Anthony Mackie Has A Problem With The Lack of Diversity In Marvel Studios

Though the Marvel Cinematic Universe might’ve put Anthony Mackie on the Hollywood map and endeared him to millions of comic book fans across the globe, it seems like the Black Mirror actor has a bone to pick with the house that Stan Lee built.

In a recent interview with Variety, Mackie revealed that though he’s happy with his current lead role as The Falcon in the MCU’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, he told Daveed Diggs that he does have a problem with the lack of diversity behind the scenes at Marvel Studios. After asking Mackie about his “interactions” with the current Black Lives Matter movement, the Marvel star revealed that he’d like to see some changes made in the industry he currently thrives in.

“When ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ comes out, I’m the lead,” Mackie said. “When ‘Snowpiercer’ came out, you’re the lead. We have the power and the ability to ask those questions. It really bothered me that I’ve done seven Marvel movies where every producer, every director, every stunt person, every costume designer, every PA, every single person has been white.”

He did acknowledge that the classic Black Panther had Black people at the helm of the film, but that in itself was rather racist in his opinion.

“We’ve had one Black producer; his name was Nate Moore,” Mackie continued. “He produced ‘Black Panther.’ But then when you do ‘Black Panther,’ you have a Black director, Black producer, a Black costume designer, a Black stunt choreographer. And I’m like, that’s more racist than anything else. Because if you only can hire the Black people for the Black movie, are you saying they’re not good enough when you have a mostly white cast?”

Though Mackie dreams of seeing more diversity on the set of big budget Marvel productions, he does concede that the most important part of any project is to get the “best person for the job.”

“Even if it means we’re going to get the best two women, we’re going to get the best two men. Fine. I’m cool with those numbers for the next 10 years. Because it starts to build a new generation of people who can put something on their résumé to get them other jobs. If we’ve got to divvy out as a percentage, divvy it out. And that’s something as leading men that we can go in and push for.”

The man does have a point.

Still, we wouldn’t be surprised if The Falcon doesn’t make it out of Marvel’s Phase 4 given his criticism of their behind the scene practices. Just sayin.’ Props for speaking his mind though.

Altered Carbon 2’s Anthony Mackie Talks Shakespeare, Punching People In The Face [Video]

Anthony Mackie seamlessly stepped into the role of Takeshi Kovacs on Netflix’s sci-fi hit Altered Carbon. The renowned actor has filled big shoes before (see: Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that shied he was gifted), and he was up to the task.

In Altered Carbon, hundreds of years in the future the human race can essentially live forever, if they can afford it, thanks to “stacks” that serve as their soul’s hard drive that can be placed in new bodies aka “sleeves.” Mackie portrays Takeshi Kovacs, the last Envoy, warriors/terrorists out to stop the abuse of the aforementioned technology.

While portrayed by actor Joel Kinnaman in the first season, Mackie takes up the mantle in the re-up (with actor Will Yun Lee reprising the role of the OG Kovac).

“Just staying true to the character [Will Yun Lee] had created as the original Takeshi,” Mackie told Hip-Hop Wired of how he approached the role. “I didn’t want to change it up and make him something completely different. There is a through-line that’s supposed to go through all these characters. So I was trying to stay true to that but still put my own touches on it.”

The exciting story packs plenty of action amidst engaging drama.

“I equate it to Shakespeare, this is a futuristic Romeo & Juliet,” says Mackie, whose sentiment was echoed by co-stars Dina Shihabi (“Dig 301”) and Chris Conner (“Poe”), who ably portray AIs (artificial intelligence) in the series.

But a Black man packing a mean punch, in the future, is part of the reason we dug season 2.

Says Mackie, “When I watched those Blaxploitation movies like Shaft, even Coffy, Dolemite, movies like that—when I started my career when people would ask who do you want to be when you make, I was like, ‘Wesley Snipes.’ So to be able to do this and really live out my dream of punching people in the face makes me very happy.

Altered Carbon 2 is streaming on Netflix right now.

After endearing himself to comic book fans across the globe as the Falcon in Marvel’s The Avengers, Mackie is set to continue his arse kickin’ ways in the highly anticipated second season to Netflix’s hit series Altered Carbon. Starring as the “re-sleeve” of Takeshi Kovacs (played by Koel Kinnaman in the prior season), the preview clip features Kovacs in his new skin (Mackie) while guns and explosions fill in the rest of the teaser.

Fans have been eagerly waiting for two years to see how Netflix continues to properly adapt Richard K. Morgan’s original 2002 cyberpunk novel to film, so they’d better not f*ck this up after a stellar first season.

Peep the teaser trailer below and let us know if you’ll be checking the second season to Altered Carbon when it drops on February 27.

Anthony Mackie Got Divorced On The Lee-Low

"The Adjustment Bureau" New York Premiere

Look out ladies, Anthony Mackie is back on the market. Wait, do y’all care? Ok, just letting y’all know.

According to TMZ, Captain America’s sidekick (no shots) and his childhood sweetheart turned wife, Sheletta Chapital have quietly divorced after filing for the separation in 2017 after three years of wedded bliss. For a couple that’s been together as long as they have, we’re surprised the marriage really didn’t last long. Hopefully it has nothing to do with that Black Mirror episode in which he and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II had a next level love affair. That’ll make some people feel a ways.

Still, it seems like the split was amicable as they didn’t wanna to make a big deal out of the separation.
