HHW Gaming Review: ‘Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath” Gives NetherRealm’s Fighter Some New Energy

'Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath' Review

Source: Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath / WB Games

It’s been more than a year since Mortal Kombat 11 was first released, and to give arguably the best fighting game of 2019 some new legs going into 2020 Aftermath has arrived.

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath revigorates the fighting game by adding new stages, significant balance changes, Friendships for other characters, stage fatalities, and more.

The best part about all of that, you get to enjoy all of those enhancements for free99.

BUT if you want to play the three-hour expansion to MK11’s single-player story mode or issue fades with Sheeva, Fujin, and of course, RoboCop it’s going to cost you… $40 to be exact.

But is it worth it?

The campaign picks right up where it ended in Mortal Kombat 11 and takes us a time-heist to save to time itself but with another twist. While the story is very predictable, it is very enjoyable as it brings back all of the all the game characters minus the guests. Shang Tsung, who is played by actor Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa who not only steals souls in the game but also every damn scene he is in. Outside of that, it’s just enjoyable filler, but it’s quite interesting that Sonya Blade doesn’t have one single line outside of a grunt. I’m just gonna assume Ronda Rousey was too busy to record additional voiceover work.

Again, outside of some eyebrow-raising moments, helping the unlikely team of Shang Tsung, Nightwolf and Fujin go back in time and secure Kronika’s crown to restore time does manage to keep your attention for 3-hours.

The Aftermath expansion though, if we are keeping it a buck, is an expensive character pack. We all just wanted to get hands-on with the new characters Sheeva, Fujin, and RoboCop, and for the most part, they each offer unique playstyles for gamers to experience.

Fujin, the God of Wind and brother of Raiden, makes his return to the Mortal Kombat arena. He hasn’t been a playable character since Mortal Kombat: Armageddon 14 years ago.

Once selected, you will find that he is quick and the most unique character out the three. His ability to literally run on-air, fast attacks, and unusual special moves make Fujin a fun character to master.

Now sadly, the same can’t be said about RoboCop is the standout character out of the three. Once selected, outside of all of the neat touches like Peter Weller’s voice and likeness and the callbacks to the classic film, he’s a pretty dull character. His attacks don’t really impress, but if you like characters who are “zoners,” then RoboCop is your man. But then again, this is Mortal Kombat, why would you want to kill your enemies from a distance?

I was also pleasantly surprised with Sheeva, who is an absolute bruiser but is but can also cover ground quickly thanks to her trusty teleport stomp. Sheeva was last playable in Mortal Kombat 9 in 2011, and now she is back with a vengeance. Immediately you will notice that her combos are bone-crushing and when perfectly time with her grabs absolutely devastating. I can definitely see Sheeva being a new favorite among players going forward.

Final Verdict

Honestly, while the story expansion is substantial and three new fighters, even with RoboCop, who is meh, they are a  welcomed addition to the game. But at the price of $40, NetherRealm could have honestly just found a way to separate the two because the price tag is hefty for Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath. Not sure if NetherRealm thought they were offering fans a brand new game with Aftermath like, for example, Destiny 2’s massive Forsaken expansion. It sure doesn’t feel that way once you experienced everything.

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath is a solid expansion for the hardcore fans of the franchise, I understand if some folks might wince at the $40 price tag, which makes it a hard recommendation for everyone.

HHW Gaming: RoboCop & The Terminator Practice Their Fatalities On Each Other In New Trailers

RoboCop & Terminator Issue Cybernetic Fades In 2 Mortal Kombat 11 Trailers

Source: NetherRealm Studios / WB Games

The dream match nerds have always imagined between Hollywood’s most famous cyborgs is a reality once again in Mortal Kombat 11.

Today (May.20), WB Games and NetherRealm Studios dropped two new trailers featuring the Kombat Pack 1’s T-800 Terminator and Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath’s new kombatant RoboCop facing off against each other. In each video, both characters showcase what a match between the two cyborgs will look like by showcasing each character’s combos, x-ray attacks, special moves, and, of course, fatalities.

Now, this wasn’t the first time the two titular characters have faced off against each other. They battled each other in the 1992 Dark Horse comic book crossover event RoboCop vs. Terminator written by Frank Miller. It was eventually turned into a video game and released on SNES, Sega Genesis, Game Gear, and Gameboy in 1994. The Genesis version of the game was beloved among fans and was awarded the Bloodiest Game of 1993 by Electronic Gaming Monthly.

Fast forward to 2020, thanks to Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath we will now get to witness the one on one battle we wished we could see on the big screen. Flanked by his pet ED-209, RoboCop states before his fight, “haven’t we done this before?” a clear shoutout to RoboCop vs. Terminator comic and game. The Terminator, which sadly doesn’t use Arnold Schwarzenegger’s voice, responding, “I have no record of a previous encounter.” Robo, who is voiced by actor Peter Weller closes out the dialogue “we have met, I am sure of it.”

After its all said and done its time for Kombat. Again both characters get their time to shine in both trailers. You can peep them both and get ready for Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath on May 26.

Spawn Rises From The Depths of Hell To Join The ‘Mortal Kombat 11’ Roster

Mortal Kombat 11 Spawn

Source: WB Games / NetherRealm Studios

Here he is Mortal Kombat fans, the one character everyone has been waiting for since he was first announced, Todd McFarlane”s comic book creation Spawn. NetherRealm Studios finally dropped the gameplay trailer featuring everyone’s favorite antihero.

NetherRealm and WB Games unveiled the final character from Mortal Kombat 11’s first Kombat Pack during today’s (Mar.8) Final Kombat 2020 event at the Mortal Kombat 11 Pro Kompetition esports series. Attendees got the opportunity to see the hellspawn formerly known as Al Simmons before the rest of the world finally did.

For those who need a bit of backstory, Simmons was one of the U.S. government’s greatest soldiers. Unfortunately, he was betrayed by his own men and mercilessly killed, and because of his life as an assassin, his spirit went to hell. There he made a deal with the devil, who is named Malebolgia, and agrees to join his army as a Hellspawn to see his wife again. BUT, like any deal you make with the Satan, it’s going to be twisted. Simmons returns back to Earth, but his body is badly burned, and his memory is all jacked up. To make things even worse when he finally remembers the deal he made, he finds his wife and is saddened to learn that his she has moved on with his best friend Terry, and the couple has a daughter together.

Dirty macking on another level.

Now he is the realm of Mortal Kombat to “fight for supremacy” against all Kombatants, and he looks like he was well worth the wait. In the trailer, we get to see Spawn in action using his Necroplasm powers as well as his signature battle-ax, chains, machine guns, and, of course, his fan-favorite cape to dish out some severe punishment to his foes. The best part about Spawn is the fact he is voiced by actor Keith David who lent his voice to the character in the Emmy award-winning HBO animated series. If you have HBO GO, you should do yourself a favor and watch it.

Too bad they couldn’t get Arnold Schwarzenegger to voice The Terminator T-800 in the game, we’re gonna let that slide.

As to when you can finally play with Spawn, if you already own the Kombat Pack, you get early access starting March 17. Everyone else will be given access to the character on March 24.

Spawn’s trailer wasn’t the only announcement, there will be three fresh skins Mortal Kombat fans can look forward too with the Matinee Skin Pack. Jacqui Briggs gets two costumes, a Spawn-inspired “Hellspawn” and “Space Marine” look. Kotal Kahn also receives a new fit with the “Osh Tekk Vandal,” and Erron Black looks sort of like Indiana Jones with his “Swashbuckler” costume.

‘Mortal Kombat 11′ Players Are Not Too Thrilled With DJ Dimitri Vegas’ Struggle Voice Over Work

DJ Dimitri Vegas' Voice Over Work In 'Mortal Kombat 11' Is Awful

Source: WB Games / NetherRealm Studios

Back in July, it was announced that world-renowned DJ, Dimitri Vegas was being added to Mortal Kombat 11 with his own free Sub-Zero skin August 22. It was also announced he would be lending his voice to the game and today gamers are not too pleased with his struggle voice work.

Fans were initially excited to learn about the promotion including Vegas. The DJ is no stranger to the franchise either, he remixed the original Mortal Kombat theme for the games launch trailer. He also crafted an original track used later used in MK 11’s story reveal trailer, so this union between the two entities made perfect sense. Or so we thought. Video footage of the Vegas’ Sub-Zero skin in action being shared on the web and while he looks good in action, it’s his voice-over work that has fans scratching their heads.

It would seem Vegas is gonna need to brush up on his acting skills because it is a real struggle. Here is one video that painfully showcases that.

Yikes, even Beyonce wasn’t that bad in the Lion King, this just proves that lending your voice to video games isn’t for amateurs either. DJ Dimitri Vegas is set to take on actor Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson who played The Moutain in Game of Thrones at in MK 11 matchup at Gamescom 2019 in Cologne, Germany billed as “The Music vs. The Muscle.” The first match between the two kicks off Aug. 22 at 10:30 AM EST with them battling it out in Mortal Kombat 11 on Google Stadia. The action will pick back up at Aug. 22 at 11.30 AM EST as they compete again this time on Xbox One, the matchup can be viewed on Mixr and NetherRealm’s Twitch channel.

Till then you can hit the gallery below to see all the reactions to DJ Vegas’ struggle acting.

'Mortal Kombat 11' Dropping Free DJ Dimitris Vegas Sub-Zero Skin

Source: WB Games / NetherRealm Studios

Players are currently issuing plenty of fades in Mortal Kombat 11 since its April 23 release and are eagerly awaiting the first batch of DLC characters. Today (July 22) NetherRealm announced it will be dropping a Sub-Zero skin inspired by international DJ Dimitri Vegas.

The free skin will be available to Mortal Kombat 11 owners on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch beginning August 22. Not only will Vegas’s likeness be used, but he will be lending his voice to the fighting game as well. This will mark the second time the DJ has worked with Mortal Kombat. He remixed the iconic Mortal Kombat theme from the 1995 film that was showcased in the launch trailer.
