Questlove to Drop New Book Titled ‘Mixtape Potluck’

It seems like Ahmir Thompson aka Questlove is one of the busiest people in the world. He often claims he has 14 jobs. Not only is he the co-founder of the legendary Roots with Black Thought, but he’s the bandleader for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, a DJ, producer, designer, music educator, and bestselling and James Beard Award-nominated author. On top of all that, Quest is preparing for the release of his newest book Mixtape Potluck.

Besides music, Quest is a connoisseur of culinary delights. Another one of his books, Something To Food About: Exploring Creativity with Innovative Chefs, explores his love of food. He’s been hosting Food Salons—where the country’s best chefs cook for the star-studded guest list. At these salons, guests are always telling Questlove about their super-special secret recipes, which got him thinking: “Why not design an event where everyone makes that super-special secret recipe, all at once?” And everyone is invited.

According to the description of the book, in Mixtape Potluck (Abrams Image; October 15, 2019; U.S. $29.99; Hardcover), Questlove imagines the ultimate potluck dinner party. He invites more than fifty chefs, entertainers, artists, thought leaders, and musicians (full guest list below) and asks them to bring along their favorite recipes. He also pairs each guest with a song that he feels best captures their unique creative energy.

Quest has a slew of guests of his latest venture including Fred Armisen, Martha Stewart,  Nyesha Arrington Maya Rudolph Tariq Trotter, Ashley Graham, Kwame Onwuachi, Yvonne Orji, Limmy Fallon, Gabrielle Union, Q-Tip, Jarobi White, and many more.

Black Thought and Questlove Producing ‘Hip-Hop: Songs That Shook America’ On AMC

Legendary lyricists Black Thought and super-producer Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson of The Roots are executive producers of a six-part docuseries entitled Hip-Hop: The Songs That Shook America on AMC.

On each episode of this new series put emphasis on a trailblazing song that was critical to the transformation of American music and popular culture. The artists tell the stories behind the music that was made, revisit the influence the song had on them as artists, and dig up the socio-economic and cultural conditions that inspired the landmark work and gave voice to a generation.

According to the description of the network, “AMC Visionaries – Hip Hop: The Songs That Shook America is a six-part documentary series examining six songs based on the impact the song had on the time of its creation and beyond; we pick the hip-hop song that had the biggest impact both musically and culturally. In each episode, artists will deconstruct the song and walk us through the impact the song had on them personally. Along the way, we will take a deep dive into the socio-economic and cultural conditions that inspired the landmark work…and gave voice to a generation.”

The six classic songs that were chosen are “Jesus Walks” by Kanye West who challenged Hip-Hop and religion with his provocative song and video. “Alright” by Kendrick Lamar, who made Black protest music in the era of Black Lives Matter.  “Rock Box” by Run-DMC which helped launch Hip-Hop into the American mainstream. “Ladies First” by Queen Latifah challenged the misogyny of Hip-Hop and it became an anthem for Black women. “Elevators” by OutKast proved the South had something to say and push Hip-Hop past the geographical boundaries. “The Bridge” by Marley Marl and MC Shan a song that was created to pay homage to Queens becomes the first spark in one of the greatest battles in Hip-Hop.

Tommy Boy Records Responds To Boycott, Delays De La Soul’s Digital Release

The legendary record label Tommy Boy Records wants to clear its name by responding to the boycotts by Hip Hop icons such as Nas, Questlove and of course, De La Soul, who alleges that the record company with the B-boy logo robbed the trio of millions over the course of three decades.

According to a statement made to Variety Magazine, the label has decided to postpone the release of De La’s catalog amid the recent allegations.

“Because Tommy Boy has not had the opportunity to sit down together with De La Soul and finalize our negotiations — something we’ve wanted to do for months — we have decided to postpone the digital release of their catalog scheduled for tomorrow,” the statement reads. “We know fans are eager to hear these amazing recordings and we are hopeful for a quick resolution.”

Artists such as Nas and Questlove immediately jumped to the defense of the 3Ft. High and Rising trio.

I hate that it has come to this. Seriously. But there is no “if I have to choose a side?” #DeLaSoul means everything to me. @WeAreDeLaSoul gave me and millions of music lovers LIFE. I been hoping and wishing and praying for their back catalogue to be made available on digital media FOREVER—-but not like this @tommyboyrecords. This narrative has been going on since the blues, since jazz, since rock n roll, since disco, since soul——-I’m proud of De La for using their voice. Let’s fix this. For the greater good. Let’s be respectful and fair. 90% to the label & 10% to the artist is not fair. Normal protocol is just to 🤷🏾‍♂️ accept that’s how it is nowadays. We can change that. Change starts now. As much as it pains me to not cop 10 of those issues each and share all their timeless work of genius to a generation that has no clue—-join me in standing w De La Soul in this #TommyBOYCOTT. Do y’all understand I been waiting DECADES to finally listen to their awe inspiring work in the car, on lunch break, in the gym, just chillin? I can’t do that to them. Until you do right by the soul? There is no convo.
