Akon on Slavery in America: 'You Just Gotta Let it Go'

Akon is currently in the process of building his $6 billion Akon City in Senegal and gave some insight into the history of slavery.

He claims Africa has moved on from the ugly past, unlike Americans. “In Senegal, we’ve kind of overcome the thought of slavery. We don’t even think about it,” said Akon. “The only time we think about it, honestly, is when we’re doing tours at Goree Island. Outside of that, people have lived and moved way beyond the slavery concept …”

The “Don’t Matter” rapper says Black Americans will benefit just by letting it go. “I think it’s the art of just letting the past go and moving towards the future,” he continued. “And I think, in the U.S., they have this stigma of just not letting go of the past and blaming the past on every mishap or, you know, disappointment. I think as long as you hold onto that past, there’s a lot of weight that you carry with you everywhere you go. It’s hard to move forward and move fast when you got a weight on your back. You just gotta let it go.”

Akon went on to say African-Americans need to “understand their worth” and realize that America will never give reparations. “They’re not sorry. They don’t care. It’s obvious,” he said, before encouraging Black people to move to Africa. “Do you want to stay here and continued to be treated this way? Or just go back home, where you’re not no longer the minority. You actually are the majority, and you control your destiny, your future, and your land … They just need to go … America did a good job at brainwashing. The moment you mention Africa, they start shaking. They don’t even know why.”

Mitch McConnell Stands Against Reparations, Says Civil Rights Legislation & Obama Cleared It Up

Senate Lawmakers Hold Press Availability After Weekly Policy Luncheons

Sen. Mitch McConnell issued a statement to reporters on Tuesday (June 18) stating that he believes the time for reparations for slavery to Black Americans is over. McConnell seemingly suggests that the passage of civil rights legislation and the election of President Barack Obama along with the difficulty of knowing who to pay gets the country off the hook.

The Hill
reports:

“I don’t think reparations for something that happened 150 years ago for whom none us currently living are responsible is a good idea,” McConnell said. “We’ve tried to deal with our original sin of slavery by fighting a civil war, by passing landmark civil rights legislation. We elected an African American president.”

McConnell was asked about reparations during a weekly press conference, which comes a day before the House Judiciary Committee will hold the first hearing on the issue in a decade.

“I think we’re always a work in progress in this country, but no one currently alive was responsible for that, and I don’t think we should be trying to figure out how to compensate for it. First of all, it would be pretty hard to figure out who to compensate. … No, I don’t think reparations are a good idea,” McConnell continued.

Right.

Reparations have been an important talking point among some of the Democratic Party presidential hopefuls, and the House Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties will hold a hearing today (June 19) on potentially passing legislation on reparations.

Madison’s Trust Elementary School (not pictured above) has issued an apology after third grade students were reportedly asked to pose as runaway slaves for gym. According to reports, about 10 families complained following the “lesson.”

“A Virginia elementary school apologized after criticism over a Black History Month lesson that instructed children to pose as runaway slaves,” the NY Post states. “The principal at Madison’s Trust Elementary School acknowledged the mistake after parents complained when teachers modeled a gym exercise after the Underground Railroad.”

Following the backlash, Principal David Stewart says the school will form an “equity/culturally responsive team,” adding “The lesson was culturally insensitive to our students and families. I extend my sincerest apology to our students and school community.”

Someone needs to be fired…periodt.

Kanye West is Set to Return to TMZ Live to Explain 13th Amendment Comments

Kanye West says he hasn’t full fledged his perspectives on annulling the thirteenth Amendment – which prohibited slavery, however he guarantees he’ll be prepared to clarify it when he shows up Monday on TMZ Live.

Ye began clarifying the starting point of the Constitution following his SNL performance to TMZ, yet the camera person pointed out that the thirteenth Amendment was passed long after the Constitution was endorsed, December 1865 to be exact. What’s more, the main force was not an establishing father, it was Abraham Lincoln.

Kanye West implied there may be proof Abraham Lincoln may have been Black although there’s no credible source to confirm this.

He tweeted an explanation of his thirteenth Amendment remark. “The 13th Amendment is slavery in disguise meaning it never ended.  We are the solution that heals.”

In the event that you’re wondering, here’s the means by which the thirteenth Amendment goes. “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”
