Happy Loving Day Interracial Marriage Legalized 54 Years Ago

Happy Loving Day Interracial Marriage Legalized 54 Years Ago Today Eve and Maximillion Cooper

54 years ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized interracial marriage. It’s officially Loving Day.

On June 12, 1967, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously in favor of a young couple, Mildred Jeter Loving and Richard Loving and struck down state laws prohibiting interracial marriages as unconstitutional. A monumental case Loving v. Virginia.

Prior to 1967, any interracial marriages or sexual relations were defined as felonies. The laws also prohibited the issuance of a marriage license and the solemnization of weddings between mixed race couples. Citing Blacks and Whites, Blacks and Asians, Blacks and Native Americans and Blacks and Filipinos. Also prohibiting the officiating of such ceremonies.

In 1959 a year after their marriage, The Lovings were sentenced to one year in prison, for being together but the presiding Judge, Leon M. Bazile suspended their sentence on the condition that they would leave Virginia and not return together for a period of 25 years.

It wasn’t that long ago to think that 16 states out of this “Great Land of Liberty and Freedom” would need to deem interracial marriages legal just for people to love and live with their forever person.

I think of my grandparents Charles Constantino and Elenor Jane who married and left Sandusky, Ohio for being a mixed couple. They went to Boston, Massachusetts where the laws had been repealed since the late 1880’s. Grateful today to be standing on the shoulders of Mildred and John Loving. Since today is the historic anniversary of the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court decision a.k.a. Loving Day it’s only right to celebrate inclusion and diversity.

Here are a few of our favorite interracial couples in Hip Hop that continue to inspire love and diversity everyday. Love is love.

Today In Hip Hop History: Ruff Ryders’ Debut Album ‘Ryde Or Die Vol.1’ Dropped 22 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2021 04 27 at 7.56.36 PM

On this date in 1999, the label known as Ruff Ryders Entertainment dropped their first Full length studio release aptly titled Ryde Or Die Vol.1, which the label released alongside the Interscope imprint.

With production from the likes of Ruff Ryders in-house producer Swizz Beatz as well as DJ Clue, tracks like First Lady Eve’s “What Ya Want”, the hypnotic “Jigga My Nigga” featuring Mr. S Dot himself and the title track with the entire Ruff Ryders camp, which was an updated and upgraded version of the Hit Squad’s “Head Banger”, made this album a certified classic. The RIAA certification was the proof; the compilation LP was certified platinum by June of the same year. The Double R doubled up on the Ryde Or Die series in 2000, but it never saw near the success of its predecessor.

Salute to Dee Waah, Swizz, the entire Ruff Ryders camp, The L.O.X., Hov and everyone else who was a part of this important piece of Hip Hop history! Extra Special Salute to the Dog!!! DMX RIP

Eve Explains Why Her Partying Antics May Have Led to the End of Her Hit Show

eve 2003 tv series 94475f6d faf8 4d17 abf9 56498f20979 resize 750

Take us back to the early 2000s when dance songs were just becoming a thing, when baggy clothes were hot and black sitcoms were in style.

Speaking of black sitcoms, Eve sits down with Uncensored to tell how she believes her parting ways could have played a part in why her hit show, “Eve” came to an end. “Having my own sitcom was everything… it was pressure, it was fun, it was stressful, it was amazing,”  she said. “I was the youngest at the time of the cast, and a lot of them were just getting married, just buying their first house or like, just having babies. I was still going to the club trying to get to set at 9:00 a.m. Trying to get to a table read, which was…don’t do that, ever.”

Eve then goes on to further explain how adjusting to being a television actress was hard for her, coming from the rap star lifestyle. “When the show ended, it was definitely heartbreaking because at that time. We had done three seasons and we were family at this point. “I do believe a lot of it had to do with the fact that I was trying to kinda straddle both sides of my life. Still trying to hold on to kinda hanging out. And I was late a lot. That’s not cool, she stated.”

You know, I do think a lot of it had to do with my actions at that time, and I do think about it sometimes. When I look back on it, I’m like, wow. I don’t believe in regrets, but that is one time in my life where I feel like I wish I would have taken it a little more seriously than I did.”

Catch more of what Eve had to say in her episode of Uncensored on TV One.

Eve Reveals She Was ‘Devastated’ After Dr. Dre Dropped Her for Eminem

Eve Reveals She Was Devastated After Dr. Dre Dropped Her for Eminem

The Ruff Ryders Chronicles is giving Hip Hop fans a behind-the-scenes view at one of the Hip-Hop’s most underrated rap groups, including the come up of their First Lady, Eve.

The “Who’s That Girl” rapper was a former stripper in Philadelphia and was blessed with a chance to fly to Los Angeles to record a demo, and the tape ended up in Dr. Dre’s radar, and the rest is history.

Eve inked a deal with the Aftermath Records but apparently the rapptress’ working relationship with the West Coast legend came to an abrupt end with no warning. “I would literally show up to studio sessions that I wasn’t supposed to be at where I knew Dre was gonna be and be like, ‘So, when am I recording? When are you gonna put me in a song? What’s going on?’ I think he got sick of that and then I got dropped eight months later… I was devastated.”

Eve went back to her mother’s home disappointed but what she didn’t know was that her manager was handling a deal with Ruff Ryders. Everything worked out and the connection with the New York Group ended up lighting up Eve’s career on fire, eventually leading the rapper to win her first Grammy Award, which marked the first Grammy for the group.

Can you imagine the Ruff Ryders without the pitbull in a skirt? We surely cant.

BET Premieres Upcoming Ruff Ryders Docu-Series Coming This Fall

dmx gq interview ruff ryders anthem

“What y’all really want?” The Ruff Ryders docu-series is coming soon.

The BET Awards was more than a celebration of the network’s 40th birthday. It was a premiere for a number of future projects that Black Entertainment Television is set to produce, including the 5-part Ruff Ryders docu-series. The DMX-led group is one of Hip-Hop’s most iconic collectives.

Founded by Joaquin, Darin, and Chivon Dean, the late ’90s and early 2000s were impacted by the Ruff Ryder movement. Their roster included the dynamic DMX, The LOX (Jadakiss, Styles P, and Sheek Louch,) Eve and Swiss Beatz. Beatz was behind the boards of a number Ruff Ryder hits and is the nephew of the labels’ founders.

The 5-part series will follow the rise and influence of the historic Hip-Hop group. From the versatility of DMX to Ruff Ryders first lady, Eve, the group set a standard on how to have success as a rap posse.

The Ruff Ryders series to set to premiere this September on BET. Catch the full trailer below.

In addition to posting the quality time she spent with her family during the day, Bardi decided to share a snippet of a song she wrote during her pregnancy, back in 2018. In the unreleased song, Cardi raps over Eve’s classic hit, “Love Is Blind,” and dedicates the lyrics to her daughter. She raps,

“Little life growing inside of me, with the whole world has been dying to see, I just wanted a little time for me, this is Invasion of Privacy.”

The song was definitely recorded during the IOP sessions, but it did not make the cut. The year was quite eventful for the Bronx native. In addition to her pregnancy, she released her debut studio album on April 6th, 3 months prior to giving birth. The album went on to win the Grammy for Best Rap Album. In addition, she earned a nod for Album of Year.

Invasion of Privacy is certified triple platinum and is the most-streamed album by a female rapper in Spotify’s history.

Rapsody ‘Eve’ Album to be Taught at UNC-Chapel Hill and Ohio State University

Rapsody received news of what she calls “one of the highest honors” on Wednesday when two college professors revealed plans to teach her latest album at their universities.

Ohio State University and Rap’s hometown school UNC-Chapel Hill have both made available a course that will break down Rapsody’s sophomore LP Eve in English courses focusing on womanist philosophy.

“One of the highest honors is to create art for the culture and have it taught in our educational institutions,” the 3-time Grammy-nominated rapper wrote on Instagram.

Rapsody’s Eve album was written as a dedication to Black women with every song titled after a prominent woman in Black history like “Nina” named after singer/activist Nina Simone, “Oprah” after Journalist/Businesswoman Oprah Winfrey and “Michelle” after former First Lady Michelle Obama.
