Earl Sweatshirt, now 25, stands heads and shoulders above many of his peers as a lyricist, a feat he achieved early on as a teenager. Now aiming to release his fourth studio project titled Feet Of Clay, the California wordsmith aims to solidify his rightful place as one of the elite writers in Hip-Hop.

Coming just about a year after the excellent Some Rap Songs album, Feet Of Clay is a seven-song project consisting of production from Alchemist and East Oakland producer Overkast along with the talented Los Angeles beatmaker, Swarvy also placed his touch on the release according to this tweet.

Joining the rapper born Thebe Kgositsile on Feet Of Clay are Charlotte rapper and Howard University neuroscience student MAVI, who just released the stellar Let The Sun Talk and hails from Sweatshirt’s dense-rap lineage along with MIKE of The SLUMs crew. The elusive and mysterious Mach-Hommy repays the feature favor as well after Earl appeared on the Haitian rapper’s Wap Konn Jòj! project from this past summer.

Check out Earl Sweatshirt’s Feet Of Clay tracklist below. The album drops, Thursday, 9:00PM PST/Friday, 12:00AM EST.

Earl Sweatshirt Smacks Phone From Fan’s Hands, Vince Staples Offers Fade Appointment

2019 Buku Music + Art Project - Day 2

They don’t say “never meet your heroes” for nothing. Earl Sweatshirt reminded a fan of this when he shut down their attempt to record him without his permission.

In a now-deleted tweet, a group of dudes walking around New Orleans French Quarter spotted Sweatshirt wandering around near them and when they attempted to capture him on video he immediately shut them down by laying the smacketh down on their phone. The fan in questioned captioned the video with “When you want a pic with one of your favorite rappers since day 1 and he’s a dick.”

#EarlSweatShirt slaps phone out of fan hand! 👊🏽👊🏽👋🏽👋🏽😡😡

A post shared by 100K Records (@100kmedia_) on

Vince Staples peeped the post and let the fan know that if he wanted that smoke he can provide the lighter.

Like we previously mentioned the fan deleted his tweet after Vince offered his assistance in setting up a second meeting. We guess he thought better of it and just decided to take the “L” on this one.

Fair or foul?

Earl Sweatshirt’s New Album Spells DOOM For His Generation (Video)

Late in 2018, Earl Sweatshirt released his fourth album, simply-titled Some Rap Songs. The LP showcases Earl’s sharp wordplay and conversational delivery. Moreover, the 24-year-old also shows that he is evolving as a producer. He favors carefully-crafted loops instead of the kind of grabby production that can detract from the lyrics. In many ways, Earl continues to show that he is writing his own chapter while taking a page or two out of the MF DOOM playbook. Both artists have addressed personal losses in their art. Between KMD’s Black Bastards and Operation Doomsday, DOOM lost his brother, Subroc. He dealt with the pain through reinvention, both as a writer and a producer. Years later, the music that the brass at KMD’s label seemed hesitant to release appeared to be wildly ahead of its time. This also may be true of Earl, a year after losing his father and reportedly on his way out from his deal. Step Inside The Mind of Earl Sweatshirt With A Wildly Diverse DJ Set (Video) In conjunction with the Tan Cressida/Columbia Records release, the double-threat born Thebe Kgositsile released an eight-minute film co-written and co-directed by Terence Nance and Naima Ramos-Chapman of HBO’s Random Acts Of Flyness. That visual work, Nowhere, Nobody complements the project, serving as both a visual companion and also a worthy entry point, given that six songs are featured. It features scenes self-narrated by the Los Angeles, California-based artist lyrical lever, intertwined with a brief biography of his late father, South African poet Bra Willie. Several songs of the album play against humble scenes engulfed with the kind of artistic confusion that only Earl Sweatshirt can deliver. The opening sequence finds Sweatshirt enthusiastically coaching a youth basketball team. The video eerily floats through scenes of Thebe deconstructing art pieces. The album’s opening track, “Shattered Dreams,” serves as the soundtrack as still sculptures of the heads and torsos of Black women and men mirrored with their live counterparts are gently brushed of vines and wiped clear of debris by the son of the fallen poet. The short film continues with Thebe resting still in a bath tub, after being wiped down by a woman. The video concludes with the scene switching to Earl delivering the album intro with captured shots of blood seeping through the ceiling. The power of Kgositsile’s lyrics rumble the room of the rapper in an alternate dimension, causing a picture of a young Thebe and his father to fall and shatter. After the recitation of “Shattered Dreams,” the short film comes to an end with a round of applause visualized by a scene of a white casket filled with sculptures of severed hands draped with the flag of South Africa, an inventive funeral march for the respected Keorapetse Kgositsile. Poet Keorapetse Kgositsile, Earl Sweatshirt’s Father, Has Died Although DOOM has never been one to get quite so deep with the visuals, the listening aesthetics are similar. These are both artists out of innovative groups early in their career. Each has been disenchanted with the label system and searched for the space to make Hip-Hop on their terms, without distractions or gimmicks. Take “Nowhere2Go,” one of the songs featured. Earl’s word choices and contrasts are not unlike the Masked Villain. “Even when I hit a low / I still give thanks to the Most High / I can’t do favors no more / If you lame and you broke, and you waiting for co-sign / I take a plate to go / Bread I could break with bro / Noose on my chain is gold / Tell me how you been faking the whole time? / That’s a surveiller’s goal / These ni**as be playing for both sides.” The intricate rhyme pattern, compound bars, and effortless delivery complete the comparison. Some Rap Songs is filled with these illustrations. Earl Sweatshirt is an industry outcast, who channels pain, loss, and indifference into making some incredible Hip-Hop. Tyler, the Creator Protégé: 5 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt

Earl Sweatshirt

It’s been a while since Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt has released an album, with the rapper spending a portion of his time off the radar, away from the paparazzi. He has stayed relatively quiet on social media as well, and this summer the former Odd Future member also cancelled several concerts while citing his motives as an ongoing fight with anxiety and depression.

However, Earl got back on stage at the Mac Miller: A Celebration of Life concert. Soon and after that he was featured on Vince Staples’ new album FM! with (basically) his own track  “New earlsweatshirt – Interlude”. Now that he’s returned to the spotlight, here’s 5 Things You (Probably} Didn’t Know About Earl Sweatshirt.

***EDIT (11/13/18): On Thursday, Earl dropped music of his own for the first time since 2016 with a single titled “Nowhere2go” after it was previewed on an Instagram announcement post the night before.***

1. Earl has teased new music.

Last week, the musician whose real name is Thebe Kgositsile posted a mysterious video on Twitter. The 27-second clip, which samples Tommy Davidson as “cream corn” from the movie Black Dynamite, is leading fans to conclude it as a teaser for a new release. Rumors of an upcoming drop have been circulating for months now, as Earl tweeted but quickly deleted “The vibes… SRS COMING SOON THE WAIT IS ALMOST OVER !!” back in September.

2. His last album came over three years ago.

In March of 2015, Earl released I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside. It fared extremely well with critics, even reaching #12 on the Billboard 200 and selling 30,000 copies in its debut week. Following this, the extended-play Solace was released. However, since then, he has not put out a single album. With that being said, fans are really hoping that Monday’s tweet will lead to a new piece of art!

3. It’s no surprise his lyrical content is so smooth.

Earl Sweatshirt’s father is renowned South African poet Keorapetse Kgositsile, who passed away in January of 2018. Their relationship seemed a bit rocky throughout the years though (he rapped of missing his dad after not seeing him for years on the hit song “Chum”, and Keorapeste said in 2011 that he hadn’t heard his son’s music while also denouncing new hip-hop), but the death still affected Earl greatly. Anyway, great minds and strong creative abilities clearly run in the family. Rest in peace, Mr. Kgositsile.

4. Thebe has tried his hand at acting, too.

Although the rapper hasn’t performed in quite a few years now, he once was active in front of the camera. He was on VICELAND’s Party Legends with Na’kel Smith, BET’s 106 & Park, and the infamous Loiter Squad for a total of twenty episodes. Produced by Adult Swim, it featured him, Tyler, the Creator, Taco Bennett, and others. Earl’s most recent appearance came on Traveling the Stars: Action Bronson and Friends Watch ‘Ancient Aliens’, back in 2016. Whether he’ll return to this field is yet to be determined, but we do know that he knows how to make people laugh.

5. He’s collaborated with some fantastic artists.

Despite being just 24 years old now, Earl Sweatshirt is a veteran within hip-hop and has worked with some of the game’s best rappers. Some of this can be accredited to the fact that he’s been active since 2010, when his career began. The late Mac Miller featured him on “I’m Not Real” as well as two other tracks, and Earl has been on pieces by Ab-Soul, Action Bronson, SpaceGhostPurrp, Thundercat, Vince Staples and obviously those of old OFWGKTA members such as Frank Ocean.
