Chick Corea, Legendary Jazz Pianist, Dead At 79

Chick Corea Live

Source: Ed Perlstein / Getty

Chick Corea, a versatile Jazz pianist whose career spans several decades, has died according to reports. The legendary musician was battling a rare form of cancer, according to details provided by his family.

Armando Anthony Corea was born on June 12, 1941, in Chelsea, Mass., was influenced by his father, a Jazz trumpeter of South Italian descent. Corea’s father played in clubs around Boston, which a young Chick witnessed and developed an interest in the musical genre. He began playing live shows while still in high school ahead of a stint in New York City to study music at both Columbia University and the Juilliard School, quitting both early.

Corea began his professional career in the 1960s with Willie Bobo, Blue Mitchell, Herbie Mann, Stan Getz, and Mongo Santamaria, all known names in the Jazz world. As a bandleader, Corea recorded his debut Tones for Joan’s Bones in 1966 and it was released two years later.

As a session player for Miles Davis, Corea played the electronic piano, using a device called the ring modulator. This innovation gave way to the heavy electronic experimentation heard in the burgeoning Jazz Fusion scene in the early 1970s. It was this style of music that Corea earned many of his chief accolades and his playing left an indelible mark on the genre as a whole.

Corea eventually made his return to a more traditional jazz sound by way of the acoustic piano, replaying standards of the legends before him. Corea’s final studio album as a bandleader, Plays, was released last year.

Over the course of his career, Corea won 23 Grammy Awards and was nominated over 60 times. He released 81 studio albums, several live albums, and dozens of collaborations with other Jazz players.

Across Twitter, Corea’s name is trending with fans giving their respects to the pianist.

Earl G. Graves, Sr., the founder of Black Enterprise magazine, has passed away at the age of 85 on Monday (April 6). Graves used his media platform to empowering emerging Black business owners and sharing pathways of wealth via entrepreneurship.

Black Enterprise shared in an article regarding the news of Graves’ passing, with Graves’ son Earl “Butch” Graves, Jr. sharing that his father’s long bout with Alzheimer’s Disease was what took his life.

Graves was born January 9, 1935, in Brooklyn, N.Y. and raised in the borough’s Bedford-Stuyvesant section. Graves’ sharp business acumen began early on when he was a boy in Brooklyn, and he carried that sensibility with him as a student at Morgan State University. Graduating from the Baltimore, Md. school in 1958, Graves went on to serve two years as an officer in the U.S. Army. In 1965, Graves was named as Sen. Robert F. Kennedy’s administrative assistant. After Kennedy’s assassination in 1968, Graves was moved to begin a publication for Black people to learn more about entrepreneurship.

The first issue of Black Enterprise hit stands in August 1970 and with the help of his wife, Barbara, Graves transformed what he called his “modest magazine” into one of the top magazines of its era aimed at Black Americans. Using Black Enterprise to highlight brilliant Black business leaders such as Bob Johnson, Kenneth Chenault, Reginald F. Lewis, Oprah Winfrey and more, the magazine served as an inspiration for future entrepreneurs.

Black Enterprise exists today and has changed with the times, moving from strictly print to covering its favored subjects across all forms of media, most specifically the digital space. Adding to Graves’ success, he was also the CEO of Pepsi-Cola in Washington, D.C., a Black-owned distribution site for the beverage company.

Graves is survived by his three sons Earl Jr., Johnny, and Michael, along with eight grandchildren. Mrs. Graves passed away in 2012.

We’ve amassed reactions from Twitter to the news of Graves’ passing. May he rest powerfully in peace.

Rocky “Soulman” Johnson, Father Of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Has Died

Unite In The Fight... To Knockout Bullying

Source: Rob Kim / Getty

The world of professional wrestling has lost one of its pioneers in Rocky “Soulman” Johnson, who made history as one-half of the first Black tag-team champions in the WWE. The father of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson passed on Wednesday (Jan. 15).

The WWE shared news of Johnson’s passing, sharing in a post what details they had with the public.

From WWE:

Johnson’s sports-entertainment career began in the mid-1960s when he made a memorable impression in the National Wrestling Alliance. However, Johnson found his highest levels of success when he began his WWE tenure in 1983.

The physically imposing and wildly charismatic Johnson had several memorable rivalries with the likes of Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, Don Muraco and Adrian Adonis. He found his greatest success when he teamed up with Tony Atlas as The Soul Patrol. The two men became the first African-American World Tag Team Champions in WWE history when they defeated The Wild Samoans on Dec. 10, 1983.

Johnson, born Wayde Douglas Bowles and a Canadian national, left the ring for good in 1991 and was helpful in training his son The Rock ahead of his ascent to the top of the pro wrestling ranks, honoring his father with his stage name. And due to videos shared by WWE, Johnson was just as charismatic on the microphone as he was selling the high-flying and powerful moves inside the ring.

The elder Johnson was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008 due to his influence on the sport-entertainment genre. Thus far, The Rock has yet to make a public statement regarding the loss of his father.

Rocky Johnson was 75.

Our condolences to the family of Rocky “Soulman” Johnson. May he rest powerfully in peace.

There’s a reason why when we went to Disneyland, little girls kept asking if you were a princess. There was a light about you, and anyone that was lucky enough to meet you, to be in your presence, and even luckier to be loved by you, saw it, felt it & was drawn to you. You lived unapologetically, you loved so all encompassing, you hyped me up, sent me memes when you knew I needed a laugh, and you did that for everyone you loved. The last time I spoke to you we were on FaceTime and I told you about my recent changes in my life, you showered me with love as you always did, and then scolded me when I told you that I hadn’t eaten that day and wasn’t sleeping enough, and I laughed and told you “God! You’re always being my mom!!!” because that was you, you were a nurturer. You loved hard, your sense of humor was untouchable, your passion was electric, and the work you did on this earth, the lives you touched, the visibility you brought to this world, your beautiful words of strength and standing firm for what you believe… that will be your legacy. Rest now @mamacax , we will keep fighting for you 🖤💔 (& yea, I’m gonna bloom & make you proud 🌷)

I am honoured to have known you @mamacax Thank you for being you, in a world often filled with darkness you brought light and hope to so many. To say you inspired the world is an understatement – you changed the world and your legacy is everlasting. So are the memories I will treasure forever. As much as it hurts knowing you’ve passed on, my heart is filled with gratitude that the world experienced your grace, wit, courage, strength, fearless advocacy and love for others. I will continue to smile everyday thinking of you and do my best to continue living and fighting for what you believe in. Sending my prayers and love to your family I can’t thank them enough for bringing you into this world. Until we meet again, love you sister❤🕊

Source: @louie_rankin / Instagram

The dancehall and acting community lost a beloved figure in Louie Rankin. Rankin, who is best known for roles in the films Shottas and Belly, has reportedly succumbed to injuries he suffered in Ontario, Canada with early accounts stating he was in a car accident.

Rankin played Teddy Bruckshot in Shottas and Ox in Belly, roles that highlighted Rankin’s menacing looks and gravelly patois. Away from acting, Rankin was also a deejay (rapper in dancehall reggae) who scored a massive hit in the 1990s, “Typewriter,” and referred to himself as the “Orginal Don Dada.”

According to what has been posted previously online, Rankin was born St. Thomas, Jamaica, and raised between Rockfort, Warika Hill and East Kingston. He was still active in music and film in the past years according to his Instagram page, and Rankin looked to be well connected in his adopted home of Toronto as evidenced by the outpouring of love via his public Facebook page.

It appears that Rankin was involved in a crash in Melancthon Township, 68 miles west of Toronto, on Highway 89 according to an IHeartRadio report, but details are scant beyond that. His official Twitter page also shared news of the unfortunate passing.

On Twitter, fans are gathered in mourning and tribute to the actor and musician. We’ve captured some of those responses below.
