Black Thought Squashes Fugees Verzuz The Roots Rumors

fugees the roots black thoought

The Fugees will not face The Roots in a Verzuz battle.

On Tuesday, Black Thought squashed the rumors that the two Hip-Hop groups would go toe-to-toe in the Verzuz ring.

Black Thought’s comment comes after a flyer went viral claiming The Fugees and The Roots were the next contenders in an upcoming Verzuz battle.

Black Thought is the founder and lead emcee of the Legendary Roots Crew. According to HipHopDx, when the “Quiet Trip” rapper was shown the circulating flyer he gave a thumbs down.

The Fugees have sold over 22 million records worldwide, and are one of the biggest-selling Hip-Hop groups ever with the release of their second album The Score.

The comparison of both iconic groups pre-dates the inception of the Verzuz battle created during quarantine. Many fans have often compared New Jersey group Fugees and Philadelphia’s The Roots.

Ever since The Lox annihilated Dipset in their Verzuz battle, I don’t think fans of Hip-Hop would take well with another loss of one of raps most nostalgic groups.

Although reportedly, Verzuz co-founders Swizz Beatz and Timbaland are working on a Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and Three 6 Mafia battle in the near future.

Share your thoughts on what would be another epic Verzuz battle for Hip-Hop groups?

Today in Hip-Hop History: Erykah Badu Dropped Her Debut LP ‘Baduizm’ 24 Years Ago

tumblr p3z0e3mroc1t1yehoo1 500

On this date in 1997, the debut album from neo-soul queen Erykah Badu entitled Baduizm was released on Universal Records through the Kedar imprint. This LP catapulted the Texan songstress into the Grammy Award-winning music icon that she has become two decades later.

Produced primarily by Madukwu Chinwah, Bob Powers, who is known from ATCQ’s Low End Theory album, as well as various live tracks from the famed Hip Hop band The Roots, this project brought the smoky jazz lounge sound to Hip Hop circles via the language of the 5% Nation. Badu’s naturalista fashion and overall aura not only made lanes for artists like India Irie, Jill Scott, and even Janelle Monae but brought that positive energy that she called “izm” into the living rooms around the globe.

Storytelling tracks such as “Next Lifetime” and “Otherside Of The Game” showed what would be her cult-like following her feminine vulnerabilities, which made her even more audibly attractive to her listeners. The timeless “On & On” will forever be recognized as the hit that made the three times platinum album the cherished musical gem that it still stands as 20 years later.

Thanks to Ms. Badu, Kedar Massenburg, The Roots and everyone else involved in this very intricate piece of Hip Hop history!

Happy 56th Birthday To the Legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff!

Screen Shot 2021 01 22 at 8.22.50 AM

On this date in 1965, Jeffrey Townes, better known to Hip Hop and television fans as “Jazzy Jeff” was born in the City of Brother Love and has become one of the best to ever place their hands on a pair of Technics 1200s.

Originally known as the DJ for rapper/actor The Fresh Prince aka Will Smith, Jeff’s claim to fame was his seemingly innate ability to play the wheels of steel like instruments, popularizing the “transformer” style scratching sound which was mimicked by many DJs who succeeded and preceded him. The two-time Grammy Award winner later became an established producer, sitting behind the boards for artists like Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, The Roots, Floetry, and many more. Just last year, Jazz worked on the Straight Outta Compton film, doing scratch overdubs for the classic flick.

Happy born day and salute to one of the pioneers of the 1s and 2s of Hip Hop culture!

Happy 50th Birthday To The Roots’ Questlove!

tumblr plm1aytenm1t1yehoo1 1280

Happy Born day to Ahmir Khalib Thompson better known as ?uestlove a.k.a Questlove! Born in 1971, he turns a half century today. The OG is originally known as the drummer for the legendary Hip Hop band The Roots, but he has many roles.

On February 17, 2014, he became a part of the in-house band for The Tonight Show, and with The Roots he’s played the same role during the 969-episodes of  Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

Let’s not forget about the many artists he has produced such as Jay Z, Common, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, the late Amy Winehouse, John Legend, and old school R&B legend Al Green. The list goes on with all the production teams he has been a part of, including Hip Hop pioneers like The Soulsonics and The Grand Wizards.

The influence of this multi-faceted musician has reached far beyond most in his lifetime thus far, and he’s nearly only half way thru. Happy Birthday Questlove and many more to come!

[WATCH] Philly Singer Jaguar Wright Calls Out The Roots For Mistreatment Of Founding Member Malik B, Alleges Common Sexually Assaulted Her

external content.duckduckgo 25

With the tragic news of The Roots’ founding member Malik B’s passing echoing through the Hip Hop and music worlds, it’s saddening that more bad news is coming out of the Soulquarian camp, as Philly native Jaguar Wright makes some serious accusations about The Roots’ handling of Malik B’s terminal cancer diagnosis and Wright’s own personal claim that she was sexually assaulted by famed rapper, actor and fellow Soulquarian Common.

According to an almost hour-long IG TV video, Philly native and Soulquarian singer Jaguar Wright say that despite Malik B’s impending health decline, Black Thought and ?uestlove turned their back on their fellow crew member.

“Y’all all online talking about respect the family and this and that, but you didn’t respect your brother enough to come get him when he was doing bad,” Jaguar Wright said. “Y’all wasn’t trying to help him, y’all was telling people to turn their back on him while calling him a drug addict.”

Wright also accuses Erykah Badu and Jill Scott of silently abetting their actions after Malik was the only Roots member who didn’t treat them unfairly at the beginning of their careers.

“Erykah you haven’t posted anything but you’re supposed to be this enlightened mother,” Wright said. “You haven’t said a word about my brother when he was the only one who wasn’t treating your ass like sh*t because you weren’t from Philly, but you quiet now. I’m killing all that fake sh*t.”

In a separate IG Live session, Wright exposes her relationship with famed Soulquarian Common, who she admits to dating, but claims that the rapper/actor sexually assaulted her.

“Gotdamn Common, next thing I know we go to bed he like, ‘Oh, c’mon Jag.’ No, n*gga I’m tired. I was on the stage all night, I’ma lay down,” Wright says of one encounter. “I lay down in the bed with my clothes on. I’m a rape survivor, I know how to buy myself a little time. Just in case a n*gga try to get out of hand. You gotta pull my pants down. By the time you pull my pants down I’m hooking you off in your jaw.”

She continued, “Next thing I know, I wake up the next morning I feel something poking at my face and sh*t. I open my mouth and this n*gga trying to stick his d*ck in my f*cking mouth! Lonnie f*cking Lynn, Common, whatever the f*ck you want to call yourself. That’s why I stopped f*cking with him!”

Founding Member of The Roots, Malik B., Passed Away at 47

Founding Member of The Roots Malik B. Passed Away at 47

One of the founding members of the Hip Hop group, The Roots, passed away according to his cousin Don Champion.

“Mourning my beloved cousin today,” wrote Champion on Twitter. “He was so talented and had a huge heart. I still remember when he and The Roots were starting out. He’d give me and my dad their cassette tapes to listen to. I miss you already, Malik.”

Don didn’t specify his cause of death.

The Roots released a statement saying: “It is with heavy hearts and tearful eyes that we regretfully inform you of the passing of our beloved brother and long time Roots member Malik Abdul Baset. May he be remembered for his devotion to Islam, His loving brotherhood and his innovation as one of the most gifted MCs of all time. We ask that you please respect his family and extended family in our time of mourning such a great loss.”

Malik B. was considered to be an integral part of the group. He appeared on the first four albums, but like every group, they had internal problems and he eventually parted ways. The Philly emcee made guest appearances on later records and also released a solo project called Street Assault in 2005.
