist paying homage to fellow Bay Area 2Pac on all of his production. Radical, Thug, Poet, Visionary, Tupac is remembered for many different personalities, it’s always been difficult for fans to identify which side of the “Get Around” hitmaker they adore the most. HeiR looks to embody the same presence with the start of his globe-trotting career with this debut release.

Stream HeiR’s new mixtape, 2Pac HeiR below, courtesy of Datpiff:

Lyrically, HeiR executes an attention-grabbing resemblance of the late-icon via mimicking sound; however, matching the iconic’s lyrical prowess is quickly realized that HeiR doesn’t obtain. Finding it hard to stay the course of the track with work-in-progress offbeat wordplay. HeiR may be one of Tupac’s children but like most children, HeiR falls short emulating the greatness with rapping brainstorm of words but lacks the value in getting his point across on every track.

The project’s production is simply sampled productions from the iconic’s catalog of hits. Untouched and still impactful but known that HeiR just downloaded instrumental like any other rapper. Was hoping to get a few tricks, remixes, or rearranged mentions on the production side but really who messes with a classic right. A safe selection of beats as all are 2Pac’s biggest outputs; however, would have been interesting to see HeiR not only take the safe bet but gamble of more in-depth productions by the Bay Area-native. It would be interesting to hear HeiR tackle something from Pac’s Digital Underground sessions.

Starting off entertaining with the aggressive attitude, speedy delivery, and deep tone but the amusement quickly fades by the end of the mixtape with HeiR being unable to keep the momentum entire project. Confident and at times too cocky, HeiR gets lost in the sauce mid-way through the mixtape and at that point loses our interest, coming off more like a gimmick than a trailblazer. His execution lacks originality at best. Understand that it is easy for any artist to grab productions from their favorite artist and re-enact them with a talent show-esque performance for some quick attention. For HeiR, if you are eager to pursue a career in Hip-Hop then understand we love to be inspired by the icons but hate when people are actors with this craft and simply play an icon.

Show us what you got.
