Chicago PD Pin Third Murder Victim On King Von

Screen Shot 2022 08 18 at 7.59.27 AM

According to several confirmed reports, the Chicago Police Department has now added a third person to the list of murder victims who allegedly died at the hands of slain Chicago rapper Dayvon “King Von” Bennett.

Reports have confirmed that Von and his cohorts had beef with a local gang known as STL (abbreviated for St. Lawrence), to which Modell McCambry was connected, and it is reported that Von fired the fatal shot that killed McCambry back in 2012. There have been several different accounts from eyewitnesses about who killed McCambry. Still, the Chicago Police Department has attributed his murder to King Von instead of the other suspect in the killing, T-Roy.

King Von and T. Roy were best friends and have both been murdered since the 2012 shooting. This case marks the second murder that’s been attributed to King Von’s name since his untimely death in November 2020.

Justice For Juicy: Jussie Smollett Pleads Not Guilty, Again

Actor Jussie Smollett Returns To Court After New Grand Jury Indictment

Source: Nuccio DiNuzzo / Getty

The city of Chicago is trying to make good on its promise to make former Empire star Jussie Smollet pay for the media frenzy and money loss created around his 2019 claim that he was a victim of a hate crime attack.

On Monday (Feb. 24),  Smollett appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to six counts of disorderly conduct before Judge James Linn on a new indictment from earlier this month. The latest charges alleged Smollett made four separate false reports to Chicago police in the aftermath of the Jan. 29, 2019, incident near Smollett’s residence in Chicago’s Tony Streeterville neighborhood.

Dubbed as the most infamous disorderly conduct case in recent Chicago history, the trial began all over again with a new judge and a special prosecutor, Dan K. Webb; but after Webb was a no show twice due to falling ill, the trial was ultimately assigned to the latest official Judge James Linn.

In court, Smollett’s lawyers requested a delay in the arraignment due to filing paperwork with the Illinois Supreme Court regarding the case and a motion in Linn’s courtroom to dismiss the indictment on double-jeopardy grounds.

Prior to Webb’s dismissal from the proceedings, he noted that his reasoning for reopening the case, was that he considered “the extensive nature” of Smollett’s falsehoods, the massive amount of time and money Chicago police put into the investigation, and the strength of the evidence cited by State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s own prosecutors in bringing the original charges, according to Raw Story.

Not only did prosecutors drop charges without requiring Smollett to admit guilt, but he also left the courtroom that day having been given credit for two days of community service he had already performed, and he paid no restitution except forfeiting $10,000 in bond money — less than 10% of the approximately $130,000 the police spent on overtime in the case.

Although Linn did not delay the proceedings, the did opt to release Smollett on a $20,000 individual bond before ordering him to reappear in court on March 18.

Despite the new charges, Smollett’s attorney, Tina Glandian, had choice words for the Chicago police department and special prosecutors in the case adding that the new charges aren’t an attempt to find justice—but instead play politics.

“This indictment raises serious questions about the integrity of the investigation that led to the renewed charges against Mr. Smollett, not the least of which is the use of the same CPD detectives who were part of the original investigation into the attack on Mr. Smollett to conduct the current investigation, despite Mr. Smollett’s pending civil claims against the City of Chicago and CPD officers for malicious prosecution,” Tina Glandian said in a statement.

“After more than five months of investigation, the Office of the Special Prosecutor has not found any evidence of wrongdoing whatsoever related to the dismissal of the charges against Mr. Smollett,” Glandian continued. “Rather, the charges were appropriately dismissed the first time because they were not supported by the evidence. The attempt to re-prosecute Mr. Smollett one year later on the eve of the Cook County State’s Attorney election is clearly all about politics not justice.”

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Peeved At Jussie Smollett Getting Off

After arrests for shootings in Chicago, the road to justice is long and uncertain: âItâs not comforting at allâ

Source: Chicago Tribune / Getty

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel spoke forcefully to the press after news broke that the charges Jussie Smollett faced in his alleged hate crime case were dropped. Calling the instance a “whitewash of injustice,” Mayor Emanuel doubled down on Good Morning America and said the Empire actor received special treatment.

Page Six reports:

Emanuel continued his onslaught of criticism of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office for their abrupt decision to dismiss the hoax hate crime case against the “Empire” star, dropping all 16 felony charges against him.

“This looks like because he’s an actor, a person of influence, he got treated differently than anybody else,” the mayor said on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Emanuel, however, stopped short of calling for an investigation into prosecutors for the sweetheart deal that he blasted as a “whitewash of justice” on Tuesday.

In response, many are calling Emanuel to the carpet for his lax attention to the police shooting death of Laquan McDonald.

All Charges Dropped Against Jussie Smollett AKA The “Gay Tupac” #JussieSmollett

Jussie Smollett Returns To Court To Enter Formal Plea

Source: Pool / Getty

In a bizarre twist in the alleged hate crime attack suffered by Jussie Smollett in Chicago, all charges against the Empire actor have been suddenly dropped Tuesday (March 25). The so-called “Gay Tupac” will no longer face the 16 counts of falsified reports of the crime, and Twitter has all the commentary about the matter.

What follows is a statement from Smollet’s legal team,Tina Glandian and Patricia Brown Holmes:

Today, all criminal charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped and his record has been wiped clean of the filing of this tragic complaint against him. Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify on January 29. He was a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public causing an inappropriate rush to judgment.

“Jussie and many others were hurt by these unfair and unwarranted actions. This entire situation is a reminder that there should never be an attempt to prove a case in the court of public opinion. That is wrong. It is a reminder that a victim, in this case Jussie, deserves dignity and respect. Dismissal of charges against the victim in this case was the only just result.

Wow.

Reactions to the news have been swift and we’ve collected much of that below.

Chicago PD Denies Reports Claiming Jussie Smollett Attack May Have Been Staged

Chicago’s ABC 7 has had the internet in an uproar after reporting that police were investigating whether or not Jussie Smollett’s January attack was staged—by the Empire actor, himself. You can take the report with a grain of salt, however, as authorities are speaking out to say that’s not at all the case.

“Multiple sources tell @ABC7Chicago Eyewitness News Jussie Smollet[sic] and the 2 men who are being questioned by police staged the attack – allegedly because his character was being written out of the show Empire,” Rob Elgas, a reporter and anchor for ABC 7, tweeted.

But Chicago PD Chief Communications Officer Anthony Guglielmi has denied ABC 7’s statements. “We have no evidence to support their reporting and their supposed CPD sources are uninformed and inaccurate,” Guglielmi wrote on Twitter. Empire producer 20th Century Fox also denied the reports in a statement, saying (first of all!) they have no intention of axing the Empire star. “The idea that Jussie Smollett has been, or would be, written off of Empire is patently ridiculous” 20th Century Fox stated, according to Vulture, adding “He remains a core player on this very successful series and we continue to stand behind him.”

The New York Times reports that two brothers are currently being questioned in connection to the crime—and one of them allegedly appeared on Empire. We will continue to keep you updated as this story unravels.

The reported attack on Empire actor Jussie Smollett is still under investigation, and Chicago police have since produced a video that may aid the case. In the surveillance footage, two persons of interest are seen in the clip and are thought to have been near where the alleged hate crime against Smollett took place.

The Blast reports:

“Police detectives have located surveillance cameras that show potential people of interest in the alleged assault and battery that was reported,” Chicago PD said in a statement regarding the investigation.

The police say, “While the video footage does not depict an assault, the individuals pictured are seen in the vicinity” of where the incident went down.

Officials are now going through the video and putting together a sample to hand out to the public in the hopes of identifying the possible suspects.

As we reported, police have been combing the area near Smollett’s luxury high-rise apartment ever since he claims to have been attacked in a racial and homophobic-fueled tirade.

In a screen grab from the surveillance video, two men in dark clothing are seen near the location of the attack but police aren’t saying just yet that they are suspects.

Stars have been rallying around Smollett, who appeared to be on the mend based on released photos of him recovering in a local hospital.

Former Cop Jason Van Dyke Sentenced To Prison For The Killing Of Laquan McDonald

Late in the evening of October 20, 2014, 17-year-old Laquan McDonald was fatally shot by police officer Jason Van Dyke in Chicago, Illinois. According to reports, McDonald was seen behaving unpredictably while walking and reportedly carrying a knife. In the events that ensued, Van Dyke shot McDonald 16 times, emptying the clip.

Early on, no charges were filed. Thirteen months after Laquan’s death, the Chicago Police Department released the officer’s dash cam video of the event after public demand, especially from activist William Calloway. The footage showed McDonald, knife in hand, walking in the opposite direction from the police, and in a non-threatening manner when he was shot to death. That same day, November 24, 2015, Jason Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder.

Protests ensued and continued through March of 2016. Chance The Rapper mentioned McDonald’s killer on Saturday Night Live in late 2015. “I’ve been waiting all week. I’ve been waiting all night. Jason Van Dyke,” he sang. “Had to say something on Saturday; see you at church on Sunday.

Just under three years after McDonald’s death, the 40-year-old Van Dyke was found guilty of second-degree murder on October 5, 2018. He was the first Chicago patrolman in 50 years to be found guilty of murder. On Friday (January 18), Van Dyke was then sentenced for six years, nine months. The former officer was also charged with 16 counts of aggravated battery, the same number of times he shot the teenager. “[Sentencing someone] is not pleasant, and this is not easy,” Cook County Judge Vincent Gaughan said upon the order. “I assume that 100% of everybody is going to be disappointed.” Calloway, the activist who demanded the release of the dash cam footage, expressed his disapproval regarding the length of the sentence.

DJ Yella Says Police Violence Won’t Stop Until A Cop Goes To Jail For A Long Time

The sentence marks a rare occasion when an American police officer is sent to prison, especially for the killing of a Black civilian. Many other high-profile murders, including Michael Brown,  have ended without incarceration or penalty. In the trial, other state witnesses spoke about Van Dyke’s brutal police tactics in the past. There were six witnesses in total. Van Dyke’s wife claims she lost her job because of the events, and fears for her husband’s safety behind bars.

Laquan McDonald’s murder further brought to light the previously darkened, shadowed corners of Chicago’spolice force. As a result of Laquan’s case, three Chicago officers were charged with conspiracy to cover up Laquan’s death. The officers were later acquitted. However, this tragedy brought lasting change to the Windy City. The Times reports, “Protesters marched repeatedly in the weeks that followed, forcing out the Chicago police superintendent, successfully pushing for policy changes and weakening Mayor Rahm Emanuel, whose administration had fought to keep the video out of public view.”

Later, Laquan McDonald’s murder and the subsequent indictment of three Chicago police officers led to a more extensive investigation conducted by the United States Department of Justice against the Chicago Police Department. After it’s investigation was completed, The United States Department Of Justice determined that the Chicago Police Department regularly participated in, and aggravated, a culture of violence. According to its website, “The Justice Department announced today [Friday, January 13, 2017] that it has found reasonable cause to believe that the Chicago Police Department (CPD) engages in a pattern or practice of using force, including deadly force, in violation of the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution. The department found that CPD officers’ practices unnecessarily endanger themselves and result in unnecessary and avoidable uses of force. The pattern or practice results from systemic deficiencies in training and accountability, including the failure to train officers in de-escalation and the failure to conduct meaningful investigations of uses of force.”

“Since the shooting, the department has launched new de-escalation training, made it policy to release nearly all video of police-involved shooting incidents within 60 to 90 days, and required all officers to wear body cameras,” according to USA Today. “The Illinois Attorney General’s Office sued the city in federal court in 2017 to implement a court-monitored consent decree aimed at ensuring reforms in the police department are carried out. State and city officials settled on parameters of the decree last year. It includes requirements that the police department publish use-of-force data monthly, tighten policy on the use of Tasers and document each time officers draw their weapons.”

As for the sentencing of Jason Van Dyke after all these years, Pastor Marvin Hunter, McDonald’s great uncle, addressed the ruling by saying, “I want to say to everyone – everyone in the city of Chicago and across this country – that if they had sentenced him [Jason Van Dyke] to one minute [of prison time], it is a victory. It is a victory because what has happened in this courtroom today has never happened in the history of this county and it sets a precedent and it sends a strong message to unjust police officers that now you can and will go to jail if you’re caught lying, if you’re caught breaking the law.”

Chicago Cops Question 2 Women Alleged To Be Under R. Kelly’s Control

Protestors Rally In Support Of Sex Abuse Survivors At R Kelly's Chicago Studios

An anonymous tip helped lead police to the Trump Tower home of R. Kelly in Chicago where he was allegedly holding two women hostage. Police questioned the women, who both say they are with the R&B singer under their own wishes and no charges were filed.

TMZ reports:

The Cook County State Attorney’s Office got a tip Friday that Kelly was at his Trump Tower residence with the women … and he was holding them against their will. We’re told cops raced to the property and made contact with R. Kelly and the women.

Our sources say 5 officers came to the home and ordered Kelly into the other room while they questioned the women. According to Chicago PD, both women said they were at the residence voluntarily and nothing untoward was going on. Police then left without incident.

We’re told the 2 women were Joycelyn Savage and Azriel Clary, both of whom have maintained they were with R. Kelly voluntarily, despite their parents’ strong claims they were the victims of brainwashing.

Chicago prosecutors are asking any of Kelly’s alleged victims to step forward as they continue to build a case around the explosive claims raised in the recent Lifetime docu-series, Surviving R. Kelly.
