The cover features a throne-crowned wearing Kung Fu Kenny with his family and a gun in his back waist-band, holding his oldest child, while his wife, Whitney Alford, sits on the bed, holding their infant child with the impression of breastfeeding. The cover arrives several days after Lamar released the upcoming album’s single “The Heart Part 5” which has received huge attention due to the visual’s homage to the likes of O.J. Simpson, Kanye West, Jessie Smollett, Will Smith, and the late-Kobe Bryant and Nipsey Hussle.

Kendrick’s latest visual, released last Sunday evening (May 9), samples the 1976 Marvin Gaye–classic “I Want You” and has already accumulated over 17 million views-and-growing on YouTube in two days. The song and video have received praise from all over pop culture and entertainment. “The Heart Part 5” is set to appear on Kendrick’s forthcoming fifth studio album — his first album release in five years.

Written by Vernon Chatman, the film’s concept is about a young black man who is a slave reenactor at a living history museum and discovers that his girlfriend’s ancestors once owned his own ancestors as slaves. “On behalf of Paramount Pictures and the wider ViacomCBS family, we look forward to ushering in the first theatrical collaboration from these creative visionaries, and galvanizing audiences worldwide around a powerful storytelling experience,” Paramount Pictures president and CEO Brian Robbins says about the project.

Paramount will handle theatrical distribution, home entertainment, and TV licensing rights on the project, with Paramount Plus acquiring streaming rights. While Lamar and Free’s first film, South Park’s Stone and Parker bring five-time Emmy-winning experience. The duo recently inked a new deal with MTV that sees South Park air through to season 30. Dave Free Parts Ways With TDE To Start New Venture

TDE President Dave Free has reportedly stepped down from his position.

According to Rolling Stone, Dave Free stepped down several months ago in order to focus on a new venture on his own. Although Free is no longer a part of the label, that didn’t stop him from collaborating with TDE after introducing the latest signee Baby Keem.

In 2018, during an interview with Vibe, Free spoke about his position with TDE and plans to expand the label in 2019.

“We got a lot of new artists, we got REASON, we got other new things coming,” he said. “To us, it’s about replicating the success but also stretching our hands into as many fields as humanly possible. So all those big investors and all those big guys that wanna be with a winning team, come talk to TDE ‘cause we’re looking into a bunch of different fields.”

Dave Free also divulged that he planned on getting into film, which may explain his departure from the game-changing label he helped create.

“We’re getting heavy into the film game. I’m trying to get heavier into it. Kendrick [Lamar]’s trying to get heavier into it. A lot of the guys want to get more into the content creation game. We got a lot of new artists, we got REASON, we got other new things coming. To us, it’s about replicating the success but also stretching our hands into as many fields as humanly possible.”

Despite news of his departure, Dave Free and TDE have been tight-lipped about the exit with neither releasing a statement to confirm or deny the rumored split.

In a 2016 interview with Forbes magazine, Kendrick Lamar discussed how influential Dave Free was to his career and how the label operates more like a family than anything else.

“It’s more like working with a brother that just so happened to love what I do, too,” Lamar said. “So when you put these two individuals into creative spaces, it’s a different type of chemistry, it’s a different type of bond, it’s a bond that really can’t be broken, whether it’s in the studio or behind the camera. It’s like Voltron.”

Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith founded TDE more than a decade ago with Free introducing him to his high school classmate, Kendrick Lamar, shortly thereafter. The two went onto sign several groundbreaking artists including ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, REASON, Sza, SiR, and Baby Keem.
