Running Up the Score: Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ is Now 34x Platinum

US Judge Dismisses Claims From One of Michael Jackson's Sexual Abuse Accusers

No matter the number of sales your favorite artist is putting up, they can’t touch Michael Jackson.

The late icon is continuing to run up the score with his Thriller album. HotNewHipHop notes Thriller is officially triple diamond and some change. RIAA has certified the iconic album platinum for the thirty-fourth time.

The album featured the title track, which catches a run every Halloween, but also “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin.”

With a storied career to his name, Michael Jackson had another album created for him but ultimately went to Justin Timberlake. At the end of 2020, Pharrell Williams appeared on an episode of Drink Champs, and the show’s host, N.O.R.E., recalled a conversation where Skateboard P told him about sending beats to the King of Pop.

“You hit me and said, ‘Yo, I just sent Michael Jackson some beats!’” N.O.R.E. recalled. “You said to me, ‘He told me, “NOPE! I don’t think N.O.R.E. would rhyme on that. I was like, ‘My life is done!’”

Pharrell would reveal that a majority of Timberlake’s Justified album was created for Michael Jackson. The music was turned down by Jackson’s manager at the time John McClain.

“John McClain was his manager at the time. We sent him pretty much all the stuff you guys are hearing on the first Justified album — that’s all Michael stuff,” Pharrell noted. “All but one song, they were written for Michael. John McClain was like, ‘Man, Michael don’t want that s–t! He want the s–t you givin’ Noreaga!’”

You can hear that conversation in full below. Rest in peace to The King of Pop.

Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ Re-enters the Billboard Charts

Words by: Rashad Grove

When Michael Jackson made “Thriller” it turned out it would go on to have a life of its own. His vision to make a short film for this single is one of the most brilliant decisions in modern music.

Because of the iconic visual directed by John Landis, it catapulted the song into the stratosphere that allowed the album to reach unprecedented levels of success. “Thriller” is not just one of Jackson’s signature songs, but it is a classic track during the season of Halloween.

According to Billboard, the surge happened once again as “Thriller” re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 31, because of the uptick of downloads during Halloween season this year. The reentry of “Thriller” is the highest charting position of the horror song since it peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100 on March 3, 1984.

“Thriller” was the last single from album Thriller, composed by signwriting great Rod Temperton, and produced by the illustrious Quincy Jones. The song was a top 5 single and eventually going platinum selling over one million records.

“Thriller’s reentering the charts proves not only the enduring legacy and popularity of the song but the greatness of the King of Pop. Every October 31st, “Thriller” is the gift that keeps on giving.

In July, Nas low-key revealed he has a new album on deck.

“It’s another album that I already had been working on before [the one with] Kanye,” he told Martinez. “Since I did this, I gotta do something that goes into another direction a little bit. I’m finishing up the next one.” Nas confirms he’s done work with Swizz Beatz and RZA (“I’m a big Wu-Tang fan”). He also acknowledged the six-year gap between 2012’s Life Is Good and this summer’s Nasir, promising the wait for his next album won’t be as long. “All the time that went by, it’s dope because now I get to do it from another level,” he said. “I get to make music from an older point of view.” (Billboard)

Days prior, the Big Apple native shared a few of his all-time favorite hip-hop records.

“I’ll give you five that just come to my head. ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ by Public Enemy. No-brainer. Eric B. and Rakim, ‘Eric B. for President.’ ‘It Takes Two’ by Rob Bass and Easy Rock. Rest in Peace Easy Rock. ‘Children’s Story’ by Slick Rick. Wait, ‘Mona Lisa,’ Slick Rick. Wait. ‘La Di Da Di.’ Yeah. It’s either ‘Sucker MCs’ by Run-DMC, ‘It’s Like That,’ by Run-DMC, pick any Run-DMC. ‘Peter Piper.’ ‘My Adidas.’ I’ma go with ‘Sucker MCs’ by Run-DMC. That’s one of the most important records. Ever. Ever. Ever. And I could put ‘The Bridge’ in there. MC Shan and Marley Marl. Come on.”
