HHW Gaming: PlayStation Reads The Room Postpones PS5 Reveal Event, Stands In Solidarity With Black Protestors

The Video Game Communitiy Stands In Solidarity With #BlackLivesMatter

Source: Sony / PlayStation 5

There are much bigger issues in the world going on right now, and PlayStation has recognized that.

Out of respect for the civil unrest going on throughout the country as Black Americans have taken to the streets to demand justice for George Floyd and others, Sony has decided this week would not be a good time for its PS5 reveal event.

PlayStation announced today on its official Twitter account the decision stating:

“While we understand gamers worldwide are excited to see PS5 games, we do not feel that right now is a time for celebration, and for now, we want to stand back and allow more important voices to be heard.”

No future date has been revealed.

Four hours before that announcement, PlayStation stood in solidarity with the protesters by denouncing systemic racism and violence against the Black community.

“We denounce systemic racism and violence against the Black community. We will continue to work towards a future marked by empathy and inclusion and stand with our Black creators, players, employees, families, and friends. #BlackLivesMatter”

PlayStation wasn’t alone, EA Sports canceled an upcoming Madden 21 reveal event stating in a tweet:

“We stand with our African American/Black community of friends, players, colleagues, and partners. Our immediate attention is on actions we can take to drive change against the unjust treatment and systemic bias that is plaguing the nation and our world.”

“We’ll find another time to talk football with you. Because this is bigger than a game, bigger than sports, and needs all of us to stand together and commit to change.”

EA’s announcement was met with some criticism due to the fact the game did censor out Colin Kaepernick’s from a Big Sean verse in a YG song featured in Madden NFL 19.

The Last of Us Part II developers, Naughty Dog, also issued a statement standing in solidarity against racism and injustice and while stating #BlackLivesMatter.

It’s refreshing to know that the video game community understands that #BlackLivesMatter.

Gaming Services Take Steps To Handle Record Service Boom Due To Coronavirus Shutdown

Sony & Microsoft Are Monitoring Services During Record Usage

Source: Chesnot / Getty

It’s no secret, due to be people being stuck in the crib, video games are helping them pass the time. But with so many people online now, that means a massive strain on the service, causing providers to take some steps to keep it running.

Microsoft and Sony are already promising players they are monitoring the situation closely to make sure service to Xbox Live and PlayStation Plus holds up while they both see record engagement.

In a blog post, Sony CEO, Jim Ryan said PlayStation will “address internet stability concerns,” but did point out that gamers in Europe “may experience somewhat slower or delayed game downloads but will still enjoy robust gameplay.” In a statement to Engadget, Xbox product services corporate vice president Dave McCarthy revealed that the company is “actively monitoring usage and making temporary adjustments as needed to ensure the smoothest possible experience for our gamers.”

Other companies like T-Mobile and Verizon have already been granted “temporary freedoms” to deal with the service surge. Streaming services like Netflix, Youtube, and Disney+ have scaled back its service to handle heavy usage.

To put into perspective just how many people are now playing video games online, two Spanish footballers decided to pick up the sticks and play their canceled La Liga match in EA’s FIFA 20. Their online game had 60,000 people watch on Twitch, basically a stadium-sized virtual audience.

Fox just announced its inaugural NASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series race on March 22nd drew a staggering 903,000 viewers on FS1, making it the highest-rated esports TV program to date. Fox has committed to picking up the remainder of the season and will start with a race at the simulated Texas Motor Speedway on March 29th at 1PM Eastern. You will be able to watch the races on FS1,  Fox broadcast network, and Fox Sports app.

Cheddar Esports, Erin Ashley Simon spoke Nascar’s Managing Director of Gaming, Scott Warfield, about the iRacing’s big boom.

We will be interested to see how things hold up as the coronavirus shutdown lasts for months. Until then, if you need suggestions for games to play, you can check out our list of ridiculously long games to help you pass the time.

Video Game Twitter Feels Hoodwinked & Bamboozled After Watching PS5 Livestream Event

In this photo illustration a PlayStation 5 logo app seen...

Source: SOPA Images / Getty

Yesterday Sony got us all hyped when it announced it would be holding a livestream event that would be a deep dive into PS5’s system architecture. After an hour presentation, gamers feel like they have been hoodwinked by the company.

So what did we learn about the PS5 today? Not much if you go by the tone of gamers on Twitter. The presentation conducted by System lead architect Mark Cerny basically broke down:

  • The technical specifications of PlayStation 5 and its innovative ‘boost’ approach to core clocks;
  • The features of the PlayStation 5 GPU;
  • How the SSD helps deliver the next-generation dream;
  • How Sony tackles expandable storage;
  • Unprecedented 3D audio fidelity via the Tempest 3D Audio Engine.

We’re not going to repeat what already was announced you can head here for that information. While some signification information about the new console was revealed, gamers walked away from today’s livestream extremely disappointed. Mainly because they were hoping to actually see what the PS5 looks like. Highly due to the fact, Microsoft has already revealed the Xbox Series X to the world.

Its apparent Sony is taking its sweet time and will reveal the PS5 when the company is good and ready too. But they can’t be mad at gamers who are growing impatient with them, especially after today’s insanely weird presentation that will probably go down in video game lore due to many head-scratching decisions. For example, we know everyone is practicing social distancing, but why did they have Cenry taking in front of fake shadow attendees?

The PS5 is still on track for Holiday 2020 release despite the coronavirus pandemic, according to GamesRadar. When that day happens, we’re gonna look back at this rollout because it’s looking really suspect right now. At this point, the PS5 better blow us away instantly to make us forget about this.

You can peep all of the reactions to the PS5 livestream below.

PlayStation Decides To Bow Out of PAX East Due To Coronavirus Concerns

PlayStation Pulls Bows Out of PAX East Due To Coronavirus Concers

Source: Emanuele Cremaschi / Getty

The Coronavirus has the tech world shook at the moment. Sony announced that due to concerns about the illness, it will no longer be showing at this year’s PAX East convention in Boston.

Sony broke the sad news to gamers via its blog today (Feb.19), revealing that those attending will not get to experience what the company has in store for the new year.

Via PlayStation:

Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment made the decision to cancel its participation at PAX East in Boston this year due to increasing concerns related to COVID-19 (also known as “novel coronavirus”). We felt this was the safest option as the situation is changing daily. We are disappointed to cancel our participation in this event, but the health and safety of our global workforce is our highest concern.

With PlayStation’s absence now confirmed those looking forward to getting hands-on with Sony’s highly anticipated titles like Final Fantasy VII: Remake and The Last of Us: Part II will have to wait now. Other games Sony planned on showing included Dreams, Marvel’s Iron Man VR, Nioh 2, Doom Eternal, and Spelunky 2.

As for now, PAX East is still slated to begin on February 27, despite one of the biggest names pulling out of the convention. Don’t be surprised if other names follow Sony’s lead and also decide not to participate as well. The Coronavirus has also affected companies like Apple, who just announced on Monday (Feb.17) that it does not expect to meet its expected revenue guidance for its fiscal second quarter. There are also rumblings that Apple’s budget iPhone 9 model could be delayed as well even though the company confirmed the phone is still slated for a March release.

The eSports world also has been affected as well, with the Overwatch League announcing the cancelation of upcoming matches in China that were slated to take place in February and March.

Footwear has also taken a hit due to the Coronavirus, adidas just recently announced that sales collapsed in China. The Coronavirus is the real deal, we fully expect more companies to feel the strain.

Sony PlayStation Will Now Support Cross-Play For Any Game That Uses It: Report

Cross-Play Is Out of Beta Mode on PlayStation 4

Source: CHARLY TRIBALLEAU / Getty

Historically, Sony wasn’t initially on board with the idea of cross-play much to the dismay of gamers. When Microsoft and Nintendo came together to allow Fornite players to come together, everyone started looking at PlayStation wondering when they will join in. It seems like that time is now.

PlayStation was reluctantly forced into cross-play after gamers made a big stink about not initially being allowed to play with Switch and Xbox One owners. Since then the idea of cross-play was, for the most part, in beta mode with its most significant test being during Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s recent beta. It would seem the folks at PlayStation were pleased with the results and have officially decided to play nice with Switch and Xbox One owners.

Sony hasn’t confirmed the news yet, but in a post from Wired, they elude that Modern Warfare is Sony’s first official foray into the world of cross-play. When it officially launches later this month, the re-imagined version of the iconic first-person shooter will take the feature out its beta mode. So fans, of games like Rocket League and as mentioned above Fortnite who loathed the idea of having to ditch their PS4 console’s to play with friends will no longer have to.

Tha’s not the only big news revolving around PlayStation. Sony also announced a significate price cut to it’s PlayStation Now subscription service. The monthly service dropped from $20 to $10 with the annual falling from $100 to $60. The lineup was also bolstered with the addition fo PlayStation exclusives God of WarUncharted 4: A Thief’s EndInfamous: Second Son, plus Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V.

It would seem like Sony is looking to close out the year strong with the PlayStation 4 and at the same time grown its PlayStation Now service which has 700,000 subscribers at this moment. We are here for all

PlayStation Vita Officially Discontinued, End of Handheld Gaming for Sony?

Sony Is Officially Discontinuing The PlayStation Vita

Source: PSM3 Magazine / Getty

It’s official, Sony has pulled the plug on the PlayStation Vita bowing out of the handheld gaming market for now.
In a move the frankly everyone saw coming, the tech giant has discontinued its remaining two PS Vita models. This move is the final step in a long gradual phase-out of the handheld console that began with the discontinuation of physical games, no more first-party titles in 2015 and the stoppage of free PS Plus titles.

Despite its demise, the PS Vita first launched back in 2011 in Japan at the height of the mobile phone and tablet gaming boom. The follow-up to the successful PSP (PlayStation Portable) failed to compete with the likes of those devices and Nintendo who pretty much owns the portable gaming world thanks to the Gameboy. Design complaints like its reliance on expensive memory cards also doomed the mini-powerful console.

Sony doesn’t look like its any rush to drop another handheld console either, and you could chop that up to ridiculous success of the Nintendo Switch and the fact PlayStation 4 is still performing well so the company could rely on those sales. With cloud-based gaming slowly becoming the wave, Sony could be looking to put all of its focus into PlayStation Now and other services that don’t have to be confined primarily to one single device.

We will have to wait and see when Sony decides to do when the company shows us its hand later this year.

PlayStation Classic Console Gets A Price Cut, On Sale For $39.99 At Walmart

PlayStation Classic Console Gets A Price Cut

Source: Sony / PlayStation

If you wanted a PlayStation Classic console but wasn’t feeling the original price now is your chance to scoop one up for $39.99.

For a limited time, you can head to Walmart and pick up Sony’s retro console for $39.99 that’s $60 cheaper than its original price at launch. The steep price cut more than likely stems from the consoles’ weak sales due to the lackluster library games it had pre-loaded on it like Metal Gear SolidTekken 3Twisted Metal, and Final Fantasy VII. But had gamers asking where are hits like Resident Evil 2 or Legend of Dragoon just to name a few.

Also, poor critic reviews didn’t help Sony achieve the success Nintendo saw with its retro consoles the NES Classic and Super Nintendo Classic. While this might look like a significant L for Sony, they definitely can learn from this. With two other consoles the PS2 and PS3 possibly due for the retro treatment they could see more success if they pick the right games to bundle with them.

Or they might just bow out of selling retro consoles altogether and focus on getting the games on their current money maker the PS4 and the rumored PS5 console. With cloud-based gaming and backward compatibility becoming the wave this is definitely the best route Sony could take to open up their entire classic library of games to video game playing world.

Playing With Fire: Soulja Boy’s Latest “Sold Out” Sketchy Console Looks Awfully Familar

Soulja Boy Selling Fake PS Vita Consoles

Source: Santiago Felipe / Getty

Soulja Boy is currently trying to convince his “haters” he is not a crackhead but, he might have Sony breathing down his neck as well thanks to his latest sketchy console.

Tyga will be the least of his worries if he keeps this up.

Clearly, DeAndre Cortez Way hasn’t learned at all from having to “boss up” the last time after a publisher presumably slapped him with a cease and desist forcing him to stop selling those janky consoles. If you head to his SouljaWatch website, there is a console being sold that looks eerily similar to PlayStation’s portable unit the PS Vita.

The bootleg console which is mysteriously “sold out” now features the build of a Vita with the specs of PlayStation Portable aka PSP. The unit’s original price was $200 but is allegedly on “sale” for $100. So Sony could have already have reached out and put him on notice already.

Besides the consoles, the website also sells knockoff versions of AirPods called Soulja Pods for $19.76, a sketchy Apple Watch named the Soula Watch for $11.66, Bluetooth wireless headphones for $35.36 and a tablet for $164.64. Now we here at Hip-Hop Wired are not hating on the Black man at all, but we do want y’all to seriously do your research before spending money on these electronics.

You can currently watch Soula Boy try to salvage his confirmed dead relationship with Nia Riley on Marriage Boot Camp: Hip Hop Edition.

Wait What?: PlayStation Will Not Be Showing Anything At E3 2019

US-ENTERTAINMENT-GAMES-IT-E3-SONY

Source: FREDERIC J. BROWN / Getty

It officially has been five years since Sony blessed us with the PlayStation 4 console. On top of celebrating the PS4, the company dropped the bombshell that it would not have a presence at E3 2019.

Wait a minute here.

A Sony rep confirmed the surprising news to Polygon explaining that the company is looking for ways to “innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers.”

Per Polygon:

“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community “PlayStation fans mean the world to us, and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you.”

Sony and PlayStation’s absence will be the first time in the convention’s 24-year history. Sony wowed gamers back in May 1995 at the first ever E3 Conference when it announced the U.S. launch date and price for the first PlayStation console. Despite Sony’s surprising absence, Microsoft, Nintendo as well as publishers like Activision, Ubisoft, Take-Two and more are already committed to E3 2019.

As you can imagine the speculation as to why Sony decided not to attend has gamers believing that the company will be holding its own conference and will possibly be dropping a major bomb in the form of the PS5.

We also believe that as well, but E3 will be a little dry without PlayStation. For the past couple of years, they have been bringing the excitement each year, so Sony’s absence is a gut punch for those looking forward to E3 2019. This is the second event PlayStation has canceled. The annual PlayStation Experience event the company holds at the beginning of December has been put on ice as well.

This story is still developing.
