Megan Thee Stallion, The Weeknd, Tyler Perry & More Named in TIME100 2020 List

TIME 100 2020

In a year marked by countless displays of racial inequality, a global pandemic, and a divided nation, it has been shaped by influential figures. TIME magazine names its annual 100 most influential pioneers, artists, leaders, icons, and titans, who stand tall in fields of entertainment, sports, racial justice and more. This list includes musical figures such as Megan Thee Stallion and The Weeknd.

The Houston rapper has enjoyed a breakout year after scoring two Billboard Hot 100 No. 1s with “Savage” and “WAP.” In her TIME tribute, Taraji P. Henson defined Megan as the “epitome of tenacity.” After suffering familial losses in her recent past, she finds the means to persevere. In the midst of success, she experienced domestic violence after being shot in July. This incident did not phase, nor stop her momentum.

“Megan’s got a plan that’s much bigger,” said the Emmy award-winning Henson. “And we got her. I just want her to keep winning.”

The Weekend recently broke the record for most consecutive weeks (28) with a song in the top 5 of Billboard Hot 100’s. With the success of his latest hit, the streak is more than likely to extend. During his VMA Award acceptance speeches, The Weeknd solemnly gave thanks, but made it a priority to shed light on the countless acts of racial injustices displayed against Breonna Taylor and Jacob Blake. Taylor, an EMT essential worker, was murdered in her home of Louisville, KY by police officers following a “no-knock warrant.” Blake was shot 7 times by Kenosha, WI de-escalating a fight during a family event. He is now paralyzed from the waist down. The Weeknd’s decision to shed light on racial injustice during the VMAs shows his stance against systemic oppression.

TIME Magazine also includes actor Michael B. Jordan, Tyler Perry, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union, and more.

Jordan continues to diversify his acting portfolio, but his driving force is Black equity and representation in Hollywood. Back in July, he launched the #ChangeHollywood initiative in partnership with racial justice group Color For Change. In addition, he starred in Just Mercy through his Outlier Society Productions company.

Tyler Perry recently took home the Governor’s Award at the 2020 Emmys. According to Forbes, the New Orleans native became the next Black billionaire earlier this month. Oprah Winfrey’s tribute to Perry in TIME100 stated, “There’s no one else like him. In the entertainment business and in life. He’s a true visionary. A trailblazer.”

Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union found courage and strength in their children’s bravery. They supported their daughter’s journey, Zaya, after coming out as transgender earlier in February. The Wades set an example for parents everywhere to create and safe space in support of children.

2020’s TIME100 list is unprecedented and rightfully so with more names such as Naomi Osaki, Jennifer Hudson, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Dapper Dan, the founders of Black Lives Matter and more. Check out the full list below.

Founders Of Black Lives Matter Honored In TIME 100 Women Of The Year Issue

Glamour Women Of The Year 2016 - Everything But The House Green Room

Annually, TIME magazine publishes a special issue that highlights the “Person Of The Year” which it has done since 1999. For its 100 Women Of The Year programming, the magazine lists 100 honorees, naming the founders of Black Lives Matter for the year 2013.

TIME’s new undertaking for its 100 Women Of The Year lists a woman, or women each year from 1920 to 2019, giving them their own unique cover and story.

As the publication notes, Alicia Garza and Patrisse Cullors created the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter just after volunteer night watchman George Zimmerman was cleared of the killing of Black unarmed teenager, Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla. Along with Opal Tometi, the trio has since transformed BLM into a mighty movement dedicated to raising the awareness of Black women and men who are killed by police.

From TIME:

In July 2013, when George Zimmerman was acquitted of fatally shooting Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager, activist Alicia Garza posted on Facebook, ending with: “black people. I love you. I love us. Our lives matter.” Garza’s friend Patrisse Cullors added the hashtag, and #BlackLivesMatter went viral. Amid outrage, the three words became a rallying cry for thousands around the world protesting violence and systemic racism against black people. Today, thanks to the movement’s founders—Garza, Cullors and Opal Tometi it has grown into one of the most influential social-justice groups in the world.

Blame It On The Juice: Lizzo Named TIME’s Entertainer Of The Year

Q102's iHeartRadio Jingle Ball 2019

Lizzo has easily been the breakout star of 2019 and her years-long grind has paid off tremendously in the form of accolades, hit records, all while skirting past controversy. The Minneapolis by way of Detroit resident was named TIME‘s Entertainer Of The Year because, who else, really?

From TIME:

But I have to ask: Why was this the year—after nearly a decade on the road, performing shows for next to nothing, living in your car, being your own hype man—that you racked up more Grammy nominations than any other artist? “I’ve been doing positive music for a long-ass time,” she says. “Then the culture changed. There were a lot of things that weren’t popular but existed, like body positivity, which at first was a form of protest for fat bodies and black women and has now become a trendy, commercialized thing. Now I’ve seen it reach the mainstream. Suddenly I’m mainstream!” She laughs. “How could we have guessed something like this would happen when we’ve never seen anything like this before?”

She’s right. Lizzo does represent something new. Her sound is relentlessly positive and impossibly catchy: bangers that synthesize pop, rap and R&B, with hooks so sharp it feels like they’ve been in your brain forever. Her lyrics are funny, bawdy and vulnerable: reminders to dump whatever idiot is holding you back and become your own biggest fan. (Even the viral four-second clip of her in a rainbow dress saying, “Bye, bitch!” and cackling as she rides away on the back of a cart is superior to many artists’ entire musical output this year.) Attending a Lizzo concert feels like worshipping at the church of self-love, if your preacher was a pop star living joyfully in a big black body, delivering a sermon of self-acceptance that’s as frank as it is accessible. At a time when Instagrammers are shilling flat-tummy tea or pretending to eat a giant cheeseburger, Lizzo sells something more radical: the idea that you are already enough.

One of the world’s most iconic periodicals has released their yearly list and put heavy respeck on our culture. TIME has announced their “100 Next” and it spotlights some of our newest stars.

As spotted on High Snobiety TIME has released their annual list identifying the top 100 up and coming influential people in the country. The 2019 collective includes several familiar names including basketball player Zion Williamson, Lil Nas X, Bad Bunny, Keke Palmer, Desus and Mero and Coco Gauff.

Just like in previous editions guest contributors are enlisted to write the profiles on the selected candidates. Shaquille O’Neal discusses why Zion Williamson is the biggest addition to the NBA since LeBron James and Billy Ray Cyrus details why Lil Nas X is important to American culture.

The magazine details how they curated the issue. “With this issue, we launch the TIME 100 Next, a new list—part of an ongoing expansion of our flagship TIME 100 franchise—that spotlights 100 rising stars who are shaping the future of business, entertainment, sports, politics, science, health and more” wrote Editor-in-Chief Edward Felsenthal. “Although this focus lends itself to a younger group, we intentionally had no age cap—a recognition that ascents can begin at any age.”

Hate him or love him, 2019 is Lil Nas X’s year. He has landed one of the most coveted covers in popular culture.

The Atlanta native is the face of the August 26, 2019 edition of Time Magazine. This is noteworthy for a new recording artist considering that the periodical has historically featured political figures, world leaders and global persons of interest. Photographed by Kelia Anne, he is sporting an all red suit with matching cowboy hat. The background also mirrors his clothing making it a monochromatic piece.

Written by Andrew R. Chow, the story details X’s rise to fame via “Old Town Road” which took him from being a virtual unknown to Rap’s hottest new star. The single also broke the record for being the longest running No. 1 song in history knocking off Mariah Carey’s and Boyz II Men’s 1995 smash “One Sweet Day”. In the interview the 20-year-old discusses his rise to fame and eventually coming out as a gay man.
