Q&A With Stoney Kev

What was the earliest hip hop memory you can recall?

My earliest Hip Hop memory that I can remember would definitely be the Def Jam Vendetta game. That was a big win for the culture.

When was it when you realized that rapping was for you?

Around freshman year in high school I knew I could go far with this. I just rapped different from everyone I knew.

Where did your moniker originate, Stoney Kev?

I got the name Stoney because of who I am and what I stand for. It’s about staying solid and true.

What was the title of your first track?  Is it still out?

My first track is called BRAGGIN its still out now on my soundcloud ‘Stoney Kev’. This was the song that stamped me as an artist.

How are you coping with this whole Covid 19 situation? Has it delayed any new music production by any chance?

COVID couldn’t stop my music if it wanted too. I write everyday and have my own recording studio so everything is in house and work gets done no matter the climate.

Please breakdown the creative process of your new album “The New World“.  Tell us a little about the album cover concept!

The New World explains the times were going through today. It’s crazy bc we started to collab before the pandemic but everything I spoke about was already starting to come to life. But when it came to writing and laying down records Gem would send me like four beats a week and Ny was on lockdown so I had nothing better to do than hit the stu and record. Now, that album cover clearly shows you ‘The New World’ and all that comes with it.

Who is your personal favorite all-time best Hip Hop producer?  Also, who is your ultimate MC collabo?

My all time favorite when it comes to producers would have to be Pete rock. And the ultimate Mc Collabo would deff be Nas And Salaamremi.

Any new music we can expect for the rest of 2020?

I’m ending 2020 with some positive Afro Bounce vibes. It’s been a rough year for some and a good year for others. So on November 3rd I’m releasing my 3rd project ‘Awele’ a name my mother gave to me meaning Luck. However, Gem and I plan on dropping a single every two weeks with a later project at the end of the year.

We have to ask, with all this social discourse and revolt, protesting and rioting, exposed police brutality toward blacks and BLM, how do you feel about this? We would love your perspective on the climate we are living in right now.

Black lives mattered before the movement. It’s not today that we realized police weren’t being held accountable for their actions. It’s not today where we’ve watched other blacks experience hardships due to the fact that their colored. We want to be heard, we want to feel protected, we want justice , and we want to finally be equal.

What is your definition of “underground hip hop”?

Underground hip hop to me is where you have a chance to listen to REAL rap, I mean records that you may never hear on radio.

Stoney Kev – “The New World” (Album Review)

Stoney Kev is an upcoming rapper from New York. Teaming up with industry titan and producer Gem en Eye, the two worked during the COVID-19 pandemic to create their brand new album “The New World”. Attempting to launch his career, will Stoney Kev be able to make the unforgettable project he needs?

Using his crafty lyrical ability to commentate on various world events, Stoney Kev shows he can be conscious hip hops next leader. Setting the tone with “War Money”, Kev challenges our government’s ability to take care of us and put the people in their best interest. Following this, What’s the Worth?” and “Radio World” continue to denounce the leaders responsible for the pain our society has endured. At the pinnacle of this, “Quarantine” takes the world’s current troubles and puts it into one unforgettable enraged anthem. Moving towards the more personal side of things, Kev captivates the listener by telling his life story on the cuts “Conditioning (Control)”, “Boundaries”, and “Runnin’”. “This Too Shall Pass” stuck out as the record’s highlight due to the rant Stoney goes on revolving around the themes of betrayal and optimism. Overall, the well-rounded skillset of Stoney Kev makes him “Fortunate” enough to capture fans and critics attention alike on the album.

Behind the boards, Gem en Eye creates a dynamic soundtrack to complement Stoney Kev’s illusive storytelling. Starting off with the excellent, “A New Age”, Gem takes a speech exposing the secrets of the world and mixes it into his well crafted hard-hitting beat. Past this, Gem en Eye’s soundtrack is multifaceted as it is changing at every corner. From the electro-soul sampled “What’s the Worth?” to the vibrant boom-bap sound of “Flatline”, there is so much Gem displays in this 36-minute offering. “Quarantine” pushes his intensity to new levels as its echoing drums and intoxicating base will make anyone listening feel like they are falling down a bottomless pit. “This Too Shall Pass”, “5g (The Fifth Gen)”, and “Boundaries” only continue to show Gem en Eye’s ability to create beautiful sounds. Working to the best of his abilities, Gem en Eye shows he is one of the most desirable producers in the underground scene right now.

In conclusion, “The New World” shows the promising start to a very talented rapper’s career. Having the ability to contribute powerful social commentary on enduring world issues is a special skill and early in his career, Stoney Kev already sounds like a veteran in this role. Additionally, Gem en Eye’s talent as a producer is seen at full throttle as he puts together one of the most compelling soundtracks I have heard recently. Going forward, I hope Stoney Kev and Gem en Eye continue to work together as it seems like they can turn out to be the next great rapper/producer duo.
