EXIT of the DAY: Exit 249 on I-85 to: Atlanta, Georgia Martin Luther King Junior was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15th,1929. What with the segregated South and Jim Crow Laws, King experienced racism from an early age. Those uncomfortable events compelled him to a life of activism. After matriculating into Morehouse College at only age 15 he earned a post grad doctorate in Theology before becoming a pastor in Alabama. Like Frederick Douglass a hundred years before, King was an inspired orator. King gave hundreds of moving speeches. Perhaps the most remarkable speech was his premonition of his own death. The speech evoked Moses telling the Children of Israel he had led them to the gates of the Promised Land but would not lead them into it. After Moses died, it was Joshua would lead the Israelites into the Holy Land. Said Martin one night in Memphis: “Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now. Because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life; longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, we will get to the Promised Land. So I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!” Martin’s life ended the very next day. But the work that he had accomplished changed the world. #MartinLutherKingJunior
