Janelle Monáe Accepts ‘Trailblazer Award’ at ‘Women in Music’ Awards

Android artist Janelle Monáe is having an incredible week and year. She received news that she was nominated for two Grammys including “Album of the Year” for Dirty Computer. Then, she received the “Trailblazer Award” at Billboard’s 13th annual Women in Music Awards last night in New York City.

“I’ve discovered the most difficult trail to blaze is the one that takes us inside of who we are, individually and as a whole,” Monáe, who revealed earlier this year that she is pansexual, told the audience during her acceptance speech. “Being a trailblazer is about diving into spaces unseen and undiscovered, which can be very exciting and frightening at the same time. By us walking in our truths, it can sometimes give the next person the courage to walk in theirs.”

Dirty Computer is a Monáe third LP and it’s another critically acclaimed body of work in her discography. The album features Pharrell Williams, Brian Wilson, and Zoe Kravitz.

Other honorees 2018 Women in Music included Ariana Grande (Woman of the Year), Cyndi Lauper (accepting the Icon award), Kacey Musgraves (the Innovator award), SZA (the Rule Breaker award) and Hayley Kiyoko (the Rising Star award)

SZA Honored at 13th Annual Women in Music Event

Words by: Symone Daniels

Earlier this week Billboard announced that they will honor SZA at the 13th annual Women in Music event in New York on December 6.

The “Love Glore” singer will be honored with the rule breaker, which definitely fits SZA’s style.  The award recognizes a female artist who use their music and platform to defy traditional industry expectations and advance a powerful message for young people.

Early this year SZA sparked  after she flirted with the idea of early retirement from music and said that her next album would be her last,

My world got so much smaller so fast. I have so much to write about. I feel like I’m in a cage,” she told Flaunt. She continued, “I’m making the best album of my life for this next album and I know that… because it’s going to be my last album” — but apparently she delivered the news with a smile, which suggested she may or may not be serious about quitting.

SZA has received multiple Grammy nominations, multi-platinum hits from her CTRL album which dropped in 2017.

Others to be honored at The Billboard’s Women in Music event include Kacy Musgraves and Hayley.
